Chapter Thirty-Six: An Unexpected Joy

Deputy Director Huang's office was located in the headquarters building of the Military Intelligence Department. This was Ning Zhiheng's first time visiting the headquarters building of the Military Intelligence Department.

The military intelligence agency has grown increasingly large, with more and more personnel, and its departments have now increased to ten. And it's said that they will continue to expand.

The office building was crowded, but everyone moved about quietly. They nodded to each other as they passed, without making a sound, creating a remarkably peaceful atmosphere.

Following Wei Liangbi to an office, after knocking on the door, a secretary in her thirties opened the door.

"Team Leader Wei is here. The section chief is waiting for you. Please!" After saying this, he stepped aside and gestured for them to enter.

"Thank you for your trouble, Secretary Yu!" Wei Liangbi replied politely, not daring to be negligent in the slightest.

This Secretary Yu was Deputy Director Huang's confidant, and he was never out of Huang's sight. He always maintained a respectful attitude towards Wei Liangbi.

Deputy Director Huang's office is very large, divided into two rooms. Secretary Yu works in the outer office, while the inner office is Deputy Director Huang's private office.

I knocked lightly on the door and only went in after receiving a response from Deputy Director Huang.

At this moment, Ning Zhiheng looked at the person in the room. A man who looked to be in his forties, with a kind and amiable face, was sitting behind the desk. He didn't stand up, so his height was not known, but he was slightly overweight and had a smile on his face. Even though he was wearing a military uniform, he did not show any majesty. Instead, he looked quite like Maitreya Buddha.

"Chief, I've brought Zhiheng with me!" Wei Liangbi bowed slightly and gave a respectful salute.

Ning Zhiheng also stood at attention and saluted: "Your subordinate Ning Zhiheng is here to report!"

"Haha, Zhiheng, great, great! I was just thinking of getting together with you young people these next few days, and you've given me such a wonderful surprise!" Huang Xianzheng greeted him warmly with a beaming smile, saying "great" twice in a row, clearly very happy!

Hwang Hyun-jung was in a really good mood today, even though his position in the military intelligence department was somewhat delicate.

Having graduated from the Baoding Military Academy, he did not choose to stay in the army. To be honest, this went against his original intention when he enlisted. However, after witnessing the life and death separations of his comrades, he began to tire of this kind of life.

By a twist of fate, he switched careers and joined the military intelligence department, becoming a feared spy.

However, with the backing of the Baoding faction, coupled with his shrewd and skillful interpersonal relationships, his time in the military intelligence department was relatively smooth.

Unwittingly, after several years of low-key management, its strength within the Military Intelligence Bureau gradually increased. This eventually attracted the attention of those with ulterior motives, and signs of suppression began to emerge.

During this period, the director has intentionally or unintentionally arranged many things to avoid me.

Just as they were thinking about how to get out of this situation, Wei Liangbi's report presented them with an excellent opportunity.

Two years ago, the Kong Liangce leak case caused the Director to lose face, and the relationship between him and the military elders became very tense.

Without the leader's insistence on investigation and clear statement, it's hard to imagine how things would have ended. However, the section chief also established an image of being completely obedient to the leader, cold-blooded and ruthless, which can be said to have been more beneficial than harmful.

But unexpectedly, such a big case turned out to be a miscarriage of justice, which is truly astonishing.

He repeatedly reviewed the interrogation records in his hands, verifying the details of the testimonies regarding this case, and he could conclude that it was true.

It's important to understand that many details of the scene were not made public at the time due to the needs of the investigation. Only those who experienced it firsthand could accurately recount the events.

When he arrived at the wardens' office and placed the interrogation record on the wardens' desk, he knew he had done a huge favor!

The magistrate's reaction was predictable: from surprise and doubt to rage, then calmness and amiability, all were clearly displayed before him. He made no attempt to avoid him.

Perhaps he was genuinely angry, or perhaps he was a master of acting—it doesn't matter! What matters is that the relationship between the two has completely eased.

Without any obstruction or threats, the subtle hostility vanished. He demonstrated his sincerity through his actions, and the Director reciprocated with equal goodwill.

He proactively suggested that Deputy Director Huang should make greater contributions to the Military Intelligence Department in future collaborations.

They also agreed to the proposal made by Deputy Director Huang some time ago to promote a lieutenant colonel to the rank of officer and to the position of head of the equipment section.

Of course, this was Deputy Director Huang's old subordinate, a member of the Huangpu-Baoding clique. His promotion had been suppressed for a long time, and the director had not given any indication of it.

The exchange of benefits was completed in a cordial atmosphere. The action team, lacking experience, was ill-equipped to handle such a significant case. Deputy Director Huang proactively suggested transferring it to the intelligence section.

As the director's trusted department, the intelligence section has always been an impenetrable fortress. The meaning of transferring it to the intelligence section is self-evident.

Everything dissipated, leaving behind a peaceful atmosphere. Stepping out of the director's office, Deputy Director Huang, having received his superior's goodwill and gained more influence, must have felt quite emotional.

He immediately notified Wei Liangbi to summon his old comrade-in-arms's prized disciple, Ning Zhiheng, a rising star in the Baoding clique.

“Liangbi, Zhiheng, your teacher and I were classmates, comrades-in-arms, and even brothers-in-arms, friends through thick and thin!” Huang Xianzheng smiled broadly, his tone revealing a sense of nostalgia for the past. “It all seems like yesterday, when we were young, spirited, and fearless!”

"My teacher often talked about you. Back then, you led a company to cover the rear of the main force, holding off an enemy regiment for a whole day and night. In the end, you were pulled out of the pile of corpses by the reinforcements. They said you were a brave general and a lucky general!" Ning Zhiheng's face was full of admiration, and his expression was sincere and to the point.
