After the meeting adjourned, Ning Zhiheng glanced at his watch; it was already noon. He quickly left the Military Intelligence Investigation Department and drove directly to his teacher He Feng's house. He needed to report such an important matter to his teacher so that he could make thorough preparations.
He Feng's family was somewhat surprised to see Ning Zhiheng arrive so suddenly. Ning Zhiheng would always call ahead to let them know he was coming to their home for a meal.
Teacher He Feng was somewhat surprised to see Ning Zhiheng dressed in a military uniform. Ning Zhiheng usually wore a regular Zhongshan suit when he came to eat, and had never been so formal before.
He Feng gestured to his wife, Li Lan, to prepare a few more dishes, while he waved for Ning Zhiheng to follow him to the study.
He Feng sat down in the chair and looked at Ning Zhiheng, asking, "Is something the matter?"
Ning Zhiheng nodded and replied in a low voice, "I have just received orders to go to the Shanghai battlefield to join the special operations team and fight directly against the Japanese army."
"What?" He Feng was shocked. He hadn't expected that Ning Zhiheng would also be going to the Shanghai battlefield.
These instructors from the Whampoa Military Academy were very well-informed, and of course they knew how high the casualties of the Nationalist soldiers on the Shanghai front were.
However, Ning Zhiheng was not a regular army commander; he was an intelligence officer who handled intelligence and assassinations. He never expected to be sent to the front lines.
It's easy to imagine how dangerous it would be for Ning Zhiheng to go.
"Very well! I didn't want you to go to the battlefield as cannon fodder before because that was a civil war, where people fight each other, and dying on the battlefield would be meaningless. But this is a national war! Fighting the Japanese, protecting our homeland, is the duty of every Chinese son and daughter!" After a long silence, He Feng slowly said. Having spent his life in the military, he was naturally not afraid of battlefield combat. "If I weren't a teacher now, I would also want to go to the front lines to fight and serve my country!"
Ning Zhiheng knew that his teacher He Feng was speaking from the heart. He had spent the first half of his life in military service, but in the end he was assigned to the Whampoa Military Academy as an instructor. After being idle for many years, he naturally felt depressed and always thought about being able to lead troops again, fight on the battlefield, and realize his ambitions.
Ning Zhiheng nodded slightly and said with a smile, "I can understand your feelings, teacher. Perhaps one day you will be able to get what you want."
Ning Zhiheng continued, "I will be setting off soon, and I came here specifically to say goodbye to my teacher."
He Feng nodded. Having served as an instructor at the Whampoa Military Academy for many years, he had not taken on many disciples. Among them, Ning Zhiheng was the one who suited his mind the most. He had always treated him like a son or nephew, and Ning Zhiheng had never hidden anything from him and treated him like a father. But suddenly, knowing that he was really going to Shanghai, that bloody battlefield, the worry in his heart still made him unable to put it down.
Ning Zhiheng said again, "I have one more request!"
"you say!"
Ning Zhiheng took a deep breath and said slowly, "My future in Shanghai is uncertain. I have no other worries except for my parents, siblings and I. They are well-off and have no worries about making a living in Chongqing. However, in this chaotic world, they may be coveted by others. If anything happens to me, I hope you will take care of me!"
Hearing this, He Feng felt a pang of sadness. It was clear that Ning Zhiheng was making arrangements for his own future, and was prepared to sacrifice himself.
He stood up and came to Ning Zhiheng, patted him heavily on the shoulder, and nodded solemnly, saying, "You can rest assured about that. With my strength, protecting your family is not difficult. Don't worry too much. Just be careful on the battlefield and strive to return safely!"
The teacher and student chatted for a long time before leaving the study to have lunch with their families. During the meal, Ning Zhiheng was as composed and relaxed as ever, showing no signs of anything unusual.
However, Li Lan, the teacher's wife, keenly sensed a special atmosphere. Only after Ning Zhiheng took his leave did she come to He Feng's side and ask in a low voice, "Is Zhiheng going to the front line?"
He Feng's eyebrows twitched, and he looked at his wife, saying, "You figured it out?"
Li Lan sighed softly: "He's just like you. Every time he goes to the battlefield, he pretends that nothing's wrong, but I can feel the reluctance he feels when he leaves."
Ning Zhiheng spent the afternoon handing over his work to Zhao Jiang and giving him some instructions. After get off work, he returned home with the Zuo siblings.
After everyone sat down in the room, Zuo Rou couldn't wait to ask, "Young Master, since you're all going to Shanghai this time, I want to go with you too. I don't want to be separated from you!"
Today, when Zuo Rou heard that Ning Zhiheng and her brothers were all going to the front lines in Shanghai, she was immediately devastated. These three people were the most important family members in her world, the pillars that sustained her life, and naturally she was unwilling to be separated from them.
But how could Ning Zhiheng and the Zuo brothers be willing to let Zuo Rou, a woman, go to the battlefield?
Zuo Gang and Zuo Qiang tried to persuade her, but no matter what they said, Zuo Rou stubbornly insisted on going with them.
Finally, Ning Zhiheng grew impatient and frowned, saying, "You are a soldier now, so you naturally know the principle that military orders are as heavy as mountains. How can we treat this as a joke! Besides, with hundreds of thousands of troops around, going to Shanghai is not as dangerous as you imagine. After the great battle, we will naturally be reunited!"
Seeing Ning Zhiheng's displeasure, Zuo Rou dared not say anything more. Finally, she bit her lip and said, "Today our telecommunications team leader said that our telecommunications equipment needs to be transferred immediately to Wuhan for reinstallation. We need to evacuate a group of personnel from Nanjing ahead of schedule. Are we going to lose our hold on Nanjing? This is Nanjing, after all."
Ning Zhiheng felt relieved upon hearing Zuo Rou's words. It seemed that the Chief of Staff was aware that the National Army was beyond saving and had already begun arranging for the evacuation.
