The next morning, Wei Liangbi knocked on the door of Ning Zhiheng's office and entered. Looking at Ning Zhiheng sitting at his desk, he asked with a smile, "Zhiheng, what brings you here?"
Ning Zhiheng smiled but didn't say anything while sitting in his chair. Instead, he stood up and walked over to Wei Liangbi.
Wei Liangbi noticed that Ning Zhiheng was wearing a crisp colonel's uniform and was somewhat surprised. Ning Zhiheng rarely wore military uniforms unless there were formal events or military operations. He usually wore a Zhongshan civilian suit.
"What, is there an event today?" Wei Liangbi asked in confusion. He was the deputy director in charge of daily operations, and he was usually notified of any events held by the bureau, but he hadn't heard anything about it.
Ning Zhiheng shook his head and said, "Senior brother! I have something to discuss with you!"
Upon hearing this, Wei Liangbi immediately sensed something was wrong. He stepped back and instinctively reached for his waist.
Although Wei Liangbi's skills were not as good as Ning Zhiheng's, he was still a highly skilled fighter. His reactions were extremely quick, leaving Ning Zhiheng at a loss for what to do.
"Senior brother!"
At this moment, a shout came from behind Wei Liangbi, causing him to freeze and turn to the side. Behind him stood Ning Zhiheng, who was wearing a colonel's uniform.
"Zhiheng?"
Wei Liangbi was somewhat confused by the scene before him. Two identical Ning Zhihengs had suddenly appeared in an office. However, he knew very well that the first Ning Zhiheng was definitely suspicious.
Ning Zhiheng behind him laughed and waved to Tan Jinhui, signaling him to stand in front of him. The two stood side by side, making Wei Liangbi feel a little dazed and confused.
"Senior brother, do you think this person looks a bit like me?" Ning Zhiheng asked with a smile.
Upon hearing this, Wei Liangbi immediately confirmed Ning Zhiheng's true identity and relaxed. He carefully examined the two men's appearances and clothing, and after a while, he couldn't help but nod in admiration, saying, "In terms of appearance, there is almost no difference. Even their eyes are imitated perfectly. I would have difficulty distinguishing them myself. However, his accent is different. Although it is also a Hangzhou accent, which is somewhat similar to yours, your voice is a bit thicker, steady, and powerful, while his voice is a bit thin and lacks some confidence."
Wei Liangbi's keen observation immediately pinpointed Tan Jinhui's key difference, leaving Ning Zhiheng somewhat discouraged. It seemed that this flaw was indeed significant, but the problem was difficult to solve. Local accents could be learned, but everyone's voice was different, and in subtle ways, it was hard to hide from those who knew them well.
"Chief, please give me some more time, and I will definitely be able to imitate your voice exactly," Tan Jinhui said apologetically from the side.
He had spent so much time practicing and was originally full of confidence that he could fool everyone, but today, on his first appearance, he was seen through at a glance. His debut was a failure, and he was afraid that the director would blame him.
Ning Zhiheng looked at him and said, "You can see it too, your accent is a big problem. You still need to practice more."
"Yes, Your Excellency will practice more and will not let you down!" Tan Jinhui assured him repeatedly.
Wei Liangbi asked, "Zhiheng, are you preparing to return to Shanghai?"
He knew that Ning Zhiheng had many affairs in Shanghai and could not stay in Chongqing for too long. The appearance of this stand-in made him realize that his junior brother was preparing to leave.
Ning Zhiheng said, "Yes, time waits for no one. I must return to Shanghai as soon as possible, otherwise something bad could easily happen. Senior brother, after I leave, I'll leave everything to you."
"No problem. I'm here as the deputy director to be your steward, so you don't need to worry."
Ning Zhiheng nodded and then said, "Let's go report to the Director together; there are some things we need to discuss."
After saying that, he picked up the phone and dialed a number.
What Ning Zhiheng needed to report to Huang Xianzheng was the issue of Tan Jinhui's use. Tan Jinhui was the stand-in he planned to keep at the Chongqing headquarters. This way, when Ning Zhiheng was working in Shanghai, Tan Jinhui would deliberately appear at the Chongqing headquarters at the same time, according to his instructions, so that no one could connect Fujiwara Tomohito in Shanghai with Ning Zhiheng in Chongqing.
However, if this method is used, Tan Jinhui's existence must be known to a few people, because such an arrangement cannot be kept secret from these people.
First, there's the Director. As the highest-ranking officer of the Military Intelligence Bureau, he was naturally well aware of Ning Zhiheng's whereabouts. When Ning Zhiheng appeared in two places at the same time, Tan Jinhui's identity was self-evident; it couldn't be hidden from him at all.
Then there are Huang Xianzheng and Wei Liangbi. For the same reason as the Director, they clearly know that Ning Zhiheng must stay in Shanghai to oversee important work. The Ning Zhiheng who appears at headquarters can only be a substitute. Moreover, the work ahead will require the cooperation and cover of the two of them to better ensure Ning Zhiheng's safety in Shanghai.
The last person, of course, is Sun Jiacheng. After all, he was Tan Jinhui's instructor and the most important link in the Shadow Project. His current position is the bodyguard captain of Ning Zhiheng, the director of the Second Operations Division. He can control and monitor Tan Jinhui at any time to prevent any accidents from happening.
Aside from the three of them, Ning Zhiheng wouldn't let anyone know about the existence of Shadow, including Miao Yongyi.
If Miao Yongyi knew the inside story, it would be easy for his underground organization to find out, making it difficult to control the scope of those in the know. The existence of the Shadow would then be meaningless. However, Miao Yongyi himself requested to take charge of the work independently and is currently still in Wuhan, which saves him a lot of trouble. Otherwise, given his familiarity with Ning Zhiheng, he could have identified Tan Jinhui at a glance.
