Back in his office, Deng Yuankai turned around and locked the door tightly. He then threw the stack of banknotes on his desk without even glancing at them, and sat down in his chair, not wanting to move at all.
The scene from last night kept flashing before my eyes. It was obvious that Cui Guangqi had already suspected me. I was just lucky that Pei Tai accidentally interrupted my actions just before I was about to poison him, otherwise I would be dead by now.
Cui Guangqi was far too vigilant. He was already under suspicion, and it would be difficult to find another opportunity to strike. Deng Yuankai couldn't help but feel annoyed. He didn't understand what went wrong. Now he was in a bind. If Cui Guangqi hadn't been on guard, he might have had a chance of success in assassinating him. But now, if he forced his way in, he would have little chance of survival!
His newly ignited patriotic fervor to eliminate traitors was doused with cold water, and Deng Yuankai couldn't help but sigh deeply! He decided to wait and see how things unfolded.
That night, Pei Tai and Deng Yuankai were on duty again, and their team members were also stationed nearby, taking turns to keep watch.
Deng Yuankai and Pei Tai chatted for a while in Cui Guangqi's office. Seeing that it was still early, they said goodbye to the two of them and went back to their own offices to rest.
Watching Deng Yuankai leave, Cui Guangqi said softly, "Old Deng's health isn't very good right now. He has no energy at all, and he can't even stay up for one night!"
"I think Brother Deng is homesick!" Pei Tai nodded dismissively, casually tapping his cigarette on the ashtray and flicking off the ash.
Cui Guangqi had sharp eyes and quickly noticed the clear bloodstains on the cigarette holder in Pei Tai's hand. He frowned and said sternly, "Why are you bleeding again? Didn't I tell you to drink less? Are you out of your mind?!"
Seeing Cui Guangqi's long face, Pei Tai quickly put away his cigarette and said sullenly, "I haven't drunk any for the past two days. The doctor said that's how liver disease is, you can only drag it out like this. Unless you use sulfonamides for long-term treatment, there's no good way. But sulfonamides are so expensive now, even if I were killed, I couldn't afford that much money. Besides, even if you had the money, you couldn't buy sulfonamides now. I guess I'll just have to endure it like this!"
Pei Tai had always been Cui Guangqi's lackey. He was also single and had no family responsibilities. It was Cui Guangqi who brought him into the Military Intelligence Investigation Department. So after he was arrested, when Cui Guangqi showed up and tried to persuade him to surrender, Pei Tai, who was originally very stubborn and refused to talk no matter what, quickly surrendered.
Pei Tai was also the most trusted confidant among Cui Guangqi's close associates. He had no flaws, except for one bad habit: he loved alcohol. He couldn't be happy without it, and because of this, he didn't even look for women, for fear that a woman would control him and stop him from drinking. He lived a carefree life by himself.
However, after a long period of heavy drinking, he developed liver disease, and later he frequently experienced nosebleeds and gum bleeding. In severe cases, the nosebleeds were unstoppable.
Cui Guangqi was well aware of his problem and had repeatedly warned him to quit drinking, but how could he possibly quit? Every time, he would scold him a few times and then quit for a few days, only to secretly start drinking again. It was completely useless!
As for his suggestion of using sulfonamides for long-term treatment, the price of sulfonamides on the Shanghai black market has already skyrocketed, and even then, there is no market for them. They are simply unavailable. Even if Cui Guangqi wanted to help him, he would be powerless to do so.
Cui Guangqi pointed at Pei Tai angrily, speechless for a long time. He stepped forward, grabbed Pei Tai by the collar, and pulled a flat wine pot from his pocket.
Pei Tai's eyes lit up with anxiety when he saw the wine jug being snatched, but he didn't dare to argue with Cui Guangqi. He could only give up helplessly and said with a grin, "Brother, I'll try quitting for two days. If it doesn't work, you must give it back to me. This is my lifeline!"
When Pei Tai and Cui Guangqi were alone, they always addressed each other as brothers. Cui Guangqi was extremely annoyed by him, so he reached out, opened the drawer, threw the flat wine pot into it, and then slammed it shut.
Then, he glared fiercely at Pei Tai and said menacingly, "You absolutely must quit drinking this time, or I'll lock you in solitary confinement. I'm not kidding!"
Pei Tai's face fell, but he forced a smile and nodded in agreement. After all, this wasn't the first time he'd quit drinking; he could wait a few more days, and Cui Guangqi would eventually release him anyway.
Just then, the phone on his desk rang. Cui Guangqi immediately picked it up, put it down a moment later, and said to Pei Tai, "We have an operation tonight. We're going out in two hours!"
"Where are you going?" Pei Tai asked curiously. Cui Guangqi usually didn't go out at night, for fear of being ambushed.
"Good news! This cargo owner has powerful connections. He wants to pay up and has asked us to come and talk. We'll bring more men and squeeze some extra money out of them!" Cui Guangqi said smugly. These people are unlucky to have fallen into his hands.
After thinking for a moment, Cui Guangqi solemnly instructed, "These guys are no pushovers either. We need to be extra careful. You absolutely cannot drink any more tonight. Stay sober when we go on the mission later, or you might get caught off guard!"
He knew Pei Tai was fond of wine, but he could still distinguish between what was important and what was urgent. As long as he gave specific instructions, Pei Tai would not dare to disobey his orders.
"I understand, don't worry, brother!" Pei Tai nodded repeatedly in agreement. He didn't want to listen to Cui Guangqi's nagging anymore, so he stood up and said, "We're going to take action tonight. I'll go tell Brother Deng so we can make preparations in advance!"
Cui Guangqi nodded and waved for him to leave.
