Chapter 251 Before Going Home (Part 4)

Ning Zhiheng was writing furiously in his office, finally finishing the case summary. He put down his pen, put the summary in his document bag, stood up, and stretched.

Just then, the telephone on his desk rang. He picked it up and found it was his supervisor's personal secretary calling.

"Team Leader Ning, this is Secretary Liu. The Director wants you to come to his office immediately," Secretary Liu said on the other end of the phone.

"Okay, Secretary Liu, I'll be there right away," Ning Zhiheng replied.

Ning Zhiheng put down the phone, feeling a little strange. This was the first time the director had called him directly since he joined the Military Intelligence Investigation Department. It must be something important. He didn't dare to delay for a moment and hurriedly went out the door, walking quickly towards the director's office in the central office building.

When he arrived at the office door, Secretary Liu was already waiting for him.

"Secretary Liu, thank you for waiting. Is the Director here now?" Ning Zhiheng quickly stepped forward and asked softly.

"Team Leader Ning, the Director is waiting for you inside. Please come in," Secretary Liu said with a smile, turning around and gesturing for him to enter.

As the section chief's personal secretary, he naturally knew that the section chief valued Ning Zhiheng highly, and he was extremely polite to Ning Zhiheng as well.

Ning Zhiheng entered the director's office and was somewhat surprised to see that, in addition to the director, Bian Ze, the deputy head of the intelligence section, was also there.

Because he had heard Zhao Ziliang say that Bian Ze, the deputy head of the intelligence section, was actually the director's most trusted confidant, and that many of the director's affairs were handled by Bian Ze.

For some time now, Gu Zhengqi, the head of the intelligence section, has been under immense pressure from the director, but Bian Ze, the deputy head, has not shown up. This has been a mystery to Ning Zhiheng. Now he thinks that Bian Ze must be dealing with some secret matters. He wonders what brings Bian Ze here today, and whether it is related to the director's summons.

"Reporting to the Chief, Ning Zhiheng is here to report for duty," Ning Zhiheng said loudly, standing at attention.

When the section chief saw Ning Zhiheng enter, a smile immediately appeared on his face. He waved his hand, gesturing for Ning Zhiheng to sit down.

Then he spoke up, "Zhiheng, I just heard Ziliang say that you're going back to your hometown of Hangzhou tomorrow?"

Ning Zhiheng hadn't expected his superior to be so well-informed, knowing so quickly that he was going back to his hometown.

He quickly nodded and said, "Reporting to the Chief, yes, that's right. I'm really worried about the Japanese investigation team this time. As you know, my family is in Hangzhou, and I'm afraid of implicating them, so I want to send them to Chongqing for resettlement."

Ning Zhiheng felt there was nothing to hide, so he told the truth, believing that the director would not question it.

Upon hearing this, the director nodded repeatedly. On the contrary, he felt that it was very necessary for Ning Zhiheng to do so.

He nodded and smiled, saying, "Your current position is different, and sooner or later you will attract the attention of Japanese spy organizations. The situation in Hangzhou is also quite special, as the Japanese intelligence forces there are quite strong. We must take precautions!"

At this point, he changed the subject and asked, "Zhiheng, you're from Hangzhou. Are you familiar with the Japanese Consulate in Hangzhou?"

Ning Zhiheng quickly replied, "I grew up in Hangzhou and am quite familiar with the area. The Japanese consulate in Hangzhou was a stone pagoda built on Baoshi Mountain in West Lake. However, that area was under Japanese jurisdiction, and I had only seen it from afar."

The Japanese consulate in Hangzhou has a long history. In 1896, when Hangzhou opened as a treaty port, Japan established a concession and a consulate in Hangzhou in accordance with the Treaty of Shimonoseki.

Therefore, Hangzhou is not like Nanjing. The Japanese have considerable power in Hangzhou, which is why Ning Zhiheng is so worried about the safety of his family. Because the Japanese influence is so close, if they really wanted to harm his family, Ning Zhiheng would have no way to protect them.

“That’s good,” the director said with a smile, picking up a photo from his desk. “Since you’re back in Hangzhou to handle your family matters, I happen to have a task for you.”

At this point, he pushed the photo forward, and Ning Zhiheng quickly stepped forward, took the photo in his hand, and examined it carefully.

The photo shows a fifty-year-old man, not tall, slightly overweight, with a slight smile on his face in profile.

Ning Zhiheng then noticed a line of text written on the back of the photo, which read, "Kawamoto Kuraji, 52 years old, head of the Shanghai Special Higher Police Section, Japan."

Bian Ze, who was standing to the side, said, "This is Kawamoto Kuraji, the former head of the Shanghai Special Higher Police Section of Japan. In the past few years, he has been the main adversary of our military intelligence investigation department. He is cunning, ruthless, and full of tricks."

Many of our excellent agents have died at his hands, leaving behind a trail of bloodshed. He has been our target for assassination many times, but unfortunately, we have failed each time, and instead lost the lives of many of our comrades. My operation in Shanghai two years ago failed because of him. The senior agent Snow Wolf that you killed was his right-hand man.

For the past two years, I have been planning to assassinate him, but because Shanghai is the headquarters of Japanese spies and is very powerful, we have failed in every operation.

Unexpectedly, he resigned two months ago due to the setback in Nanjing, leaving Shanghai to be transferred to the Japanese Consulate in Hangzhou as a consular counselor. The Japanese spies in Hangzhou were far less capable than those in Shanghai; this was a golden opportunity.”

Ning Zhiheng then realized that he had been summoned today to carry out an assassination mission to eliminate this high-ranking Japanese agent.

But why should I be assigned this task? Shouldn't this kind of thing be handled by the Hangzhou Military Intelligence Station?
