Chapter Sixty-Five: The New Codebook

However, seeing Ning Zhiheng beside him, he said somewhat embarrassedly, "How about I keep it for you as a souvenir?"

Ning Zhiheng shook his head. He wasn't interested in this small pistol and felt that his Browning was more comfortable to use. In the past month, he had been going to the training ground to practice shooting whenever he had free time. He had fired countless bullets and his accuracy and feel for the gun were getting better and better. He would feel very uncomfortable if he changed his sidearm.

Seeing that Ning Zhiheng didn't like it, Wei Liangbi was just happy. He put the gun away and said in a good mood, "I was just being polite. I wouldn't really give it to you if I did!"

Ning Zhiheng smiled without saying a word. He walked to the desk and examined the items on it. He saw a stack of white papers on the table. After carefully unfolding them, he found that they were all blank pages. However, he could vaguely see a faint mark on the first white paper. With a thought, he took a document bag from the team member next to him and carefully put the papers inside.

After searching the table, he suddenly felt something strange under his feet while looking around. He moved his feet away, bent down, and gently felt around with his hands. He finally noticed that there was a large gap between a wooden board and the other wooden boards, and there were marks on the edge where a sharp object had pried it open.

He pulled a dagger from his calf. This dagger was his personal defensive weapon. Ever since he saw the wonderful dagger duel between Huang Xiansheng and Sun Jiacheng, he had become fond of this weapon and prepared one for himself in case of emergency!

He gently pried open the wooden board and set it aside, revealing the box inside. Ning Zhiheng was immediately delighted; the shape resembled a radio.

Speaking of which, a radio was seized when they arrested Yuki Yanagida, but they didn't find the codebook at the time. I wonder if they'll have a big find this time.

He took the box out and placed it on the table. He turned around and shouted to Wei Liangbi, who was searching the next room, "Team leader, we've found something here!"

Upon hearing Ning Zhiheng's call, Wei Liangbi immediately entered the bedroom and his eyes lit up when he saw the box on the table: "Quickly open it and take a look!"

Ning Zhiheng lifted the lid of the box, and inside was a radio, the kind of radio commonly used by Japanese spies. It was small in size, powerful, and had stable voltage, making it the most advanced small radio at the time.

Wei Liangbi quickly reached into the box and took the radio out. "Quickly check if there's a codebook inside!"

“Yes, there’s a booklet underneath!” Ning Zhiheng had sharp eyes. The moment the radio was taken out, he noticed a small booklet underneath and quickly took it out and handed it to Wei Liangbi.

Wei Liangbi put down the radio, took the booklet, took a deep breath, gently opened it, and a joyful smile immediately appeared on his face. He then flipped through a few more pages and finally made up his mind.

He waved the booklet in his hand and said excitedly to Ning Zhiheng, "Zhiheng, we've really struck gold this time! A high-level encrypted codebook of Japanese spies!"

"You know what? This little codebook alone is enough to propel us brothers to great heights, more valuable than catching ten Japanese spies!"

Seeing Wei Liangbi's excitement, Ning Zhiheng was also pleased. However, he felt that Wei Liangbi was exaggerating. As far as he knew, each intelligence group of Japanese spies used different encryption formulas, so their codebooks were all different. Even if this codebook were found, it would only be of great use in capturing the Shadow Group. It didn't seem as valuable as Wei Liangbi claimed.

Wei Liangbi was exceptionally astute and actually saw through Ning Zhiheng's thoughts. He chuckled and said in a low voice, "In short, we've done a great service this time! I'll tell you all about it when we get back."

Wei Liangbi had been in the military intelligence department for a long time and was much better informed than I was; he must know some things that I didn't.

Now that he was surrounded by action team members, there were some things that were inconvenient to say openly. Ning Zhiheng nodded and remained silent.

The search was thorough, but nothing much was found afterward, except for a small amount of money, namely some legal tender and two gold bars.

Ning Zhiheng knew that since Xie Ziming owned a radio station, he must be Yanagida Yuki's successor.

As the new leader of the Shadow Squad, he must have operating funds on him. It's unlikely he only has this much money, but since it hasn't been found in this house, it must be stored somewhere else.

He believed that the subsequent interrogation would be the same as the interrogation of Huang Xiansheng. No one could withstand those brutal tortures, and he would get what he wanted. He wasn't in a hurry!

After the search was completed, Ning Zhiheng left six team members behind to continue monitoring the area and see if there were any further discoveries.

Although Ning Zhiheng also felt that the chances of doing so were slim, his principle was to be careful to avoid big mistakes and to be extremely cautious!

The entire team returned to the Military Intelligence Department. In Wei Liangbi's car, he explained the situation to Ning Zhiheng.

The original purpose of establishing the Military Intelligence Bureau was primarily because the Chinese had suffered greatly on the intelligence front. The increasingly serious leaks and errors by the military infuriated the principal.

In the years that followed, cracking down on the rampant activities of Japanese spies became the main task of the Military Intelligence Service.

The most important issue was the serious leakage of intelligence. Their own telegrams were repeatedly deciphered by the Japanese. However, when faced with the Japanese's encrypted telegrams, the Telecommunications Department was completely helpless, as if reading a book written in heaven.

Just last year, the Military Intelligence Service made great efforts to select the best mathematicians from across the country to form a special decryption team to decipher Japanese military intelligence telegrams.

However, the results were not obvious. One of the main reasons was the lack of real original data, mainly comparative analysis materials. In other words, we need to seize more codebooks from Japanese spies, conduct comparative analysis, find the patterns, and crack them in a targeted manner. Otherwise, it would be like looking for a needle in a haystack, with absolutely no clue!
