Chapter 760 Paying Homage to the Director

The two drove back to Wei Liangbi's house, knocked on the gate, and were greeted by guards and servants who led them into the house.

Wei Liangbi's house was very quiet, with only a few guards and two servants. Ning Zhiheng looked around and asked curiously, "Senior brother, didn't you say you were going to bring your parents to Chongqing? How come it seems like you're still living alone!"

Wei Liangbi's hometown is Yueyang, Hunan, which is very close to the important city of Changsha. He is the second son in his family. His parents are still alive, and he has an older brother who works in the government in Changsha.

Hearing Ning Zhiheng's question, Wei Liangbi said helplessly, "Alas! I had planned to do this, but I didn't expect that since we came to Chongqing, we've been bombed every few days, and so many people have died. Even after bringing the two elderly people here, I'm still worried. My brother is in Changsha, so I brought them to Changsha. They're safe for now, but with this war, I don't know how they'll be doing!"

Wei Liangbi's words make sense; Chongqing is not entirely safe these days.

“Nowhere is a pure land!” Ning Zhiheng shook his head and said no more.

"Alright, you must be tired too. You have a lot to do tomorrow, so get some rest!"

"I'm okay, but I'm definitely a bit tired." Ning Zhiheng couldn't help but yawn.

Having traveled thousands of miles and been exhausted by now, he didn't say much and rested in his room.

Nothing happened that night. Early the next morning, Ning Zhiheng got up, tidied himself up, and went to a barbershop nearby to get his hair trimmed to the same short style as Tan Jinhui's. Then, he had Wei Liangbi drive him to his official residence.

The official residence was now deserted, and the outer gate was locked. The guards who were originally responsible for protecting him had been transferred by Wei Liangbi. These men often spent time with Tan Jinhui and might have noticed Ning Zhiheng's difference, so Wei Liangbi transferred them in advance.

Ning Zhiheng took out his key, opened the courtyard gate, and went inside. He had lived in this residence for a period of time before and was familiar with everything inside. In addition, the house was tidy and organized. He quickly took out a brand-new military uniform and changed into it. He looked at himself carefully in the mirror and slowly adjusted his expression until the same cold-eyed, upright young officer appeared in the mirror frame again. Only then did Ning Zhiheng nod in satisfaction. He tidied himself up briefly and left the residence quickly again.

Back in the car, Wei Liangbi asked as he drove, "The original guards have all been transferred. You need guards now. What are your plans?"

Ning Zhiheng thought for a moment and then asked, "Is Zhao Jiang still in the action team?"

Wei Liangbi nodded and said, "He is still in the First Operations Section, serving as the head of the operations team."

Zhao Jiang was Ning Zhiheng's protégé. Despite his low military rank, Ning Zhiheng still assigned him the position of action team leader when the Second Action Division of the Military Intelligence Bureau was established.

Ning Zhiheng grunted and then ordered, "Transfer his action team over here. They'll temporarily serve as my bodyguards. By the way, his rank is still captain."

When Wei Liangbi heard Ning Zhiheng's question, his tone was calm and without any sense of blame. He then replied softly, "He is still a captain. I originally planned to find an opportunity to arrange something for him, but he was just promoted to captain a year ago. As a field-grade officer, there still needs to be an explanation."

Wei Liangbi knew that Zhao Jiang was Ning Zhiheng's protégé, so he took good care of Zhao Jiang in his work. Now that Ning Zhiheng asked about it, he was afraid that Ning Zhiheng would think that he was not taking care of his old subordinates, so he explained that a year ago, Ning Zhiheng had just promoted Zhao Jiang from lieutenant to captain.

Ning Zhiheng smiled slightly and waved his hand, saying, "I know that. Without great merit, one cannot be promoted to the rank of colonel. This rule cannot be changed. The reason I brought him along this time is to find an opportunity to arrange something for him. It's a bit conspicuous for a lieutenant to serve as the action team leader. It's better to promote him as soon as possible."

As the military commander, Ning Zhiheng naturally had the final say on these matters.

Wei Liangbi said with a smile, "Zhao Jiang is quite lucky. Following you, a big shot, he won't have to worry about the future!"

Ning Zhiheng smiled knowingly. He was not at an advantage in personnel arrangements in the Second Operations Division, mainly because he lacked resources and didn't have many capable people in his pocket. His main cronies were concentrated in Shanghai. Now that he had returned to Chongqing, it seemed he was going to make some arrangements and cultivate some of his own people in the Second Operations Division.

"Let's go to headquarters first. The Director must already know I'm back and is probably waiting for me to pay him a visit, so let's not delay."

"good!"

Ning Zhiheng didn't speak again. He quietly looked at the scenery outside the car and carefully considered the specific arrangements.

By this time, the shops on both sides of the street had already opened for business, and the street vendors had set up their stalls. The noisy shouts of vendors could be heard all the time, and the flow of people began to increase.

Chongqing is located amidst mountains and rivers, and is humid and hot all year round with a long rainy season. The air always carries a damp smell, making people feel a bit stuffy. However, Ning Zhiheng grew up in Hangzhou and spent most of his time in Shanghai, both of which are humid and rainy areas, so he did not feel uncomfortable.

The streets of Chongqing were not easy to travel on. In many places, the roads were paved with mountain stones, making the ride quite bumpy. This was because, in order to save money during the road construction, local materials were used, and stones quarried from nearby mountains were used to pave the roads. The roads were not wide to begin with, and with the large number of people on the streets, Wei Liangbi's carriage did not move very fast.

After quite some time, they finally arrived at the headquarters of the Military Intelligence Bureau. The vehicle drove right up to the gate, and the guard officer, of course, recognized Wei Liangbi's car. Upon seeing Wei Liangbi, he immediately saluted. At that moment, he suddenly noticed Ning Zhiheng sitting to the side and was immediately startled.
