Chapter 91 Eavesdropping
Three days later, Xiang Wenyuan's house arrest finally ended.
After regaining his freedom, he walked down the street with two servants, looking aggressive and with dissatisfaction and arrogance on his face.
Xiang Wenyuan became furious at the thought of having to watch Chen Ziming riding on his head.
"Everyone, make way, make way, fresh pears - ouch!"
An old man selling fruit was pushing a wooden cart, shouting as he sold his fruits, and people around him kept moving away.
Xiang Wenyuan was unmoved, and as a result, the wooden cart failed to turn in time and hit him.
The milky white pears rolled all over the floor.
"You old bastard, don't you have eyes?" A servant cursed angrily and pushed the old man to the ground.
The old man also realized that he had accidentally bumped into the young master, and was frightened. He knelt on the ground in panic and apologized.
"Master, I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I didn't mean it!"
Xiang Wenyuan was already in a bad mood, and after being hit, he immediately flew into a rage.
He rubbed his sore butt, “I didn’t mean to do that, but I think you did it on purpose!
Do you think that just saying sorry is enough? Come on, smash it for me! "
For a moment, the old man's crying, the sound of pears breaking, and the shouting of people around were all mixed together.
The servants pushed all the pears on the old man's cart to the ground, and the wooden cart was overturned.
"Pears! My pears--!" The old man cried and crawled on the ground to pick up pears, but his cries were soon drowned out.
Xiang Wenyuan was no longer angry, but when he looked at the mess in front of him, he felt a little better.
A few young men stepped out from the crowd and said to Xiang Wenyuan with a smile:
"Hey, Master Xiang, are you in a bad mood today? How about we, the brothers, accompany you to have some fun?"
Normally, Xiang Wenyuan was very familiar with this group of hangers-on, but today he was in no mood to eat, drink and have fun.
"No, I'm annoyed." He waved his hand as if to shoo away a fly.
A fan blocked his way, and another young man came up and said with a smile:
"It is our honor to share Mr. Xiang's worries!
Hey, we know what Mr. Xiang is thinking, look there——"
Pointing his folding fan outside the crowd, Xiang Wenyuan looked in the direction and saw a familiar figure in the distance.
It’s Zhu Qingyan.
Xiang Wenyuan exclaimed in his heart, meeting on the street, if this isn’t fate, then what is this?
"Young Master, Young Master, where are you going?" several servants shouted.
"Go back first, don't follow me!"
Xiang Wenyuan squeezed out of the crowd and chased in the direction of Zhu Qingyan.
Just when he was about to catch up, he saw Zhu Qingyan walking through an alley, taking out the key and opening the door of a small courtyard.
Zhu Qingyan just went home to see his mother and had to go back to the academy later, so he didn't lock the door.
Seeing her enter the house, Xiang Wenyuan pushed open the gate as if possessed by a ghost and walked over.
Zhu Qingyan didn't notice someone following him. As soon as he entered the house, he almost tripped over something on the ground.
There were a few baskets of rare fruits on the market and two rolls of jacquard silk.
At first glance, these things are not cheap. Su is frugal on weekdays, so how could he afford to buy these things?
"Mom, where did these come from?" Zhu Qingyan asked curiously.
Then he thought that it should have been sent by someone from the Chen Mansion.
Although Mrs. Chen had a strong personality, she was quite nice to her. Perhaps she thought that the Su family could be her future in-laws, so she sent someone to deliver some gifts.
Or maybe Chen Ziming bought it as a gift for his future mother-in-law?
Zhu Qingyan felt a little sweet in his heart. He didn't expect that Senior Brother Ziming was so thoughtful!
Su knew that Zhu Qingyan had come back at noon and had just prepared the meal. As she brought out the food, she said:
"Oh, those were delivered by Madam Pei herself this morning."
Mrs. Pei?
Zhu Qingyan's mouth sank and his tone became alert.
"Why did she come here to cause trouble for you?"
Zhu Qingyan certainly knew what was going on between his mother and father. Pei Yue, the principal wife, suddenly came to visit and brought something with her.
Isn't that a weasel wishing a happy new year to the chicken?
Su smiled at her soothingly and asked her to sit down and eat.
"No, Madam Pei came to thank you because you saved Lan Jie'er and sent her back last time."
Zhu Qingyan said "Oh" and muttered, "She knows how to behave."
"Qingyan." Su put down her chopsticks, her eyes showing a hint of reproach, "Mrs. Pei is your elder after all, you can't be so rude."
"Mom, don't you always hate her the most? If she hadn't been there, preventing you from entering the Zhu family, how could you have lived such a hard life?"
Su sighed softly, recalling the scene when she met Pei Yue in the morning.
She originally thought that Pei Yue came to cause trouble for her, but she didn't expect Pei Yue to come to thank her, and his attitude was very sincere.
The two sat in the room looking at each other in silence for a long time.
I remember the last time we met was when we went to pay tribute to Zhu Hongsheng. We were also sitting in a carriage like this and the atmosphere was also awkward.
Su finally couldn't help but speak first and asked Pei Yue if she hated her.
As soon as the question was asked, even Su himself found it ridiculous.
Although it was Zhu Hongsheng who flirted with her first, it was not until she found out that she was pregnant that Zhu Hongsheng told her that he already had a family...
But after knowing the truth, she still insisted on giving birth to the child. On the one hand, she was reluctant to give up her and her lover's flesh and blood, and on the other hand, she hoped that this child could bind Zhu Hongsheng's heart.
If it weren't for her, perhaps Pei Yue and Zhu Hongsheng would have been a perfect couple.
Unexpectedly, Pei Yue laughed softly.
That smile made Su feel for a moment that the nightmare that had haunted her all her life seemed to her like a joke as light as a feather.
"I can't say I hate you, and of course, I can't say I sympathize with or like you.
If we really want to hate someone, the person we should hate should be Zhu Hongsheng." Pei Yue said.
"It's just that he doesn't deserve it."
Su was stunned in place, listening to Pei Yue continue to speak slowly:
“I also hate myself for not having the ability to choose my husband and marrying someone like this.
If he understood family responsibilities, he shouldn't have such an ambiguous relationship with you.
If he really likes you that much, and he admits to me openly and wants to take you in as a concubine, I would respect him as a man.
It's a pity that he never respected me and never dared to mention you at home. You were just a pastime to him.
You and I have never met each other, but I am angry with you and I want to compete with you for a man like this. How can this be justified?
In that case, wouldn't it be too cheap for him?"
Pei Yue’s words are still echoing in Su’s ears.
"Mom, what's wrong with you?" Zhu Qingyan asked worriedly.
Su came back to her senses and smiled with some relief, "It's nothing, eat quickly."
"You are still young and don't understand some things. Just remember to respect Madam Pei when you see her in the future."
Zhu Qingyan didn't know why Su's attitude had changed like this, and said helplessly:
"Mom, you're not still thinking about asking that old man Zhu and Madam Pei to recognize me, right? Haven't I suffered enough before?
In their eyes, I am just a concubine who is not presentable. Why should I humiliate myself?"
Outside the window, there was a sudden sound of something being knocked over.
Zhu Qingyan was startled and rushed out to see what was happening. He saw that the courtyard door was open and a bamboo sieve used for drying beans had fallen to the ground.
Su came over, picked up the bamboo sieve and smiled at her.
"It's okay, I think it was the wind, let's go back to the house."
