It is important to understand that in the modern intelligence war, Shanghai was the center of a turbulent vortex and a major battlefield for various forces to compete for power. The Japanese, Russians, British, Americans, underground Communists, the Central Bureau of Investigation and Statistics (Zhongtong), and even the Military Bureau of Investigation and Statistics (Juntong) in which he belonged, none of them could ignore this core position. Whoever gained the upper hand here would have a significant advantage.
Ning Zhiheng went to great lengths to prepare in the early stages and laid so many foreshadowings, all in order to establish his own underground kingdom in Shanghai, accumulate his own power, and deliver a heavy blow to the heart of the Japanese.
Sun Jiacheng turned to Ning Zhiheng and asked, "I've prepared all the transfer procedures and documents. We'll go to the US consulate to register tomorrow. What do you think the name of this courtyard should be?"
Ning Zhiheng thought for a moment, then said in a deep voice, "Tan Mansion!"
At noon the next day, at Depp Hospital in Nanshi, all the wounded were hurriedly preparing their belongings. Many military vehicles were parked outside the gate, and officers were directing the process. The wounded followed orders and boarded the vehicles in an orderly manner.
Half an hour later, all the vehicles set off, and the once crowded Depp Hospital suddenly became much quieter, with only a few seriously injured patients who could not get up and could not move remaining.
Shortly after, a car sped up and stopped outside the gate. Ning Zhiheng quickly got out of the car, but as soon as he entered the hospital, he realized something was wrong. He quickly called over a medical staff member.
"Excuse me, where are the wounded from the hospital?" Ning Zhiheng asked gently.
"They've all been evacuated, leaving only some seriously wounded soldiers behind, who will be evacuated in a few days!" the nurse replied.
Ning Zhiheng was taken aback and nodded in disappointment. He had been so busy these past few days that he had only visited Miao Yongyi once. He had thought the evacuation would take a few more days, but he did not expect that the wounded in the hospital had already been evacuated today.
He and Miao Yongyi were not even able to see each other again. After the war broke out and the situation became chaotic, he didn't know when the two brothers would be able to meet again after this separation!
Seeing that he didn't ask any more questions, the nurse nodded and quickly left.
Just as Ning Zhiheng was about to leave in disappointment, he heard someone call out to him from behind: "Zhiheng, I'm here, why did it take you so long!"
Upon hearing the voice, Ning Zhiheng quickly turned around and saw a figure standing in the corridor—his brother, Miao Yongyi.
"Yongyi? Why didn't you leave?" Ning Zhiheng quickly stepped forward and came to Miao Yongyi's side.
"I don't want to leave!" Miao Yongyi smiled slightly at Ning Zhiheng.
This statement left Ning Zhiheng completely baffled. He initially thought that Miao Yongyi had missed the vehicle transporting the wounded, but it seemed from his tone that he genuinely didn't want to leave.
Seeing that Miao Yongyi was unsteady on his feet, he quickly stepped forward to support him and asked softly, "What are you planning to do? The Japanese are getting closer and closer. If you don't leave now, it will be difficult to get away in a few days."
Miao Yongyi did not answer his question, but instead glanced at Ning Zhiheng and asked with some curiosity, "Why is your special operations team still in Nanshi? So many days have passed, and you haven't had any combat missions?"
Ning Zhiheng paused for a moment, then smiled and replied, "You want to know? This is a military secret! I can't just tell you. Tell me what your plans are first, or I'll send a car directly back to the rear base. We can't afford to delay any longer."
Miao Yongyi sighed softly and said slowly, "To be honest, my troops are gone, and I don't know where to go when I get back. I was thinking of going with you to the Military Intelligence Investigation Department. You can just arrange a position for me."
Ning Zhiheng was quite surprised to hear this. He knew Miao Yongyi's character well; he was not someone who was afraid of death. These past few days, he had been thinking about recovering from his injuries and returning to the battlefield to avenge his comrades.
However, Miao Yongyi's suggestion also touched his heart; it was indeed a win-win solution.
