Before the officer could finish his report, Lieutenant General Naoya Tada could no longer contain himself. He slammed his hand on the table and shouted, "You idiots! This is a serious breach of military duty. The losses are so great that it's unbelievable. I'm going to send you all to a military court!"
Lieutenant General Naoya Tada's roar echoed throughout the room. All the officers dared not utter a word, standing bowed and waiting silently, fearing that the commander's rage would be unleashed upon them and burn them to ashes!
“Nagano, the two companies guarding the Fukuoka warehouse were your units. Now that the Fukuoka warehouse has been bombed and both companies have been wiped out, don’t you have anything to say?” Tada Naoya glared fiercely at a lieutenant colonel, who was Lieutenant Colonel Nagano, the officer in charge of guarding the Fukuoka warehouse.
Lieutenant Colonel Nagano was terrified. He never imagined that the Fukuoka warehouse and his two squadrons would be blown to smithereens overnight. It was a complete disaster.
"General, I—" Nagano tried to defend himself, but couldn't find any reason for a long time.
"I don't want to hear any more of your explanations. Take him away, Nagano. I hope you can act like a true samurai and give yourself a dignified end!"
Without a word, the guards stepped forward, grabbed the pale-faced Lieutenant Colonel Nagano from both sides, and dragged him away.
For a moment, the other officers were so frightened that they trembled and dared not utter a sound.
"So many warriors of the Empire died in their sleep in such a muddled way, and a huge amount of military resources were wasted. How am I supposed to explain this to the military?" Tada Naoya said through gritted teeth. He suddenly pointed at the officer beside him, "Have you found out? Who did this?"
Colonel Takashi Uemura, the military intelligence chief, looked at the furious Naoya Tada, sweat pouring down his forehead, and said in a low voice, "Sir, we are actively investigating, but the only ones capable of sabotaging our military targets are agents of the Chinese Military Intelligence Investigation Bureau. They are our old adversaries, and they have been responsible for several assassination attempts against our troops recently. Their activities are extremely rampant!"
Colonel Takashi Uemura's clever move subtly pointed the finger at the Special Higher Police, which was in charge of investigating the assassination case.
Taro Sagawa, who was standing nearby, quickly spoke up to argue, "Sir, I don't think we can simply link the bombing case and the assassination case together. In the assassination case we were in charge of, we found that these murderers only targeted some lone soldiers, at most firing shots from the shadows. It's hard to imagine that they had the ability to break through so many security guards and complete such a difficult bombing mission. Therefore, I think it was definitely the work of two different groups!"
Sagawa Taro's meaning was clear: the assassins in the assassination cases handled by the Special Higher Police were unrelated to the bombing cases, and the military's failure to protect military targets had absolutely nothing to do with the Special Higher Police.
Moreover, what he said was absolutely reasonable. The protection of military facilities has always been the responsibility of the military itself. The Fukuoka warehouse, as an important military facility, was protected by a large number of troops, but it was treated as nothing. The entire warehouse was blown to bits. He absolutely could not bear any responsibility for this.
Naoya Tada's face darkened as he watched the two of them passing the buck. He slammed his hand on the table, making a loud bang.
"It's too late to say all this now! Sagawa, I won't blame you for the bombing of the Fukuoka military warehouse, but the assassination case you're in charge of hasn't made any progress at all. How do you explain that to me?" Tada Naoya rebuked angrily.
This is clearly taking it out on me. Sagawa Taro couldn't help but complain inwardly, "Why are they bothering me instead of pursuing the responsibility of so many officers?"
He could only bow deeply and say respectfully, "We have made great progress in the assassination case and will have results soon. Please give me a little more time, and I will definitely not let you down!"
Naoya Tada snorted and ignored him, then turned to stare at Takashi Uemura. His sharp and fierce gaze made Takashi Uemura feel uneasy.
"Uemura, as the head of the military intelligence department, you are largely to blame for this major blunder. I would like to know your plans for the future."
Takashi Uemura quickly replied, "Your Excellency, I will immediately organize personnel to conduct an investigation and will definitely bring these saboteurs to justice. Please give me some time."
However, he stepped forward and continued, "These saboteurs are very likely to sabotage other military facilities. I urge Your Excellency to inform all garrison units to be on high alert and not to let your guard down."
Naoya Tada coldly replied, "I don't need you to remind me of these things; I will arrange them myself. However, this incident is very serious, and I will report it truthfully to the military. The subsequent punishment will depend on your luck."
As the officers left the commander's office, Takashi Uemura and Taro Sagawa exchanged a glare.
Sagawa Taro said with an unfriendly expression, "Uemura-kun, what did you mean just now? Didn't you see what happened to Nagano? Are you trying to drag me down with you?"
Although the Special Higher Police (THT) was under the jurisdiction of the military's intelligence department, it depended on the specific circumstances. When Major General Junpei Uehara was in charge of the intelligence department, he firmly held the upper hand over the THT, and Taro Sagawa naturally obeyed his orders.
However, the military intelligence chief who remained in Shanghai was only a colonel, which greatly diminished his influence.
Sagawa Taro was usually polite and peaceful, but today Uemura Takashi had directly dragged trouble into his hands, almost causing him a great loss. Naturally, he was furious and no longer cared about his usual dignity.
