“That’s right. Today we should open the door wide for them and let them do whatever they want. Let’s see what tricks they have up their sleeves!” Ning Zhiheng nodded and said.
Operations staff officer Sun Yushu couldn't resist his craving for alcohol today. Unfortunately, the military meeting was going on a bit late, so after finishing the meeting, he left the command post and headed to a nearby tavern. This was where he usually treated himself, mainly because the alcohol there was quite good and suited his taste perfectly.
"Hey! Sir, it's getting late. Please come in!" The tavern owner quickly led Sun Yushu to a private seat.
Sun Yushu exchanged a few simple pleasantries, then ordered some food and drinks, and began to enjoy them immensely.
Before long, two young men came in, ordered wine and food, and started eating and drinking not far from him.
Although Sun Yushu enjoyed drinking, he was very moderate. After drinking one pot of old wine, he stopped and called over the tavern owner with a smile, saying, "Your old wine here really has some flavor, it's really good. Please fill me up with some so I can take it back."
The tavern owner readily agreed and turned to fetch a large jug of wine to take to Sun Yushu. Sun Yushu took out some money from his pocket, and the two young men who had been sitting at the next table immediately turned their attention to them, carefully watching their every move.
After Sun Yushu paid and left, one of the young men wanted to follow him out, but was stopped by the other young man with a look. The two of them continued to eat and drink as if nothing had happened.
It wasn't until the tavern owner came over to clear the table where Sun Yushu had just eaten that the two of them secretly observed the owner's every move. They indeed didn't find anything unusual about him, and there was nothing between his hands.
When the boss finished clearing the dishes and took them into the kitchen, a young man immediately went to the seat where Sun Yushu had just been sitting. He quickly searched every nook and cranny under the table and chair, but found nothing amiss. They then exchanged a glance and shook their heads slightly.
When Sun Yushu returned to the command post, it was already 9 p.m. He went straight back to his dormitory, opened the door, and prepared to go inside to rest.
At this moment, Bai Xiangqi, the operations staff officer who lived in the next dormitory, heard the noise, opened his door and greeted Sun Yushu.
"Old Sun, you've gone to eat alone again without even calling us," Bai Xiangqi teased with a smile.
Sun Yushu laughed and shook his head, saying, "Would I dare invite you? I secretly have a couple of drinks myself, and the Commander isn't too happy about that! If I lead you astray, do you think the Commander will forgive me!"
Bai Xiangqi laughed heartily. What Sun Yushu said was true. Zhang Zhengkui disliked his officers drinking, especially those around him. He only tolerated it because Sun Yushu was his old subordinate. But if Sun Yushu were to cause trouble and get others to drink, Zhang Zhengkui would never allow it.
"You're right, you like good wine, I like good cigarettes! Everyone needs a hobby in life, otherwise it would be too boring!" Bai Xiangqi said with a smile, then shook the cigarette pack in his hand, "Hadmen, have one!"
Sun Yushu curled his lip and waved his hand. He himself preferred drinking to smoking and knew that Bai Xiangqi's gesture was just a formality and lacked any sincerity.
"Forget it, I'm craving a cigarette too. It's too stuffy smoking in the room, I'll go for a walk." Bai Xiangqi chuckled, turned around, closed the door, and strolled away slowly.
Sun Yushu smiled slightly and went inside to rest.
Bai Xiangqi walked slowly, and soon came to a cypress tree. He lit a cigarette and smoked it leisurely. The embers in the cigarette butts flickered in the darkness, appearing exceptionally clear.
After finishing one cigarette, Bai Xiangqi took out the cigarette pack to refill it, but found it was empty. He shook his head, crumpled the pack, threw it beside a tree, and then turned and left.
Just then, in the dark corner, a figure was about to follow when he was stopped by someone. The person next to him whispered, "I'll go follow him. You stay here and keep an eye on the spot he's been staying in, and see if anyone approaches."
After saying that, the dark figure followed the direction in which Bai Xiangqi had disappeared.
