Ning Zhiheng and the others soon arrived at the residence of the Yi family. It was an independent house, and although it was not large, it was a rare residence in Chongqing.
The yard was kept spotless inside and out, showing that the woman of the house was a capable housewife.
When Yu Cheng first met Yi Dong's wife, she was probably in her thirties. Her face was pretty, but she couldn't hide a trace of sadness. She looked at Yu Cheng with a faint expression. Behind her was a girl of about seven or eight years old, who was Yi Dong's daughter.
Yu Cheng stepped forward and said gently, "I'm so sorry, Mrs. Yi, but I still need to ask you some questions about Mr. Yi today."
Mrs. Yi said hesitantly, "Team Leader Yu, you've asked me several times already. I've said everything I need to say. It's been over a month. Just give me the truth: is there something wrong with my husband's death? Wasn't he bombed to death by the Japanese?"
Mrs. Yi was also a shrewd woman. From her several encounters with Yu Cheng, she could tell that the Military Intelligence Bureau headquarters did not agree with Yi Dong's death. However, since Yi Dong was bombed to death by Japanese planes, and the whole process was clear, she couldn't figure out what the problem was.
Yu Cheng looked at Mrs. Yi and didn't know how to answer for a moment. Ning Zhiheng behind him spoke up: "Mrs. Yi, Mr. Yi was too important to our Military Intelligence Bureau. His death was a great surprise to everyone in the Bureau. Therefore, we have to be careful about the cause of his death. But don't worry, this is the last investigation. We will not bother you again after this."
Mrs. Yi looked up at Ning Zhiheng, the tall and upright young man with a serious and solemn expression. She nodded and agreed, "Not at all, it's not like we're bothering you. The bureau has taken good care of my daughter and me. I know what's good for us. Please ask us anything."
Mrs. Yi ushered the group into the house and poured them tea. Ning Zhiheng then asked, "We just want to ask if Mr. Yi showed any unusual behavior on the day he passed away. Although it was the 16th, a day off, we know he often works overtime. Why didn't he work overtime that day?"
Mrs. Yi replied softly, "My husband is usually too busy with work and rarely spends time with my daughter and me. That day was his day off, and he was in a rare good mood, so he planned to take us to see a movie and didn't go to work."
Ning Zhiheng asked curiously, "Go to the movies? But you didn't end up going?"
Mrs. Yi sighed and said sadly, "This is fate! If we had gone, my husband might not have been bombed to death by the Japanese. This morning, my husband felt unwell. He felt very dizzy after walking a few steps. This is an old problem of his. Usually, he just needs to take some medicine and rest."
So we didn't go out. We gave him some medicine we had at home and he rested in bed. But not long after, Japanese planes came, and like before, he absolutely refused to go to the air-raid shelter. I had no choice but to leave with my daughter. Who knew we'd be so unlucky this time…”
After saying this, Mrs. Yi could no longer hold back her tears and began to sob softly.
Sure enough, there was a problem. Ning Zhiheng and the others' eyes lit up, and they quickly asked, "When did Mr. Yi start feeling unwell? Was it before or after breakfast?"
Mrs. Yi thought for a moment and replied, "It was before breakfast. He felt a little dizzy when he woke up early in the morning, but it wasn't severe. It didn't hurt or itch. He would feel dizzy after standing for a while, but he would be fine after resting."
"Has Mr. Yi ever had these symptoms before?"
"It's happened a few times before, but I saw a doctor at the bureau. The doctor said it was a neurological problem caused by overworking the brain and anxiety. He said that resting more and taking some medicine would be fine."
"Has Mr. Yi been feeling anxious lately?"
"No, he was in a great mood those days. He said things were going very well at work and the bureau even gave him a bonus. Otherwise, he wouldn't have been in the mood to take my daughter and me to the movies."
Ning Zhiheng and Yu Cheng exchanged a glance, then Ning Zhiheng asked, "Did Mr. Yi eat anything the night before the incident?"
The Japanese likely sabotaged Yi Dong's diet by manipulating his food. Since he felt unwell upon waking up in the morning, it's highly probable that he was infected the night before.
"The night before?" Mrs. Yi thought carefully and then said, "The night before was dinner at home. It was just some rice and dishes that I cooked. Nothing special. At most, I cooked a few extra dishes to go with their drinks."
"Them?" Ning Zhiheng immediately perked up and asked in a deep voice, "Mr. Yi drank that night? With whom did you drink?"
"Who else could it be? Gu Zhengqing. The two of them often have a few drinks together. That night, they insisted on coming over to drink with my husband, so I had to cook some snacks to go with their drinks. They chatted until very late."
Gu Zhengqing? A figure immediately appeared in Ning Zhiheng's mind. It was the man in his early thirties whom he had met in the decoding room today. He was relatively friendly to Ning Zhiheng, unlike the cold attitude he had towards others.
Yu Cheng explained, "Both Gu Zhengqing and Mr. Yi returned from studying in Japan and are about the same age, so they naturally get along well."
However, Ning Zhiheng disagreed. Judging from Mrs. Yi's tone, she didn't seem to like Gu Zhengqing, so he asked, "Why did Gu Zhengqing come to see Mr. Yi for drinks? Was it just to chat? Did he say he had something to discuss?"
Mrs. Yi shook her head and replied, "I don't drink alcohol, so I went back to my room early to rest with the children. I don't know what they were talking about, but this Gu Zhengqing isn't a decent person either, and I rarely talk to him."
