Chapter 40 Fire in the Compound

Chapter 40 Fire in the Compound

"Political Commissar Hao is still inside." Dang Xianghong was so anxious that she didn't care about anything else, pushed Shen Wanjun aside, and rushed in.

Shen Wanjun ran to the duty room and quickly reported the fire.

The duty officer quickly blew the emergency whistle, and well-trained soldiers rushed over from all directions.

The people in the courtyard formed a long line, passing buckets and basins of water.

Even sand and wet blankets were brought in to help fight the fire.

Some people were even using brooms to frantically beat out the flames.

Well-trained soldiers used hand-operated fire pumps to draw water from the well.

The fire was quickly extinguished, but Political Commissar Hao, having inhaled too much smoke, was taken to the hospital.

Fortunately, he survived.

The next day, Dang Xianghong and Shen Wanjun went to visit Hao Mei. As soon as they reached the door, they heard shouting and cursing coming from inside.

"Idiot, how could I have such an stupid sister?" It was Political Commissar Hao's voice.

"How can you put fire tongs on the table? Don't you have any common sense?" It was Commander Liang's voice.

Shen Wanjun, carrying her things, asked softly, "Sister Hong, shall we go in?"

They're arguing; it would be so awkward for them to go in now.

“Since I’m already here,” Dang Xianghong tossed her hair and strode into the door. “Political Commissar Hao, I’ve come to see you.”

Shen Wanjun followed behind, "Political Commissar Hao, are you feeling better?"

Upon seeing Dang Xianghong, Hao Mei exclaimed excitedly, "Thanks to you, otherwise this old body of mine would have been..."

Hao Mei covered her face and cried, while Hao Yan stood to the side, not daring to speak.

Shen Wanjun placed the things on the table and, meeting Liang Yi's scrutinizing gaze, sweetly greeted him, "Hello, Commander Liang."

Hao Yan desperately tried to signal to Hao Mei with her eyes: Sister, look! This vixen is seducing my brother-in-law.

Hao Mei rolled her eyes: "Hao Yan, why don't you go back first?"

Hao Yan was stunned, her eyebrows furrowing. Where could she go back to?

The house was burned down.

"Please provide accommodation for the next few days," Liang Yi said. "I'll make the arrangements."

Hao Yan didn't want to stay there; the room was small and the road was far.

Seeing Shen Wanjun, she suddenly had an idea: "Brother-in-law, why don't we squeeze in with someone in the courtyard? Anyway, the house can be repaired in a few days."

Liang Yi frowned. It was unlikely that it would be fixed in a few days. He didn't want to trouble others, and he didn't want to owe anyone a favor.

But Hao Yan seemed determined: "I think Sister Dang and Comrade Shen would definitely be happy to help."

Dang Xianghong said, "You can stay in the second bedroom of my house."

Hao Yan did not want to stay at Dang Xianghong's house. She said, "Comrade Shen, don't you want to? This is a good thing to do and help others."

Shen Wanjun found Hao Yan to be a very interesting person, who liked to put hats on people all the time.

She said, "My second bedroom is also unused."

Hao Yan was overjoyed; her chance to get closer to Song Zhan had finally arrived.

She originally liked Song Zhan very much and couldn't wait for him to get a divorce.

Unexpectedly, he was suddenly injured and became paralyzed. She had already given up on him.

You can see that Shen Wanjun looks like a fairy, chattering away beside Song Zhan.

She felt very uncomfortable, as if Shen Wanjun had stolen the happy life that was rightfully hers.

Hao Yan can do without Song Zhan, but she won't allow Song Zhan to do without her and find someone prettier to "replace" her.

"Then I..."

Before Hao Yan could finish speaking, Shen Wanjun interrupted her, saying, "If Political Commissar Hao and Regiment Commander Liang don't have a place to stay, they can stay at our house if they don't mind."

Hao Yan was stunned; this was not the outcome she wanted.

"What about me?" she cried, looking at Hao Mei with distress. "Sister, you can't abandon me."

Dang Xianghong said, "You can stay at my house. Old Li is away on a mission these days, so you can keep me company."

It doesn't seem appropriate for a young girl like you to live with a young couple.

Political Commissar Hao held the hands of Dang Xianghong and Shen Wanjun, expressing his deepest gratitude, "If it weren't for the two of you, I would have died long ago."

One person rushed in and carried her out after she fainted, while the other promptly sought help.

Now the two of them are taking the initiative to help her solve her accommodation problem, and Hao Mei's eyes are filled with tears.

Shen Wanjun is such a good comrade; she will never listen to her sister's nonsense again.

Seeing his wife's reaction, Liang Yi decided not to bring up the matter of staying at the guesthouse again.

At noon, Hao Mei was discharged from the hospital, and Shen Wanjun took the two of them home directly.

Hearing the noise, Song Zhan put down his book, wheeled himself in his wheelchair, and opened the door.

"Wife, you're finally back! I..."

He didn't say the rest.

There were three people standing at the door: Shen Wanjun and the political commissar and his wife.

Upon seeing Hao Mei, Song Zhan asked warily, "Political Commissar Hao, what do you want now?"

Is this never going to end? What crime are you trying to pin on Shen Wanjun this time?

He also brought Commander Liang with him.

Song Zhan's mind raced, and he went through every possible question he could think of.

After confirming that Shen Wanjun was alright, he said, "If there's nothing else, please have a safe journey."

Liang Yi was a little embarrassed; how could this kid be so rude?

Hao Mei said with a smile, "Battalion Commander Song, we've come to your house to bother you for a few days."

Song Zhan's face turned ugly. What did that mean?

Why would they station themselves at his house just to monitor Shen Wanjun?

Shen Wanjun led the two inside and pointed to the room next door, "The second bedroom is over there. Wait a moment while I tidy up."

Hao Mei waved her hand, "I'll do it."

Song Zhan pulled Shen Wanjun aside and whispered, "Why did you let the wolf into the house?"

Shen Wanjun tapped his head, "My husband is amazing, he can even use idioms now. Here's a kiss for you."

As she spoke, she gave Song Zhan a quick kiss on the cheek.

Turning around and seeing the shocked expressions on Hao Mei and Liang Yi's faces, Shen Wanjun calmly said, "I'll go prepare dinner."

She ran to the kitchen as if fleeing, closed the door, and covered her chest, feeling so embarrassed and ashamed.

This feeling is like kissing your husband in front of your parents; they don't understand and will even scrutinize you.

"Ahem, Commander Liang, let me make you some tea." Song Zhan touched his face, feeling rather embarrassed.

At the dining table, Hao Mei and Liang Yi ate the tasteless food, both smiling bitterly.

Seeing Song Zhan enjoying his meal across from them, the two reasonably suspected that he had a problem with his sense of taste.

How did he manage to swallow such awful food, and even enjoy it so much?

Seeing that neither of them had touched their chopsticks much, Shen Wanjun said apologetically, "My cooking isn't very good."

Hao Mei, living under someone else's roof, spoke much more politely: "It's alright, at least we're all familiar with each other."

Liang Yi took a sip of porridge, and the rice in his mouth was clearly undercooked.

Lying down at night, the elderly couple closed the door and sighed, wondering when the house would be repaired and when this would end.

Shen Wanjun told Song Zhan about the hospital incident and breathed a sigh of relief when she learned that Political Commissar Hao hadn't come to cause trouble.

The next morning, before dawn, Hao Yan knocked on the door.

"Sis, you haven't eaten yet, have you? Let me make you something."

He looked at Shen Wanjun and said, "Comrade Shen, you wouldn't disagree, would you?"

When someone volunteered to cook, how could Shen Wanjun refuse? She pointed towards the kitchen and said, "I'd be more than happy to oblige."

Political Commissar Hao knew what her sister was thinking, and she said apologetically, "Comrade Chen, don't overthink it, my sister is just... can't sit still."

The restless Hao Yan quickly prepared a meal, setting out a table full of fried dough sticks, soy milk, and steamed buns.

"They also have tofu pudding, vegetable pancakes, and layered pancakes here. I can make whatever I want."

She wiped her hands and handed Song Zhan a steamed bun: "Brother Song Zhan, try it, is it good?"

Song Zhan took it and took a bite.

Hao Yan was very proud of herself; with her culinary skills, winning over a man's stomach was a piece of cake.
