High Steps Across the Clouds (8)

High Steps Across the Clouds (8)

Su Ni gave up using her powers on her, probably because she had realized that her powers were ineffective against her, and decisively shifted her focus to another life form.

The only living being present besides them was the white bird that Su Ni was holding.

Shu Ningmiao turned to look at him, and the atmosphere around them suddenly became extremely quiet.

It was completely dark by now, a gentle breeze rustled the leaves, and few people would dare to enter a private residence; the nearest sounds of people were far away.

The moonlight shone on the birdcage in Su Ni's hands, making it sparkle. He held the birdcage tightly, and pale blue veins appeared on the back of his pale hands.

He suddenly spoke up: "Sister, nothing will happen, it's just that you're going to lose another little bird."

Since Shu Ning had already said so much, it meant that she already knew everything she needed to know, so he simply got straight to the point.

There was no one else here besides them, so Su Ni didn't deliberately raise her voice; instead, her lowered tone sounded more pleasant.

Shu Ningmiao looked him up and down and sneered, "Are you threatening me?"

According to Su Jia, Su Ni's special ability is related to "damage transfer".

"Transfer" is a typical type of additional ability. The transferred content is usually positive or negative status, poison or fire damage, etc. An ability that can transfer all damage is indeed very rare.

I've heard that superpowers are related to a person's subconscious. If that's true, Shu Ningmiao thinks it's reasonable for Su Ni to have such a power.

Su Ni has suffered from a genetic disease for many years, and she must secretly wish that everyone in the world could suffer as much as she does.

Shu Ningmiao took a step in his direction.

"Don't come any closer." Su Ni tilted her head, her light pink hair gently cascading down like smooth silk. "You know I can't feel pain. No matter what you do to me, it'll only cause more pain to fall on other things."

He could even harm others through self-harm, which was the most incredible aspect of his ability in Shu Ningmiao's opinion—she knew that Su Ni couldn't feel pain.

The genetic disease that Su Ni suffers from is extremely rare, with unknown causes. The incidence rate is only one or two per two million people. Most infants with this disease cannot survive to adulthood after facing treatment costs of millions of CIN.

In addition to hypopigmentation, photophobia, coagulation disorders, and anemia, people with this disease are born with sensory autonomic nerve disorders and loss of pain sensation due to chromosomal abnormalities.

Because Su Ni has no sense of pain, she is easily injured for no apparent reason.

With so many debuffs stacked together, it's safe to say that Su Ni's survival until now is entirely due to her father spending money to prolong her life.

However, these terrifying symptoms all became advantages after Su Ni's superpowers awakened. He was not afraid of pain and could recklessly harm others by hurting himself.

It's not surprising that he dared to provoke and challenge her now that he had acquired such a powerful skill from any angle.

Before she could get close, Su Ni slowly raised her hand and grabbed her own neck first: "Tell me, am I stronger than you now?"

The boy looked up at her, his eyes moist, like a rain nourishing the dampness.

He slowly tightened his fingers around his neck, his knuckles digging into his flesh, blood rushing to his most vulnerable spot. Yet, there was no pain on his face. Instead, the little white bird in the cage suddenly let out a shrill cry, as if something invisible was gripping its neck, struggling and fluttering wildly in the cage.

"See, just like you did to me before."

A faint blush rose to Su Ni's face. He clearly felt that he was in control of his own life, and also of the life of the bird in the cage: "I can too."

He didn't know why Shu Ningmiao was angry with him for killing that bird when he was a child, but this could be his weapon. As long as he held the bird's life in his hands, Shu Ningmiao would be hesitant to act against him.

marvelous.

The next second, Shu Ningmiao shattered his illusion, grabbed his collar forcefully, and slammed his head against the railing.

Blood slowly trickled down Su Ni's face, but disappeared in a moment. Blood seeped from the white bird's head, and it cried out even louder.

"Have you been taken over by superpowers?" Shu Ningmiao grabbed his hair and lifted him up. "Don't you think it's ridiculous to threaten me with a bird?"

Su Ni looked at her expressionlessly.

"Let me think," Shu Ningmiao said slowly. "Besides this superpower, you have no ability to resist at all, right?"

Although Su Ni could not feel pain, her illness was real, and her physical strength was even worse than that of an ordinary person.

Secondly, he only awakened superpowers, he did not become a god.

If he could truly transfer any harm he suffered onto others, that would be absurd; Pinhes might lose half its population because of the injuries he deliberately sustained.

His special ability must have some kind of 'conditions' and 'limitations,' but because she hadn't had much contact with him, she hadn't discovered it yet.

But it doesn't matter. Su Ni is so weak, she can just grab him and test him one by one.

The most likely condition is 'contact'.

Because many additional superpowers have such prerequisites. Roughly recalling, both she and the white bird did indeed have brief encounters with Su Ni.

If the conditions are met, she doesn't need to worry about him transferring his object to another being, since there's no one else here.

"I'm curious, if this bird dies before you, who else can you transfer the damage to?" Shu Ningmiao asked him. "Want to try?"

Su Ni never expected that she didn't care about the bird at all. Upon hearing this, her eyes darkened and she desperately tried to break free from her grasp.

"But I have another way."

Shu Ningmiao said, "Your special ability has a limited scope of use, right?"

Before he could even process the meaning behind Shu Ningmiao's words, he instinctively wanted to act, but how could he possibly outrun Shu Ningmiao, who was in a state of heightened 'anger'?

Shu Ningmiao directly broke the birdcage in his hand with her bare hands.

The white bird finally broke free of its cage, flapping its wings and stumbling as it flew into the sky and quickly flew away.

"At this distance, can you use your special ability?" Shu Ningmiao waited two seconds before speaking.

Su Ni's face was already pale, but now it was so white it was almost transparent, completely devoid of color.

He stared at her blankly, his body trembling slightly beneath her hand.

He was not afraid of pain or injury, but only of death.

Therefore, of all the people in the world, he is only afraid of Shu Ningmiao.

Shu Ningmiao really wanted to kill him, and she almost did. He still remembers the suffocating feeling of being immersed in the icy cold water.

"Sister, I was wrong." His body twitched slightly, he choked up, and his eyes were moist and red: "I was wrong."

Shu Ningmiao looked down at his performance, but her mind was already wandering.

Yelü Qi was absolutely right. Even someone like Su Ni, who gains superpowers, will develop an inflated sense of self-importance and misjudge her own strength.

We need to be more careful in the future.

She released her hand in disgust, letting Su Ni fall to her knees at her feet.

Su Ni's shoulders trembled slightly. Her clothes had probably just caught on the railing and were torn open a little, revealing a necklace hanging from her neck with a gray-white pendant that looked like a T-shaped cross with a round handle—a very unusual design.

Su Ni noticed that the necklace had fallen out. As if remembering something, she hurriedly grabbed the pendant, tore it off, and handed it to her.

"This superpower item can temporarily block pain after use." Su Ni smiled ingratiatingly at her, "Sister, the little bird is missing, so this is for you."

...Shu Ningmiao thought to herself, he really is as flexible as ever.

Although superpowered items are rare and precious, the function of this particular item was simply laughable when applied to Su Ni, so it's not surprising that he was so generous in giving it away.

Shu Ningmiao did have some murderous intent towards him, but she never intended to make a move here. Pine was not a lawless place; it was a wealthy area heavily guarded by security personnel. She had no reason to risk her life for Su Ni.

She said she needed to go back to school, but it wasn't an excuse. Weston asked her to come to her office before class the next morning in case she was late. She thought it would be better for her to rest in her dorm.

Having taken Su Ni's pendant, Shu Ningmiao didn't plan to use it herself. She wasn't that naive; who knew if he had secretly placed some kind of curse inside?

Superpowered items are indeed precious, and in order to make the most of them, she plans to give them to Weston on Teacher's Day. If they have a curse, that would be even better, so that Weston can use poison to fight poison and neutralize it.

The driver hadn't expected her to leave the Shu family so late. She had already taken leave to go home that night. Shu Ningmiao was too lazy to bother with the hassle, so she simply took a taxi back to school.

The taxi driver took the main road, which was shorter than the way we came, but it involved going through the main road of the elevated highway in Pinheit, where there was occasional traffic congestion.

This elevated highway stretches from Lingtian to Yingjian, traversing the entire city of Pinnacle and occupying most of the urban space. As soon as we entered the highway, the speed indeed slowed down, and the surrounding noise became more pronounced. The lights of gleaming luxury cars blurred into a red and green river, and countless complex sounds mingled with the honking of horns, like a clamorous wave.

The screeching of tires thundered past, growing louder as they approached. Shu Ningmiao looked out the window and saw several motorcycles swaggering through the traffic, drifting wildly and nearly crashing into the sidewalks several times before narrowly avoiding them.

How did they get up the overpass while driving against traffic?

The driver in front saw this, slammed his fist on the steering wheel, and honked his horn briefly: "You want to die but you still want to harm others—"

Shu Ningmiao frowned. These motorcycles seemed to be together. The people on the motorcycles were all wearing black and red hooded cloaks, which covered their faces, making it impossible to see their figures and appearances.

What kind of organization is this?

Strangely, the traffic slowed down to almost a standstill, while several motorcycles traveling in the opposite direction nimbly weaved through the gaps and sped past.

Thick plumes of smoke billowed from under the motorcycle tires, sparks flying everywhere, and the deafening roar nearly shattered eardrums. Many cars rolled down their windows and began to curse loudly.

Shu Ningmiao suddenly froze, looking at the road not far away. Before her, billowing white smoke rose up, the thick smoke almost as high as a two-story building, like a huge dark cloud.

A burst of intense fire suddenly erupted from the plume of white smoke, and large sections of the ground were torn apart and cracked by the shockwave.

Then, the heavy sound of the explosion slowly reached her ears, and countless pieces of collapsed rock flew everywhere and fell from the sky.

The motorcycles emerged from the flames, and the lead one was almost in front of the one she was riding on. Shu Ningmiao saw the person at the front leaning against the motorcycle, with a few strands of dark red hair falling out and fluttering in the wind. Under the hood, her face, which was not clearly visible, wore a playful smile.

The man released one of the motorcycle handlebars and raised his hand into the air. His exposed arm was covered with intricate black patterns from his forearm to his fingertips, making it almost impossible to see the color of his skin.

Amidst the deafening explosions, she heard a clear bird's cry, its piercing sound cutting through the smoke and dust.

A white bird flapped its wings and swooped down, landing on the man's fingertip.
