Chapter Ninety-Five: Aftermath of the Incident

“This Zongpu is my eldest apprentice. He started learning to read prescriptions and dispense medicine from me when he was a teenager, and it’s been ten years! I’m all alone and have no children, so I treated him like my own child. I never imagined it would be him! Why is this happening to me!” Wu Quanjiang said sadly. At this moment, his heart was breaking. Being betrayed by the person closest to him was a fact that no one could accept for a moment!

Fang Boyi turned around to pour a glass of water, then handed it to Wu Quanjiang and said, "Old Wu, are you sure?"

Wu Quanjiang took the cup, but didn't want to drink it. Instead, he gently placed it on the table and said with a wry smile, "There's no mistake! The information in here is too comprehensive. If my subordinates betrayed me, even if they knew my identity, we don't usually have contact. We only meet once a year when dealing with situations. They wouldn't know such details about my business dealings and my business partners."

Look inside, they even know about my favorite lotus wine. Lao Fang, you know! For us underground workers, drinking too much is a big no-no. Everyone knows I don't drink a drop, and I always say it's because I have a bad stomach. Actually, I only secretly drink a cup of lotus wine from Liu's shop on South Street when I'm really craving it. It's only a few times a year, and it's a secret that only Zongpu knows. A few times, he even went to buy it for me secretly.

He's been with me since he was a child, and I see him as my successor. I take him with me when I do business, and he manages most of my public businesses now. He knows all my business partners very well.

Furthermore, he was very familiar with the staff in the Chinese medicine shop, and he remembered them in great detail in the records.

That's the most important point!

Wu Quanjiang pointed to a section of the document and continued, "My niece, Wu Ruyun, is listed there. You know me; we do underground work, and danger can strike at any time, so I haven't married all these years. This Wu Ruyun is actually Old Zhong's orphan. After Old Zhong sacrificed himself, he left behind this child, and I have been secretly raising her to adulthood. She is now studying at a girls' middle school."

I was afraid that if something happened to me, it would implicate her, so I always secretly sent the money to her and never contacted her in public. The child was very sensible and never mentioned me to anyone! So this matter was kept very secret!

Only a few times, when I was really unable to get away, did I ask Zongpu to deliver the money for me. Once, he asked me about my relationship with Ruyun, and I casually said that Ruyun was my niece! Actually, Ruyun's mother was my classmate, so she always called me uncle!

Therefore, only Zongpu knew about Ruyun's connection with me, and that's why he thought she was my niece!

After hearing Wu Quanjiang point out the suspicious points one by one, Fang Boyi finally realized that the mole must be Zong Pu.

"But how did Zongpu know your real identity? Did you, Lao Wu, violate organizational discipline by telling him?" Fang Boyi asked.

Even if Zongpu was Wu Quanjiang's closest confidant, it was still unacceptable for him to violate the discipline of the underground party organization and arbitrarily reveal his organizational identity!

Upon hearing Fang Boyi's question, Wu Quanjiang said somewhat awkwardly, "Zongpu is a kid I've always liked. I've long intended to recruit him into the Party organization, so I haven't kept some things from him too much these past two years. I was planning to give him some more time to develop before recruiting him! But he only suspects that I'm an underground Party member; he has no idea that I'm a member of the Nanjing Provincial Committee."

Fang Boyi didn't blame him after hearing his words. After all, a large part of the underground party's development to this point was due to this kind of mentorship system. It wasn't impossible for Wu Quanjiang to develop his most trusted person into a subordinate.

He picked up the documents again and looked at them once more. Suddenly, he asked, "The documents show that you were not under surveillance for long, about ten days ago. Think back to when Zongpu showed any unusual behavior ten days ago?"

Upon hearing this, Wu Quanjiang was stunned for a moment. After thinking about it carefully, he suddenly slapped his thigh and said in annoyance, "Fourteen days ago, there were some problems with the transportation of the batch of Yunnan Baiyao we purchased. I called a small meeting with several members of my work line!"

The situation was quite urgent at the time, so I took Zongpu directly to the meeting point. I arranged for Zongpu to stand guard outside. Could it be that he overheard our meeting?

"Oh no, Lao Fang, Zongpu absolutely cannot be allowed to stay! Those comrades are in danger too!"

Fang Boyi was also startled by these words. If that were the case, the comrades on the pharmaceutical production line would be in great danger! However, he was experienced and quickly calmed himself down. He waved his hand and said, "No, I don't see it that way. Look at this document, it says that it is judged that you may be an important member of the Nanjing Municipal Party Committee! If he heard the whole content of your meeting, then your identity would already be confirmed. He wouldn't use words like 'judge' or 'maybe'!"

I suspect he overheard part of your conversation, or perhaps not at all, and only judged your high position within the party based on the members' attitudes towards you!

Of course, we must consider the worst-case scenario in everything we do. All comrades on the pharmaceutical production line must immediately go into hiding. Once we capture Zongpu, we'll interrogate him thoroughly to see what he actually knows before determining our next steps! Where is Zongpu now?

Fang Boyi's extremely calm analysis relieved Wu Quanjiang. If his negligence had caused great losses to his colleagues on the pharmaceutical production line, he would regret it for the rest of his life, and even death could not atone for it!

“I arranged for Zongpu to go to Anqing to purchase goods yesterday, and he won’t be back until the day after tomorrow!” Wu Quanjiang replied.

"I'll send men to Anqing immediately to make the arrests. Write down the exact address where the goods were purchased! Also, your niece, Wu Ruyun, must be moved!" Fang Boyi added, "Write a note quickly, and I'll send someone with the note to pick her up right away!"
