Chapter Fifteen: The Miraculous Reappearance

He stood up, placed his hands on the edge of the desk, and said anxiously, "It's been two days. We can't let him drag this on. Doesn't the interrogation department have any solutions?"

"It's going to be very difficult to break through for now. If we use any more methods, he probably won't be able to hold on and will be crippled. Then he'll be completely worthless." Wei Liangbi was also at a loss. The action section was also involved in this case, and the action team lost several lives. If there is a major breakthrough, the action section can also get a share of the credit.

Seeing Ning Zhiheng's anxious expression, he spread his hands and comforted him, "Don't worry, our mission is actually complete now. Next, it's the intelligence department and the interrogation department's turn. They will notify us as soon as they make a breakthrough. For now, we can only wait."

Zhiheng, some things are beyond our control. To be honest, we started too late in the field of espionage; the Japanese are far ahead.

They have long harbored ambitions toward China, and even planned to place spies and pawns in China long ago.

Back then, we hadn't even established a formal intelligence department yet! Now, Japanese spies are present in almost every department of our government.

In 1932, during the Shanghai Incident, our troops had just begun to mobilize when the action plan was already on the desks of the Japanese General Staff. We only learned of this a few years later when we accidentally seized a meeting summary from the Japanese army at that time.

This is why the principal has strongly supported the development of our military intelligence department in recent years. In the past two years, we have also captured quite a few Japanese spies, but they were all small fry, and we haven't made any major gains.

What's frightening is that one of the captured Japanese spies was a former member of the Tongmenghui (Revolutionary Alliance) who had studied in Japan.

The more they investigate, the more chilling it becomes. They have their own independent spy teams in key departments within our organization. We are like a body riddled with holes, leaking air everywhere.

Looking at ourselves, we can only passively defend now. We have no effective intelligence sources within the Japanese army. We're like a blind man waiting to be attacked—it's truly pathetic!

Ning Zhiheng was shocked by Wei Liangbi's words. He knew that Japanese spies were rampant, but he did not expect it to have reached such a serious level.

Many of the consultations he learned in his previous life did not have detailed records of this aspect, and even the information he reviewed in the archives was only a small part.

One document shows that military maps drawn by China itself during the Republic of China period were actually less accurate than tourist maps of China drawn by the Japanese.

Even during the War of Resistance against Japan and the War of Liberation, many Chinese troops used maps drawn by the Japanese.

It is evident that the Japanese at that time had a thorough understanding of China, surpassing even the Chinese themselves. Just look at the "tourist map" they drew; it could be used directly as a military map. It would have been impossible to draw such a detailed and terrifying "tourist map" without tens of thousands of people traveling all over China.

This involves city defenses and terrain across the country, requiring a large-scale investment of manpower and resources for systematic surveying.

This is precisely what makes Japan so terrifying: it can endure for decades to prepare for the invasion of a country. It's truly frightening to think about!

Only now do we realize how dire the situation has become. No wonder the Japanese army swept through cities and territories with unstoppable momentum in the early stages of the war. This was not entirely due to the disparity in military strength, but more so because they had made ample preparations for the war and held a significant advantage in intelligence warfare.

Just as they were talking, the phone rang. Wei Liangbi answered it. An urgent voice came from the other end, and his expression grew increasingly grim. Finally, he cursed "useless" and slammed the phone down.

Hanging up the phone, veins bulging on his forehead, he angrily said to Ning Zhiheng, "Those useless bastards in the interrogation department, they were blinded by greed, they put Fu Cheng in the electric chair, he was already dead on the spot, now he's barely clinging to life. Now they remember us, telling us and the intelligence department to go check on him. They're trying to dump this mess on us, they're up to no good!"

Upon hearing this, Ning Zhiheng knew things were going to get complicated; this lead had completely dried up. The intelligence department had been monitoring them for over a month, and the action department had lost so many members. Now, all their previous efforts had been in vain. Clearly, the interrogation department also knew time was of the essence, and under pressure from above, they had gone too far, ultimately botching the job.

"So what do we do now?" Ning Zhiheng asked hesitantly.

Wei Liangbi looked indignant and helpless: "This case is one we handled. Once we're involved, we can't get rid of it. It's reasonable for them to ask us to make the final arrangements. We can only go and see what happens, and leave the rest to fate!"

Ning Zhiheng also insisted on going. He was truly unwilling to accept this outcome. After putting in so much effort, it had all come to nothing. He wanted to see for himself whether there was any hope of getting any information out of Fu Cheng. Perhaps a miracle would happen?

The two hurriedly left the house. The interrogation department was just a short distance away, in an inconspicuous three-story office building.

The upper three floors are offices, while the lower three floors are prisons where important prisoners are held and interrogated. Therefore, security is tight and guarded. Even Wei Liang and Ning Zhiheng need to have identification and undergo checks before they can enter.

They were soon led into a basement. The basement was damp, cold, and gloomy, with various torture instruments displayed on the walls and workbenches. Traces of black blood could even be seen seeping into the floor, and in the center, a prisoner sat slumped in an electric chair, his body covered in blood and gore.

Huang Taoguang from the intelligence department was furiously grabbing the prisoner's collar and shaking him incessantly when he saw Wei Liangbi arrive. Annoyed, he let go of his grip and shook his head at him.
