Chapter 1096 Reunion of Old Friends

Guan Chengyi is an old man in Shen Le's faction. He has suffered a lot with Shen Le and his sharpness has long been dulled. If it weren't for Shen Le's summons, he would never have risked his life to infiltrate behind enemy lines with him. Now he only wants to survive this protracted war safely and has no desire to win.

Shen Le was aware of the current situation. The Central Bureau of Investigation and Statistics (CBIS) had suffered repeated blows, and in his own Suzhou-Shanghai district, there was a serious fear of the enemy among everyone, including his old subordinates.

However, he couldn't say much. Half a year ago, he was reappointed as the head of the Su-Hu District. He didn't have any capable people under his command. Although these old subordinates knew that the future was dangerous, they still rushed to serve him and went undercover behind enemy lines with him when he summoned them. This was already very rare. He couldn't ask for anything more.

Shen Le nodded slightly and said softly, "I'll think about it some more. By the way, go to East Street tomorrow and buy that house we had our eye on before. It will be my backup place to stay. I'll move the radio there tomorrow night."

Guan Chengyi nodded and said, "Okay, I'll go first thing tomorrow morning. The houses aren't expensive these days, so there shouldn't be any problems."

The population of Nanjing is now almost half that before the war, so housing is naturally cheaper, and finding a safe house is not difficult.

After Shen Le and Guan Chengyi finished their discussion, they stood up and, with Guan Chengyi seeing them off, quietly left through the back door.

The two guards who had been keeping watch near the back gate saw him appear and quickly followed him at a distance. The three of them walked briskly for two blocks and arrived at the gate of a secluded courtyard. He looked back and then nodded slightly. The two guards understood and then turned and left.

The courtyard was small and secluded, not suitable for many people to hide in, so only Shen Le stayed here temporarily. The guards only accompanied him when he went out, and usually hid nearby, but did not provide close protection.

Shen Le is cautious in his actions. He never stays at one place for long and changes his location every now and then. This habit has allowed him to evade the investigation of the Twenty-One several times, and he has always managed to escape danger without incident.

He took out his key, opened the gate, carefully examined the markings he had made, nodded slightly, then took a few steps forward, pushed open the door, and closed it tightly behind him.

It was already late, and all around was dark. He pulled a light cord next to the door frame, and the light bulb hanging in the center of the room turned on, its yellowish light illuminating the room.

He was exhausted after a busy day. He walked heavily to the table against the wall, picked up the thermos, and prepared to pour himself a glass of water. But as soon as he focused his eyes, he realized something was wrong.

He was a veteran agent of the Central Bureau of Investigation and Statistics (CBIS), and had developed his own unique set of experiences over the years. He had a specific way of arranging every item in his residence. For example, the handles of thermos bottles and teacups would be deliberately pointed towards the door, and the distance between tables and chairs was always a foot's width. In short, if anything was not right, it meant that an intruder had entered the room.

Shen Le's heart skipped a beat, and he immediately stopped. He turned around and took a step forward to lean against the wall, keeping his back against it to prevent anyone from suddenly attacking him from both sides. He then reached under the table next to him.

Although he was an intelligence agent, he had long held a high position and was always protected when he went out. Moreover, in certain situations, not having a gun was actually safer than carrying one. Therefore, he did not have the habit of carrying weapons. Instead, he often kept guns at home or in secluded places for emergencies.

But when he reached under the table, he found nothing; the pistol he had hidden there was gone.

Shen Le's forehead immediately broke out in a cold sweat. He had a bad feeling in his heart. Someone had actually sneaked into his residence and taken the weapon he had hidden in the shadows. The person who was able to get under his nose without making a sound must be a master.

Just as he was about to move again, a voice suddenly came from the corner of the room: "Director, you are still as vigorous as ever, and your alertness is as sharp as ever!"
