Chapter 502 Struggle and Repeated Struggles

Deng Yuankai was in a daze and unaware of what was happening until his team members had finished their investigation and taken statements, at which point he came to his senses.

He rubbed his stiff face, wiped away the faint tear stains, and without saying a word, waved for everyone to leave. The group then took a car back to the investigation department.

Deng Yuankai handed over the confessions to the archives for filing and storage, and then went to Cui Guangqi's office to report the situation.

Upon seeing Deng Yuankai return, Cui Guangqi didn't say much. This was just a perfunctory task, and no one would actually investigate the matter.

"Director, I think I've caught a bit of a chill today, and I have a headache. I'd like to go home and rest early!" Deng Yuankai said.

Since becoming the deputy director of the Investigation Department, Cui Guangqi has never let his guard down; on the contrary, his vigilance has only grown stronger. He knows that he has betrayed too many comrades and caused the deaths of his longtime comrades-in-arms. The Military Intelligence Investigation Department will definitely come to eliminate him; it's only a matter of time.

He no longer trusts anyone else, not even the other team members who have surrendered, so he takes several of his trusted subordinates with him wherever he goes, in case someone tries to assassinate him.

The Special Agents Detective Division has its own dormitory area, not far from the office building, where intelligence station agents and non-local personnel rest.

However, Cui Guangqi never left the detective bureau compound at night. He would rest in the inner room of his office, and his trusted subordinates would take turns guarding him. Otherwise, he would not dare to fall asleep. These past two days, Deng Yuankai and Pei Tai were on duty, so Deng Yuankai had to go back to rest early and ask Cui Guangqi for leave.

Hearing that Deng Yuankai's voice was indeed a little hoarse, Cui Guangqi nodded and agreed, "If you're not feeling well, go back and rest. Let Xiao Tai keep watch over you today!"

At this point, he suddenly remembered something and continued, "Was it because you went to the police station to examine the body today and encountered something unclean? Did you burn some mugwort when you got home to ward off evil spirits?"

Upon hearing this, Deng Yuankai and Pei Tai were both stunned. Cui Guangqi had never believed in such things before. He often said that he only believed in the gun in his hand and that everything else was fake. But now he actually believed in these things. It was clear that he no longer had his previous convictions. In the end, he had a guilty conscience and was willing to believe that there really were ghosts in this world!

Deng Yuankai was also distracted by the fortune teller's words today. He didn't want to stay any longer and let Cui Guangqi see through his act, so he forced a smile and said, "I'll just go back and drink some hot water. I'll have to trouble Xiao Tai tonight!"

Pei Tai was the youngest among these confidants, but he was also Cui Guangqi's most trusted confidant. He smiled and said, "Brother Deng, don't worry, nothing will happen with me here. You should go back and rest!"

Deng Yuankai nodded, then turned and left the room. Watching his departing figure, Cui Guangqi's eyes flashed with suspicion. He turned to Pei Tai and instructed, "Go and ask Deng's team about today's fieldwork. See if there's anything unusual!"

Pei Tai quickly nodded in agreement and left. A short while later, he turned back and reported, "I asked around and found nothing unusual today. First, we went to the police station to examine the body, and then we went to the scene to take statements. It was all just a formality. Brother Deng didn't do anything; his subordinates did all the work. He even went to a fortune teller who happened to be passing by and got swindled out of a lot of money! He came back after taking his statement."

"They consulted the oracle? Old Deng never believed in these things before!" Cui Guangqi sighed softly, it seemed he wasn't the only one with something to hide. "What did they say?"

Pei Tai shook his head and said, "I didn't hear clearly because it was a bit far away, but it's in full view of everyone, so there shouldn't be any problems."

Cui Guangqi knew he was being overly cautious. If he really wanted to do something underhanded, he wouldn't do it in front of so many people. It was just a whim. Besides, Deng Yuankai had been with him for many years and was his most capable subordinate. He was indeed being a bit too suspicious!

"Alright, go ahead. Arrange for a few more people to keep watch tonight!" Cui Guangqi instructed.

"yes!"

That night, Deng Yuankai lay in his bed, unable to fall asleep for a long time. He tossed and turned, constantly recalling every word the fortune teller had said to him during the day.

"My heart is plunged into an endless abyss of hell, from which I will never find release!"

"Life is so close, yet you've gone to such lengths to find it. You're so lost and don't know where you're going. Getting up is the turning point! Since you've taken the wrong path, just go back. Only then can you find true liberation. It's never too late!"

"A heart ailment must be cured by a heart remedy; the one who tied the knot must untie it; a prodigal son who returns is more precious than gold; he returns home in glory to become a virtuous minister!"

He tossed and turned, constantly recalling his elderly parents, his virtuous wife, and especially his intelligent and sensible son.

We can't keep making this mistake. We have to take a gamble and fight for a chance of survival for ourselves and our families.

If I stay here, I will not only have to worry about the Military Intelligence Bureau's anti-traitor squad coming after me and my life being in danger, but my family members in the Kuomintang-controlled area will also be labeled as the family members of traitors and may even be purged.

We must escape back, leave this place, and return to MI6 headquarters!

However, under the threat of the Japanese, he not only wrote a confession and took photos for his records, but also gave a confession and signed a document revealing intelligence. This evidence was enough for the Military Intelligence Investigation Department to sentence him to death. He was now suffering day and night, caught between life and death!

Oh, and the fortune teller's last poem: "A heart ailment must be cured by a heart remedy; the one who tied the knot must untie it; a prodigal son's return is more precious than gold; he returns home in glory to become a virtuous minister!"

The one who tied the knot must untie it!

He believed he had betrayed his country and become a traitor because Cui Guangqi had sold him out. Now, he was determined to eliminate Cui Guangqi to prove his innocence. He could claim that his previous defection was a result of learning from Qi Jingwu, a period of hardship and humiliation to eliminate traitors. Once he accomplished this great deed, the confessions, photographs, and testimonies would be irrelevant. He could even achieve great merit and return to his rightful self, fulfilling the final promise:
