The group chatted as they drove, and the military vehicle stopped after more than an hour. The officer directed ten cadets to get off the vehicle.
After getting out of the car, Ning Zhiheng found it parked at the entrance of a large compound. The cadets were lined up neatly; two years of military academy training had instilled in them a military bearing in their every move.
The compound is very large, with a large playground and several office buildings.
The officer led everyone into an office building on the left, to a conference room, and asked them to wait. Then he turned to inform his superior.
Ning Zhiheng and his men didn't dare to say much. Soon after, two officers entered: a lieutenant colonel and a major.
"Attention!" Everyone stood at attention and saluted, respectfully welcoming their superior.
One of the lieutenant colonels waved and smiled as he addressed the group, saying, “First of all, welcome to all of you new colleagues. You may be unfamiliar with our unit. Within the party, our unit is called the Lixingshe (力行社), and its public name is the Second Division of the Investigation and Statistics Bureau of the National Military Council, also known as the Military Intelligence Division.”
This recruitment drive by the Military Intelligence Service is quite large, and many of your colleagues have already reported for duty. You are probably in the last batch.
I believe everyone is already familiar with the specific nature of the work, so I won't go into details.
We had already arranged the work assignments for everyone before you arrived.
The lieutenant colonel was a typical military officer, speaking crisply and decisively without any hesitation.
After speaking, the assignment list was announced, and the Military Intelligence Department was divided into eight sections. The Operations Section had the most personnel, with three operations groups and nine operations teams under its command. This Operations Section mainly conducted field operations, which were quite dangerous and resulted in many personnel losses. Most of the new recruits were sent to the Operations Section to supplement the personnel.
Of the ten people, including Ning Zhiheng and Wang Shucheng, six went to the Action Section. Lin Yifan went to the Intelligence Section, which was clearly arranged beforehand. How could a son of a high-ranking official be assigned to the most dangerous Action Section!
These six trainees were assigned to the Operations Division because of their outstanding performance in combat and shooting, since field missions require excellent skills.
Another student with a good memory, named Ruan Ming, was assigned to the telecommunications department. In short, everyone was assigned according to their strengths.
After the assignments were completed, someone led the trainees to their respective units to report for duty.
The major stepped forward and said to Ning Zhiheng and the other five, "I am Wei Liangbi, the leader of the first group of the Action Section. I've come here specifically to pick up the six of you. Now come with me!"
It turns out that because the team had the most personnel this time, the action department specially arranged for the team leader to come and pick them up personally, which shows that they were being treated with great importance.
After bringing everyone back to the operations section, Wei Liangbi assigned Ning Zhiheng and Wang Shucheng to his own operations team. The other four were taken away by the other two operations teams.
"Go and collect your uniforms and equipment first," Wei Liangbi instructed the two men. "Introduce them to your colleagues when you return."
The two men received their orders and went to the logistics department to collect their uniforms. Each of them received two brand-new second lieutenant uniforms, as well as matching Zhongshan civilian clothes. In other words, they were now both second lieutenants in the National Revolutionary Army.
There was also a Browning pistol, which was in very good condition. Ning Zhiheng held the grip and felt that the shape and weight of the gun were extremely comfortable to handle. He liked it very much.
I did use pistols during training at military school, but I used rifles and machine guns much more often. After all, pistols are practically useless on the battlefield.
Both men were tall and straight, dressed in military uniforms and carrying pistols, looking heroic and spirited.
Wang Shucheng was particularly fond of the military uniform and excitedly walked around, saying, "Zhiheng, it seems we didn't lose out this time. Judging from the style of the Military Intelligence Bureau, their rank must be quite high. I thought that if we didn't go to the front line, it would be uncertain whether we would be assigned a rank, but I didn't expect to be a second lieutenant."
"Of course not, we're graduates of military academy, we'll be given a second lieutenant there. Stop showing off like you've never seen anything like this before! It's not like this is your first time wearing a uniform!" Ning Zhiheng teased, feeling dizzy from being spun around.
"How can that be the same! Military academy students wear soldier uniforms, but now they wear proper junior officer uniforms. Look! How smart they look!" Wang Shucheng said with a smirk.
Ning Zhiheng, too lazy to watch him show off, dragged him back to the office, where Wei Liangbi was already waiting for them. Seeing their excited expressions, he smiled and said, "Come with me, I'll introduce you to my colleagues!"
Ning Zhiheng and Wang Shucheng's offices were spacious and located next to Wei Liangbi's. He explained, "Our group has a relatively large number of people, comprising three action teams, but we don't have many officers; including you, there are only about a dozen."
Each action team has one captain and three vice-captains. You will be assigned to the third action team as vice-captains.
Most of the team members are selected from the military; they are skilled soldiers with low ranks and therefore don't need offices. You will all work together here.
The office was large enough to fit four sets of desks and chairs. The other two officers were also present, and Wei Liangbi introduced them.
Captain Liang Deyou, in his early thirties, somewhat thin, with deep-set eyes, is the leader of the third action team.
Shi Hong, a tall, strong, and rugged young lieutenant officer. Deputy captain of the third action team.
Ning Zhiheng and Wang Shucheng quickly stood at attention and saluted. Shi Hong waved his hand and said, "From now on, we brothers will eat from the same pot. Don't bother with formalities. From now on, we'll call each other brothers. Call me Lao Shi or Brother Hong."
"Yes, Brother Hong!" Ning Zhiheng and Wang Shucheng quickly greeted him. Shi Hong laughed heartily, while Liang Deyou remained silent, only nodding with a smile. Ning Zhiheng thought to himself, "This man's temperament is somewhat similar to mine."
After everyone had greeted each other, Wei Liangbi said, "Old Liang, they'll be assigned to your team. They're all good lads, so please keep an eye on them and give them a briefing." He then turned to Ning Zhiheng and said, "Come to my office later!" Ning Zhiheng quickly agreed.
