Chapter 786 The Chinese Black Chamber

Yu Cheng laughed and said, "We don't dare to put up a sign for the decryption department. I heard that there is a decryption department in the United States called the 'Black Room,' so everyone calls this place the 'Black Room.' In short, the level of secrecy is the highest."

At this point, he sighed again: "Who knew there would be a mole inside!"

Ning Zhiheng told his guards to stay at the gate, while he and Yu Cheng entered. There was a team of guards at the gate, and the officer on duty had already been notified. After checking their identification, they were allowed to pass.

After entering the compound, Ning Zhiheng looked around. It was no different from an ordinary mansion, probably originally occupied by a wealthy family. However, the atmosphere inside was very oppressive and quiet. There were guards in the corridors and courtyard. Occasionally, someone would walk by, but they would hurry by and ignore Ning Zhiheng and his companion.

Yu Cheng was clearly used to this. He led Ning Zhiheng into the inner courtyard and pointed to several rooms, saying, "These rooms are the decryption team's workshop, radio receiving room, listening room, archives room, etc. The people inside are working, and we can't go in right now."

Ning Zhiheng frowned and said, "Didn't they say the decryption work is making no progress? Then what are they still doing?"

Yu Cheng shook his head, shrugged, and said, "Who knows? These people are all very arrogant. If you ask them a little bit of knowledge, they get impatient and never explain. I have to put on a smiling face for them."

Just then, a middle-aged man strode over and, from a few steps away, extended his hands, smiling as he said, "Director Ning, I heard it was you coming to inspect, so I rushed over immediately. I'm so sorry for the delay!"

Ning Zhiheng smiled and extended his hand to shake his, saying with a smile, "Old Bian, I've come uninvited and must be bothering you!"

The visitor was none other than Bian Deshou, a lieutenant colonel and section chief in the Telecommunications Department, who had been a major and group leader in Nanjing a few years ago. He had met Ning Zhiheng several times and had assisted him in solving the cheongsam case and the radio wave case. The two were old friends.

Ning Zhiheng already knew from the information he reviewed last night that Bian Deshou was currently serving as the director of the decryption room. He did not understand code decryption and was only responsible for assisting the experts in the decryption room, a position similar to that of a steward.

Bian Deshou naturally dared not neglect Ning Zhiheng, a high-ranking officer in the Military Intelligence Bureau. He glanced at Yu Cheng beside him and knew why the two had come. He quickly smiled and said, "Director Ning, please give me your instructions. I will definitely cooperate!"

Ning Zhiheng pointed to the studio and said, "Can I go in and take a look?"

Bian Deshou quickly nodded and said, "No problem, I'll arrange it right away."

Yu Cheng rolled his eyes and said irritably, "Old Bian, I've come here so many times, just wanting to go in and take a look, and you always give me a long face and say no. Why are you so agreeable this time?"

Bian Deshou didn't answer at all, pretending not to hear, and turned to arrange things. He quickly came back and asked Ning Zhiheng to come over, and Yu Cheng also quickly followed.

Bian Deshou glanced at Yu Cheng, opened his mouth as if to speak, but ultimately said nothing. Yu Cheng pretended not to see anything and followed Ning Zhiheng into the studio.

These workshops are all interconnected, and the space inside is extremely large. The first workshop is filled with large radio receiving equipment, and eight radio operators wearing headsets are carefully receiving and recording various radio signals, with beeping sounds constantly ringing out.

In the second room, there was a long square table with various data materials on it. Eight or nine telecommunications experts were working on calculations with their heads down, and no one looked up at the three of them.

Ning Zhiheng stepped forward and glanced at the materials on the table. An expert immediately reached out and blocked the materials, then gathered them up and looked at Ning Zhiheng with a scrutinizing gaze, as if he were a thief. If Bian Deshou hadn't been standing next to Ning Zhiheng, he probably would have called the guards.

Helpless, Ning Zhiheng turned to look at another man in his thirties standing to the side. This man was filling in a set of numbers into a form. He looked up at Ning Zhiheng, smiled slightly, and showed a friendly expression.

Ning Zhiheng quickly smiled back, gestured, and took a telegram from the table. It was all in the form of ordinary Arabic numerals. Ning Zhiheng was just a little curious, but he knew nothing about codebreaking. He glanced at it and put it down casually.

He turned to look at the other experts, silently matching them with the people in the materials he had reviewed, before entering the third room. This room was full of desks, indicating that office space was quite limited, with each person having only one desk and everyone sharing a room. Several experts were also calculating data in this room, and every now and then a telegraph operator would hand over a new telegram.

The entire decoding room was very quiet. No one said a word, and there was little communication between them. Everyone was quietly busy.
