As evening approached, Ning Zhiheng didn't cook. Since he lived alone, there was really no need for him to cook.
He went out and had dinner at a small restaurant nearby, then rushed home to wait for news from Liu Datong.
Around 7 p.m., Liu Datong rushed over.
"How's the investigation going?"
Seeing Liu Datong's travel-worn appearance, one knew that he must have wasted no time and come to report as quickly as possible.
Ning Zhiheng nodded inwardly, it seemed he had made the right choice in recruiting this subordinate.
“Everything has been investigated! Commander Ning, there are just some things I can’t explain to myself, and I brought two brothers with me. I wonder if you could see them?” Liu Datong asked cautiously.
After returning home at noon, I gathered the brothers I knew well and explained everything to them.
A stack of banknotes was slammed onto the table, and everyone immediately became excited. Big Head had found a powerful backer, which meant things would be much easier for the brothers.
Everyone used all their skills to finally get the job done, and then rushed over to report the results.
I just don't know if Commander Ning would be willing to meet his brothers. If he is, that would be great, as it would show that Commander Ning has no prejudice against these street thugs.
It will be more comfortable to get along with him in the future. If he is not willing, then he should pay more attention to his behavior in the future and not make Commander Ning unhappy, otherwise he would be too ignorant!
Ning Zhiheng knew that it would be very difficult for Liu Datong to investigate the matter thoroughly in such a short time.
He had originally planned to meet with the brothers working under Liu Datong to get to know them better, as this would be essential for him to better control this force in the future.
"Is this your idea? Or did they request to see me?" Ning Zhiheng asked.
"It was my idea! Among my group of brothers, those two are more adept at this kind of thing and know more about the situation than I do. I was afraid of delaying your business, so I wanted to bring them along to report in person," Liu Datong explained.
This was the first task Ning Zhiheng had assigned him, and it was a major case involving catching Japanese spies. He couldn't afford to make any mistakes.
Where are they now?
"Wait at the alley entrance, what do you say?"
“I’ve brought them all, so what’s there to say? Bring them to see me,” Ning Zhiheng said with a smile.
This Liu Datou is truly shrewd and considerate; he thinks things through carefully and is a sensible fellow.
However, such people are easy to use; they take care of many things without you having to ask.
Liu Datong turned and went out, and soon brought in two men.
Pointing to the tall, thin young man with delicate features, he introduced him, "This is Chen Yanqing, also our police station's household registration officer."
He then pointed to the unremarkable man, the kind you'd easily lose on the street, and said, "This is Liu Yong, my childhood friend. Nothing, big or small, stays hidden from him."
The two men said in unison, "Greetings, Commander Ning!"
The difference was that Chen Yanqing's posture of standing at attention and saluting was very standard, after all, he was a policeman.
But Liu Yong bowed deeply, which made Ning Zhiheng frown. This kid was cunning and slippery.
"Yeah! Big Head already told me. You guys worked hard today. Once the case is solved, I won't treat you unfairly." Ning Zhiheng gave a brief verbal reward and then asked directly, "Now, explain the situation."
Chen Yanqing stepped forward and respectfully placed several sheets of record paper on the table: "This is the information we have compiled. Commander Ning, please take a look first, and then I will add to it."
Ning Zhiheng's eyes lit up; there was even a written report.
This was truly unexpected for him; he hadn't anticipated that his subordinates were so talented!
He reached for the report, his tone noticeably more amiable: "Did you compile this?"
Chen Yanqing quickly replied, "Yes, I was afraid that I might have overlooked some details, so I simply categorized and recorded the information of these nine households."
"How many years of schooling have you received?" Ning Zhiheng continued to ask.
These days, there are very few educated people, and even fewer who are literate and capable of handling affairs.
“I went to school for five years, but then my father passed away unexpectedly, and my family couldn’t afford to support me anymore, so I dropped out of school,” Chen Yanqing replied with a bitter expression.
"What a pity! But studying doesn't necessarily have to be done on campus. You should read more books and newspapers on a regular basis to broaden your horizons. You can learn a lot that way, even more than you would in school." Ning Zhiheng spoke to him with the air of someone who had been there all along, completely forgetting that he himself was just a student who had just graduated from military academy.
"Thank you for your guidance, Commander Ning. Yanqing will always remember it!"
Not being able to continue his studies had always been a regret for Chen Yanqing. He could clearly feel that Ning Zhiheng's encouragement was sincere, and a sense of gratitude welled up in his heart.
Ning Zhiheng nodded, gesturing for the three to sit down, and then looked through the notes in his hand.
The contents are very detailed, with the records listing the family situation of each household, the number of people in the family, their living and working conditions, family background, and so on.
He even listed the health conditions of everyone in his family. It could be said that everything Ning Zhiheng could think of had been listed in detail.
"As expected of someone from the police department, even our military intelligence division couldn't have pulled this off!" Ning Zhiheng slapped the table and laughed. "Big Head, you guys did a great job!"
"Sir, you flatter me. These are just small-scale operations, nothing to brag about. Please excuse our poor work!"
Seeing that Ning Zhiheng was very satisfied, Liu Datong finally felt relieved. It seemed that he had successfully completed the first task assigned to him by Commander Ning.
