Chapter Twenty-Five: Getting Closer

"What about the rickshaw driver?" Ning Zhiheng pressed, wanting to know more details in person to be at ease.

“I brought it; it’s inside.”

The two entered the restaurant and saw Liu Yong still sitting at a table with two men dressed in coarse clothes and short jackets, waiting.

There were a few side dishes and a steamer of buns on the table. The two men had bronze complexions, which showed that they were laborers who had been exposed to the sun for many years.

The two of them were wolfing down the food on the table. They usually earned only a few copper coins, barely enough to feed their family, and had never eaten out before. They were truly enjoying this delicious meal today, thanks to the blessing of the God of Wealth.

When Liu Yong saw Ning Zhiheng and the other man enter, he quickly told them to shut up.

Both of them tactfully put down their bowls and chopsticks and stood up with Liu Yong.

Walking up to them, Ning Zhiheng waved for the three to sit down and said in a friendly tone, "No need to be polite, please continue. You can only do your work well if you're full."

The two drivers, who had been somewhat uneasy, relaxed when they saw Ning Zhiheng's kind and approachable demeanor.

But no one dared to eat anymore; they all sat nervously on their stools, waiting for Ning Zhiheng's questions.

Ning Zhiheng saw that they really didn't dare to eat, so he didn't force them.

He asked, "Who recognized the person in the photo?"

"Me, me!" they both replied.

Liu Datong frowned and shouted, "Speak properly, Lao Wei, you go first!"

The older-looking driver nodded with a forced smile and began to explain the situation.

It turns out that this Old Wei lives on Beihua Street and specializes in recruiting people on this street.

After Liu Datong explained the mission, his men searched everywhere, focusing on rickshaw pullers who picked up passengers on Beihua Street.

Old Wei has a good memory. He originally thought it was better to avoid trouble and wanted to say he didn't know.

But when Liu Datong waved a stack of banknotes in front of him, he immediately said that he knew Wang Yunfeng.

It turns out that he had driven Wang Yunfeng twice before, each time getting on the bus from Beihua Street to Yanshan Street in the north of the city.

"Yanshan Street!" Ning Zhiheng murmured. It's not close at all. More importantly, Yanshan Street is the most densely populated area, with at least 20,000 to 30,000 people. It's not easy to find!

Liu Datong stepped forward with a smug look on his face, pointed to another driver, and said, "Commander Ning, you haven't asked about this fellow yet?"

Ning Zhiheng looked at Liu Datong with a question in his eyes, and Liu Datong continued, "We found Lao Wei in the morning, and then spent the whole afternoon looking for him in Yanshan Street. It took some time because it wasn't in our jurisdiction, but we still found the guy."

It turned out that Liu Datong and his group were also shrewd. They led Lao Wei to Yanshan Street, the place where Wang Yunfeng got off the bus, and then continued to look for rickshaw drivers nearby.

Thinking that Wang Yunfeng came back by rickshaw, he might also take a rickshaw to Beihua Street.

Finally, after receiving a large reward, they found the driver named Chun San. He said he had seen someone who looked very much like the person in the photo.

"You didn't pull this person over?" Ning Zhiheng asked with some doubt, then continued, "Just because he looks like him?"

"Sir, I wouldn't dare lie to you. He was right next to me. I asked him if he needed a car, but he ignored me and left." Chun San saw that Ning Zhiheng didn't quite believe him and was afraid that the reward money he was about to get would slip away, so he made a solemn promise.

"I remember it very clearly. This person was carrying a bag of pastries and eating them as he walked. They looked so tempting." Chun San said with a touch of sadness, "My daughter Er Ya has always wanted to try these pastries, but I haven't had the money to buy them. I was thinking that when I had some spare money, I would definitely buy her some to try. That's why I have such a deep impression of them!"

Ning Zhiheng suddenly remembered something. When he asked his landlord Liu Molin, Liu had mentioned that Wang Yunfeng had once brought him a gift, which was pastries.

"Do you remember when this happened?" Ning Zhi asked.

“That was three days ago, right at the entrance of Zhangma Lane on Yanshan Street,” Chun San replied.

Wang Yunfeng gave Liu Molin a gift many days ago, while Chun San saw Wang Yunfeng eating snacks three days ago, a long time interval.

This suggests that Wang Yunfeng likely enjoys sweets and pastries frequently. He often buys them casually for personal consumption and as gifts.

If he has such a hobby, he will definitely go to the pastry shop often to buy pastries. In this way, the owner or the staff of the pastry shop are likely to know him, and at the very least, they can provide some information.

Moreover, now that he can prioritize accessing the household registration files of Yanshan Street, the scope is getting smaller and smaller. Ning Zhiheng has a premonition that he is getting closer and closer to this mole!
