Final Chapter

Just two months ago, the Military Intelligence Bureau suffered its heaviest blow since its establishment. The bureau chief died in an accident when his plane crashed in Daishan. This tragedy was like a bolt from the blue for the Military Intelligence Bureau, a devastating blow. For a time, the huge Military Intelligence Bureau was shaken and filled with fear and unease.

Soon, news spread from higher-ups that the Military Intelligence Bureau would be dismantled and reorganized during the reorganization of the military government, and a large number of personnel would be separated. Miao Yongyi, who was quite marginalized in the First Intelligence Division and had always found it difficult to integrate, could no longer sit still. He immediately contacted Ning Zhiheng, and a transfer order was issued. Miao Yongyi was transferred from Wuhan and led his original team to report to Ning Zhiheng, the director of the Second Action Division.

“Yongyi, you’ve seen the situation now. Although we’ve won the war of resistance, our lives are getting harder and harder. Outside, there are demonstrations and protests against the rule of secret agents. Inside the government, various forces are joining forces to suppress and exclude us. Especially with the death of the Director, the big ship of the Military Intelligence Bureau is about to sink. We need to get out as soon as possible and make plans.”

"Has it really come to this?" Miao Yongyi murmured.

This was the prestigious Military Intelligence Bureau, with 50,000 intelligence agents spread across every corner of the country and 200,000 well-equipped regular troops, wielding the power of life and death and intimidating all sides. It's unbelievable that such a behemoth was on the verge of collapse.

Ning Zhiheng was also filled with emotion. Since graduating from military academy, he had joined the Military Intelligence Bureau and witnessed its gradual growth and changes. He had mixed feelings of regret, loss, hesitation and heartache towards the Bureau.

He said slowly, "This is the inevitable trend. Even if the Director hadn't died, the situation would still be the same. He wielded too much power. With hundreds of thousands of military intelligence personnel and armed troops, such a massive force would make anyone wary. As the saying goes, 'the tail that grows too big will surely fall, and the tail that grows too big will be impossible to control.' This was destined!"

After the victory in the War of Resistance against Japan, the Military Intelligence Bureau, which had grown into a behemoth during the war, was perceived as a huge threat by various forces. As a result, these forces joined forces and began to exert their influence. For a time, calls for the abolition of the Military Intelligence Bureau were rampant. Most importantly, Chiang Kai-shek himself became wary of the Military Intelligence Bureau's powerful strength, so the abolition of the Military Intelligence Bureau was a foregone conclusion.

The Director himself was well aware of the situation. He made every effort to salvage the situation and even tried to get through to the Americans, but an unexpected accident occurred. Two months ago, he died in a plane crash. With his death, no one could withstand the pressure from both inside and outside the military intelligence agency, and its fate was now irreversible.

Ning Zhiheng continued, "This reorganization of the Ministry of National Defense by the Military Commission is a good opportunity for us to extricate ourselves. After discussions, we have finally secured a place for ourselves. All of our personnel in the Military Intelligence Bureau have been separated and joined the Second Bureau of the Ministry of National Defense. Deputy Director Huang and I will both be going to work at the Ministry of National Defense. What are your plans?"

Ning Zhiheng, being a high-ranking official, was naturally among the first to receive the news. He also had sufficient intelligence sources within the Kuomintang, so he already knew almost everything about the matter as soon as it was announced.

Miao Yongyi was taken aback for a moment, then immediately nodded and said, "What do I have to think about? Of course I'll go to the Ministry of National Defense with you. But what can we do there? Are we supposed to lead troops?"

Ning Zhiheng smiled slightly and explained carefully: "The newly established Ministry of National Defense is a huge organization. The Second Bureau is the Intelligence Bureau, which is responsible for collecting and processing strategic intelligence from all aspects. It is still doing our old job. However, this department is a level higher than the Military Intelligence Bureau. Not only is its scope of work wider, but its authority is also greater. It is said that a part of the Military Command and our Military Intelligence Bureau's Second Action Division were merged, and based on this, two divisions and sixteen sections were expanded. It is very large. This can be considered as us returning to the military and getting back on the right track, so that we won't always be called the Eastern Depot or the Embroidered Uniform Guard behind our backs. This name sounds much better."

Miao Yongyi's spirits lifted. In fact, he was still most concerned about returning to the military. Being treated like a spy every day was never a good thing. Now that he had transformed into a regular soldier, it was a rare and good thing.

He couldn't help but laugh out loud, saying, "I didn't expect that with the collapse of the Military Intelligence Bureau, our lives would actually become easier. This is a good thing. Has it been decided yet?"

"It's settled!" Ning Zhiheng nodded. "This trip back to Nanjing was because of this matter. Several bigwigs have been urging me to return to Beijing as soon as possible to make preparations. My specific position hasn't been decided yet, but it's better than staying in the Military Intelligence Bureau. You know, the higher-ups don't even want to keep the name 'Military Intelligence Bureau' anymore. They said they'd change it to something like 'Secret Bureau,' which is neither fish nor fowl."

"Secret Service, that name sounds depressing!" Miao Yongyi said, frowning.

As they sped towards Nanjing, the Jiuhua Grand Hotel on the shore of Xuanwu Lake in Nanjing was brightly lit and bustling with activity.

The entrance was lined with cars of all colors. This was one of the most prestigious hotels in Nanjing, with luxurious and opulent decorations, making it the preferred venue for banquets and parties for high society.

The grand and spacious courtyard was filled with flowers and colorful lights. The bright lights made the courtyard colorful and dazzling, like an imperial garden. Men in suits and elegant women in formal attire strolled among the courtyards in twos and threes, and everything complemented each other perfectly.

Passing through the courtyard, we entered a magnificent and uniquely designed hall. Long tables lined the perimeter, laden with fine wines and delicacies, and were already packed with elegantly dressed men and women.

Among them were high-ranking officials and dignitaries of the Nationalist government, as well as wealthy merchants and gentry. Most of them were Nationalist military officers in crisp uniforms. They were all elites of high society, and they gathered together, toasting and chatting, creating a lively atmosphere.
