Chapter Sixty-Five: The New Codebook

Simply put, it's like a math problem.

Find the pattern!

Given several number arrangements, you are asked to find the pattern and form a formula. With this formula, you can reconstruct any of the myriad variations of numbers!

The slow progress of the decryption work has been a major headache for the senior military intelligence officers. In recent years, the number of Japanese spies cracked and arrested has been small, and most of them were insignificant figures.

Japan's intelligence organization is highly sophisticated, responsive, and extremely secretive. Each time, it easily evades the military intelligence department's in-depth investigations without suffering any serious damage! In the past few years, the number of radios captured has been countable on one hand, let alone encrypted codebooks.

So far, the only codebook seized in an operation in Wuhan at the end of last year has been considered a treasure by the decryption team.

The high command of the military intelligence department heavily rewarded those who made meritorious contributions in that operation. The intelligence team leader and deputy team leader of the Wuhan station were quickly promoted one rank and reported to the military headquarters to be awarded the Third Class Yunhui Medal.

Other personnel who performed meritorious service were commended and subsequently received promotions and material rewards to varying degrees!

The magnitude and scope of the reward are extremely rare in the history of the military intelligence service, demonstrating the importance that the higher-ups attach to this matter.

Ning Zhiheng then realized that this operation had been incredibly successful. The primary purpose of this encrypted codebook wasn't to crack the Shadow Intelligence Group, but rather to provide the Military Intelligence Bureau's decryption team with extremely important analytical basis and data. If this work made significant progress and breakthroughs, it would have a major impact on the balance of power between China and Japan, meaning that the Chinese military would have gained an extra pair of eyes and could now also spy on Japan's military secrets! Its significance was immense!

Upon returning to the Military Intelligence Department, Wei Liangbi immediately took the radio and codebook to his direct superior, Zhao Ziliang, the head of the Operations Section, to report on the case.

This matter is too big; Wei Liangbi must report it. There are some things that are no longer appropriate for him and Ning Zhiheng to do.

He instructed Ning Zhiheng that Xie Ziming was an important criminal and must be immediately transferred to the Criminal Training Section for interrogation to quickly extract useful information from him.

Ning Zhiheng took Xie Ziming to the interrogation department, his fourth visit there. He quickly completed the handover procedures and immediately began the interrogation.

Coincidentally, this time the interrogation was conducted by Jiang Wende and Zhang Ping, the same pair.

Jiang Wende was also surprised to see Ning Zhiheng again. He spread his hands and said with a wry smile, "I didn't expect it to be Captain Ning again. You've become a regular at our interrogation department lately. In just over a month, less than two months, this is the third criminal you've arrested. Captain Ning, you're a young hero, your methods are impressive!"

Ning Zhiheng could only smile faintly and say, "It seems that Captain Jiang and I are destined to meet. I hope we can cooperate sincerely this time and all will be happy."

After exchanging pleasantries, the two stopped talking. Soon, interrogators came forward and tightly bound Xie Ziming to the cross.

The large cross, soaked in blood for a long time, has turned the wood black, and a strong smell of blood will hit you as soon as you get close.

As usual, Ning Zhiheng spoke first. He didn't waste any words, walked up to Xie Ziming, grabbed his chin, and lifted him up hard, causing Xie Ziming's head to slam heavily against the wooden frame, making him groan in pain.

Ning Zhiheng asked directly, "Mr. Xie, I don't want to waste time with nonsense. You know very well why we arrested you. We found a radio and a codebook in your residence."

Your identity cannot be denied!

Now, I'm asking you!

"Will you confess honestly? Or should I have you try out all the torture instruments in this room before you confess? You're a smart man, I don't need to say more."

Xie Ziming did not answer his question, but instead gave him a contemptuous look. By this time, he had recovered from his initial panic and his mind was gradually calming down.

The situation has deteriorated to this extent. It's bad enough that the radio station was discovered, but what's even more alarming is that the newly replaced encrypted codebook was also found.

Because of the windmill's loss of contact, the Special Higher Police headquarters immediately abandoned the old codebook and adopted a new one, handing it over to him, the new leader of the Shadow Group. Unexpectedly, the codebook was seized by Chinese intelligence shortly after being brought to Nanjing and making its first contact with headquarters. He knew all too well how serious the consequences of the codebook's leak would be, and he deeply regretted the severe repercussions of his negligence!

He still doesn't understand where the problem lies, because the Shadow Group was only recently restarted, and he hasn't even started any operations yet.

At that moment, the words of his senior, Kenta Kawakami, echoed in his mind!

"They are progressing so fast that it's hard for us to keep up!"

It seems that Kawakami's words have come true. He is unable to adapt to the progress of the Chinese people, and the price he has paid has made him regretful!
