Chapter 504 Master and Disciple Turn Against Each Other

Pei Tai left the office, turned around and warned his men guarding the door to be careful. He then went to Deng Yuankai's office door, looked around to make sure no one was there, and then knocked on the door.

"Come in!"

Pei Tai pushed open the door and entered, looking at Deng Yuankai who was resting in a chair, and said with a smile, "Brother Deng, you came here all by yourself to find some peace and quiet, leaving me to guard this place by myself!"

When Deng Yuankai saw Pei Tai come in, he asked in surprise, "Why did you come here too? Who's guarding the section chief's place?"

Pei Tai waved his hand dismissively and said, "We have a bunch of brothers guarding the area, nothing will happen. I came here to have a chat with you!"

"So you have some free time today?" Deng Yuankai looked at Pei Tai and said with a smile.

He stood up, sat down on the sofa, and gestured for Pei Tai to sit down opposite him.

Pei Tai smiled faintly, his hand instinctively reaching for his robe, but then he remembered that Cui Guangqi had taken his wine flask, so he had to pull his hand back. He hesitated for a moment before finally speaking, "Actually, it's nothing much, just some feelings about the past. Brother Deng, you know, I've been following the captain since I was a teenager. I have no family, so I treat him like an older brother, and he treats me like a younger brother. Although he confessed all the brothers this time, you know what the Japanese interrogation room is like. In a life-or-death situation, no one can be blamed, so I don't blame him!"

"Why are you telling me all this?" Deng Yuankai asked, somewhat puzzled. He sensed something was amiss; Pei Tai seemed to be implying something.

"Brother Deng, you're like an older brother to me. Back when the captain put you under his wing, you taught me so much..."

"Xiao Tai, you're a natural-born spy. You learn everything so quickly!" Deng Yuankai waved his hand, his eyes fixed on Pei Tai. "Just say what you want to say!"

The conversation inside the room quickly reached a stalemate. Pei Tai hesitated for a moment, feeling that he should make things clear today, as he didn't want the two of them to end up fighting each other.

"You want to be Qi Jingwu!"

Upon hearing this, Deng Yuankai felt a jolt of fear. His hand instinctively reached for his waist, but Pei Tai's hand was faster, and the muzzle of a pistol was already pointed at his chest.

"Brother Deng, don't move. I'm afraid the gun will go off accidentally. Put your hands up." Pei Tai relaxed slightly after seeing Deng Yuankai slowly raise his hands.

“Brother Deng, I also served the Party and the country. I know what you're thinking. You're unwilling to be a traitor. You have family over there, and you can't let them go. I know all that…”

"What nonsense are you talking about?" Deng Yuankai said coldly, looking at the gun barrel pressed against his chest.

"When you came back from the shooting scene the day before yesterday, I felt something was off. The director noticed it too and asked me to investigate. Your subordinates said you talked to that fortune teller for a long time and then seemed distracted. Who is that fortune teller? Was he from the anti-traitor squad from headquarters?" Pei Tai asked calmly.

"I don't know what you're talking about. I was just bored at the time, so I asked a fortune teller who was passing by to tell my fortune. That fortune teller was indeed very skilled and his predictions were very accurate. I was just feeling sad and that's why I lost my composure. I'm definitely not some kind of headquarters' anti-espionage team. If it were an anti-espionage team, they would have opened fire. With those few pieces of meat, you could be collecting our corpses by now!" Deng Yuankai said angrily.

He knew he had been too careless. A momentary lapse in concentration had aroused the suspicion of those around him. This shouldn't be. What was wrong with him? He knew these people were highly trained agents, and they were on high alert. The slightest flaw could lead to a fatal mistake, yet he still took the wrong step.

Pei Tai stared intently into Deng Yuankai's eyes, nodded, and said softly, "Alright, even if what you said makes sense, how do you explain going to that pharmacy in the south of the city to buy medicine the next day?"

As if a cold wind had swept over him, Deng Yuankai couldn't help but shiver. He hadn't expected Pei Tai to be following him, yet he hadn't noticed at all.

He licked his chapped lips, trying to keep his tone steady, and said, "You know I'm not feeling well, so I went to buy some cold medicine. What's so strange about that?"

Pei Tai smiled coldly and said slowly, "Our investigation department is in the east of the city, but you have to go to the south of the city to buy medicine. There are so many pharmacies in between. Aren't you going a bit too far?"

Upon hearing Pei Tai's question, Deng Yuankai was speechless, unable to find a reason to explain himself.

“Don’t forget, I learned a lot from you before. You even took me to that pharmacy once. The owner there is an old friend of yours. I know exactly what he does!” Pei Tai continued.

Deng Yuankai was speechless. He stared intently into Pei Tai's eyes and said through gritted teeth, "You really are my good disciple!"
