Chapter 501 Let's do a fortune telling

Deng Yuankai arrived at the police station with several of his men, examined the bodies of the victims in the case, made a brief record, and then left the police station to go to the scene of the incident. Just as they left the police station, a car that had been waiting in the distance quietly followed behind them.

Deng Yuankai's job was simple: just take statements from some residents and shopkeepers living around the scene and keep attendance records. He wouldn't care about anything else after that. If anyone asked, he could just produce these records to prove that he had investigated. He could make up an excuse and no one would pursue the matter further.

After instructing his men to take statements, Deng Yuankai leaned against the hood of his car, lit a cigarette, and began to smoke it.

Just then, an old man wearing a worn-out Taoist robe, carrying a divination banner, with a short beard and a pair of tattered sunglasses walked over from the opposite side. He was a fortune teller who traveled from street to street.

He walked to a short distance from Deng Yuankai, then suddenly stopped and nodded in Deng Yuankai's direction.

Deng Yuankai felt a jolt of fear, his right hand quickly reaching for his waist, his eyes warily fixed on the fortune teller.

"Sir, you have vertical lines on your forehead, like dark clouds gathering overhead. You will soon face a bloody disaster. Why don't you come here for a divination to seek good fortune and avoid misfortune, and perhaps escape this calamity!" the fortune teller said calmly.

"Get lost! What kind of trash are you, showing off here!" A teammate next to him scolded. He was a local street thug, and he knew all too well that these fortune tellers were just smooth talkers who swindled people out of their money. They acted like wise old men in front of people, but behind their backs, their greedy behavior was unbearable.

Deng Yuankai glanced at the fortune teller but didn't see anything unusual. Besides, he had several team members with him, and he was also a skilled gunman, so he figured there wouldn't be any safety issues.

During this period, he experienced the biggest turning point in his life, and his thoughts naturally fluctuated greatly. He was feeling lost and empty about his future when he saw this fortune teller today. Suddenly, he had an idea. He gestured for his teammates to step aside, took a few steps forward, and said, "Sir, you said that I am facing a dark cloud and will soon suffer a bloody disaster. Do you know if there is a way to avert this?"

Since defecting to the enemy, Deng Yuankai has been unable to sleep soundly, suffering from nightmares almost every night. As the second son in his family, his parents, wife, and son were all in the Kuomintang-controlled area. This time, he had surrendered to the Japanese out of fear of death, and he didn't know what fate awaited his family. Now that he had become a traitor, their lives would likely become difficult. Would the Military Intelligence Bureau let them go? He was filled with worry and anxiety every day because of this!

Furthermore, the Military Intelligence Investigation Department has always been strictly governed by military law, and any defectors are eliminated. I don't know if I can escape with my life.

Now, when I see a fortune teller, even though I know their words are unreliable, I can't help but feel a glimmer of hope that they might be able to point me in the right direction.

When the fortune teller saw Deng Yuankai approaching, he smiled slightly and said, "My reputation as 'Iron-Tongued Liu' isn't for nothing. Very well, I'll give this gentleman a divination first. If it's inaccurate, I'll turn around and leave. If it's accurate, how about we do another divination?"

Upon hearing this, Deng Yuankai immediately became interested. The fortune teller's tone was quite arrogant, so he decided to give it a try. He nodded and said, "Please tell my fortune first, sir. If it's inaccurate, just take it as a joke. If it's accurate, I'll double the fee!"

“Alright! It’s a deal! But there are rules to fortune telling; you can’t just say anything in the street. Come, let’s go under the shade of this tree over here.” The fortune teller pointed to a lush willow tree next to them and said to Deng Yuankai.

Deng Yuankai frowned, then looked back at his teammates and nodded. He followed the fortune teller to the willow tree, with his teammates following closely behind. One of the more clever teammates fetched two stools from a nearby shop and placed them under the tree, where the fortune teller and Deng Yuankai sat facing each other.

The fortune teller chuckled and explained, “My family of fortune tellers is different from others. We never perform divination in the open air. Fortune telling reveals heavenly secrets, so there must be something alive overhead to shield us. Trees, in particular, are full of life and can take the blame for me, avoiding any danger!”

"Old man, stop trying to be mysterious. We've seen plenty of this kind of guy. If you can't give us a straight answer today, don't even think about leaving here standing up!" One of the team members, seeing him acting all mysterious, brandished his pistol in front of the fortune teller.

"Haha! You're joking! Traveling thousands of miles is not tiring, but to find the solution, you still need to consult the Taoist priest. I believe that everyone has their own path in life, and what you get may come unexpectedly!" The fortune teller was used to traveling the world and had seen a lot, so he didn't take it seriously.

Seeing the fortune teller's serious demeanor, Deng Yuankai's expression grew even more solemn. He straightened up and sat opposite the fortune teller, allowing the fortune teller to examine him carefully.

The fortune teller examined him carefully, stroked his short beard with his right hand, and finally spoke: "This gentleman has a long face and high cheekbones. He has both parents who are still alive and well, is that correct?"

Deng Yuankai is thirty-six years old this year. He is the second son in his family. His parents are over sixty years old, which is considered a long life in this day and age. The fortune teller determined at a glance that both of his parents were still alive, which shocked Deng Yuankai. It seems that this person has real skills!

“Yes, sir, you’re absolutely right. Please continue with your divination. I won’t shortchange you a single penny!” Deng Yuankai nodded and said.

"Your eyebrows are thick and without any breaks, indicating you are destined to have a son with promising fortune. He will surely achieve great things in the future. Congratulations!"
