Chapter 41 Conversation in the Study

In the study, Chen Guangran, a seasoned official who had weathered many storms, gathered his thoughts and said, "Brother Ning said on the phone that your son brought Xiao Wan back from Jinling. Could you tell me the details?"

He harbored suspicions about Xiao Wan's disappearance. Initially, he believed that his enemy had kidnapped Xiao Wan to extort money from him.

Therefore, he kept quiet and searched in secret, waiting for news from the kidnappers, for fear of alerting them.

It wasn't until later that he realized something was wrong. The kidnappers hadn't contacted him, and fearing they might have harmed his daughter, he quickly reported the incident to the police.

Now that our daughter is back, we must find out the reason for what happened.

Ning Liangcai pointed at Ning Zhiheng and said with a smile, "I really don't know the specifics. I'll have to ask my son. He just graduated from the Army Officer School and works in the Logistics Department of the Nanjing Military Government."

Only then did Chen Guangran notice the young man beside Ning Liangcai. He had been in officialdom for many years, had extensive experience, and had observed countless people.

At first, I didn't pay much attention to this young man, but now that I look closely, I can see that he is different from others.

He sat upright in the chair, his posture clearly bearing the marks of a soldier. He was undoubtedly aware of his identity, yet he showed no sign of pandering.

He wore a smile, yet remained calm. He could clearly sense the arrogance within it!

"Brother, you graduated from the Whampoa Military Academy, a cradle of emperors and generals. You're a promising young talent who will surpass your elders!" Chen Guangran said with a friendly expression.

Ning Zhiheng repeatedly said he dared not, and exchanged a few polite pleasantries.

Then, the situation was explained step by step. Eight days prior, two human traffickers had been apprehended in Nanjing, and Xiao Wan had been found. Based on Xiao Wan's Hangzhou accent, it was initially determined that she was from Hangzhou, and she even knew her parents' names. Therefore, it was decided to escort her back to Hangzhou to find her family. Unexpectedly, things went so smoothly; they found Director Chen's family on the very day they arrived. The matter had such a satisfactory ending.

Chen Guangran felt a surge of relief. The world was unstable, and law and order were chaotic. To be able to travel and struggle for a complete stranger in such turbulent times was a stroke of good fortune; even Heaven couldn't bear to separate him from his own flesh and blood!

After a moment of contemplation, Chen Guangran's tone turned cold and stern as he asked, "Where are these two human traffickers now? Do you have any statements? Did someone instigate them?"

Ning Zhiheng could roughly guess what he was thinking—that he feared there was more to the story and someone was sabotaging things. So he said, "Director Chen, don't worry. These two human traffickers are still in custody at the Jinling Police Station. Their statements say they just saw Xiao Wan playing alone on the street on a whim. She's pretty and cute, and they thought she could fetch a good price, so they kidnapped her. It seems their statements don't mention anyone instigating them. However, if Director Chen is still worried, I'll send a telegram right away and have someone escort them to Hangzhou so you can handle them personally."

The information revealed in his words stirred something within Chen Guangran, who was well-versed in the rules of officialdom. To transport a criminal who committed a crime in Nanjing to Hangzhou across districts with just a telegram—the procedures involved were incredibly complex and complicated. This was far beyond the capabilities of a recent military academy graduate! This Ning Zhiheng was either spouting nonsense or was no ordinary person!

"So these two criminals are still in police custody. Will there be any problems? Those guys who habitually take bribes won't just release them once they've received their kickbacks," Chen Guangran asked again, still worried.

Ning Zhiheng raised his eyebrows and said with a hint of disdain, "Director Chen, don't worry, they won't dare to release people without my permission."

Upon hearing this, Chen Guangran's eyes lit up. Was it arrogance or confidence? There was probably more to this than met the eye. He possessed strong leverage over the police station, or at least a great deal of influence over the case.

This Ning Zhiheng is no ordinary person!

He thought for a moment and decided to ask: "I'm afraid you don't work in the logistics department, do you? Is it convenient for you to tell me directly?"

Ning Zhiheng understood the implication in his words; this man displayed the shrewdness and calculating nature of someone in officialdom. Clearly, he already regarded Ning Zhiheng as an equal.

Given Chen Guangran's cautious nature, he must have already made some guesses about his true identity. If he doesn't reveal his true identity, people might still think that he has tampered with Xiao Wan's affairs.

However, he did not blame Chen Guangran. If it were him, he would also be careful and not let go of any suspicious things when it came to the safety of his own family.

In truth, Ning Zhiheng had no intention of hiding it from them. Initially, it was merely to appease his mother, Sang Su'e, to reassure her and alleviate her concerns about his safety, given the inherent risks of espionage. For him, these past ten days had already brought him to the brink of death twice.

Furthermore, although the Military Intelligence Bureau is engaged in espionage work, as long as they are not intelligence agents who gather information or infiltrate, the identities of ordinary members do not need to be strictly kept secret.

"Director Chen's eyes are indeed sharp. I do not work in the logistics department, and there's no point in hiding it. After graduation, I joined the Nanjing Military Intelligence Investigation Bureau directly on my teacher's orders. I am currently serving as the captain of the action team!"

Actually, during a search operation for suspects, I stumbled upon the two human traffickers and rescued Xiao Wan. But, Director Chen, you know, in our line of work, many things involve confidentiality regulations, so I didn't tell my family about it at first.”

After saying that, Ning Zhiheng took out his military officer's ID card, placed it on the desk, and pushed it in front of Chen Guangran.
