Chapter 18 Discussing Reading

When Yao Tongjia came out after taking a shower, Xiao Yan was refining oil, and Yao's mother was kneading dough, planning to roll out dumpling wrappers. Yao Tongjia went over to help.

Aunt Yao quickly stopped her: "Wait until I'm done massaging you before you come over, otherwise your bath will be a waste!"

Yao Tongjia thought about it and agreed, so she didn't go over. Instead, she urged the two men to take a shower: "Go take a shower quickly, and then we'll make dumplings together!"

The two men obediently went to take a shower, but Yao's mother was still worried: "Xu'er, can you walk to take a shower by yourself?"

Yao Tongxu tried walking around a bit and felt much better today: "Mom, I feel much better, I can wash myself now!"

"Really? You're much better? You're not lying to me?"

"Yes, Mom, I'm really much better!"

Yao's mother happily came over to see Yao Tongxu walking. Seeing that he was walking steadily, she was so happy that tears welled up in her eyes: "That's great! We'll have dumplings tonight, let's celebrate!"

Seeing that her mother and master were very happy, Yao Tongjia realized that she had forgotten to tell them how much money she had made from the ginseng: "Mom, Master, I forgot to tell you that we made 1,290 yuan from the ginseng this time."

"You bought so much stuff today and still have 1290 yuan left?" Xiao Yan was a little surprised. "I thought you'd only have less than 1000 yuan left. That's great! This money will last us a long time. We can trade it with the villagers for chickens to eat later!"

Yao's mother was also very happy, because she had left Beijing in such a hurry that she hadn't brought much money with her, and Xiao Yan had paid for everything that came up later.

This had always been a painful thing for her, and now that her daughter had brought back so much money, it was somewhat made up for.

When Yao Ma heard that her mother-in-law and sister-in-law were plotting against her and her two children, she was so frightened that she wanted to flee overnight. However, she couldn't find her bankbook anywhere, so she could only wait another day and contact her husband, Ruan Shengpeng.

But when she called, he said he wasn't in the camp. She then asked to contact her uncle, but she couldn't reach him either.

She planned to go directly to the military camp to find her husband and uncle, but when she returned to the courtyard, it was ransacked. Knowing the situation was bad, she had no choice but to leave with her child.

She usually doesn't carry much cash with her, and in this hasty departure, she only took a few pieces of clothing, without any preparation whatsoever.

The two children fell ill as soon as they left Beijing. If it weren't for Xiao Yan, she wouldn't have known what to do. Later, they rested in the suburbs of Beijing and decided on a place to go. Xiao Yan went home and sent all the books to the village.

However, none of the three children were very strong, and they fell ill along the way, so they could only walk and stop frequently.

Sometimes the children get sick, sometimes the adults get sick. By the time they reach the village, they have almost run out of money. After buying houses and necessities and settling down, they are truly penniless.

This is why they never dared to go back after coming here; the trip had been exhausting for both adults and children, and they had no money left.

Adding to the fact that Yao Tongxu has difficulty walking and Xiao Gengwu is also an autistic child, the two adults were taking care of three children. If it weren't for their need to escape, they really wouldn't dare to move. They simply couldn't afford to be injured!

They thought someone would come looking for them, since they had left their information in Beijing. But twelve years have passed, and none of the people who were supposed to come looking for them have come. They have no choice but to continue living here.

Fortunately, life is finally looking up again. The child's illness is getting better, and we have enough money for now. It's truly a double blessing. This meal of dumplings is so wonderful!

The family of five happily made dumplings, and even Xiao Gengwu had a smile on his face because Yao Tongjia had carefully taught him how to make dumplings.

Even the moon hangs high on the tree branch, watching this family of five happily eating dumplings. The moon is reluctant to go home. Today is truly a good day!

When Yao Tongxu woke up the next day, he was indeed able to walk freely. Xiao Yan took his pulse and found that he had fully recovered. Xiao Yan said calmly, "It seems that he overdid it with his health care before. After walking around, his bodily functions have recovered."

"Now that you've fully recovered, you don't need to stay in bed all the time. Just go about your normal routine!" These words made Yao's mother burst into tears. She had once thought she was going to lose her son.

To my surprise, my son made a full recovery. This is truly wonderful news.

Yao Tongjia, thinking that her younger brother had never been to school, suggested, "Why don't we let him go to school?"

“Go to school? He’s already 15 years old, how can he go to school?” Yao’s mother felt a little sad. She herself was a college student, but both of her children were studying at home and had no diplomas.

"Why not? In this day and age, anyone can study, no matter how old they are!"

Those who could afford it could attend school, and those who couldn't would have to stop. The schools were aware of the situation and were generally quite lenient, unlike in modern times where they are very strict!

“If you’re going to study, all three of you should go!” Yao’s mother looked at her three children and said, “Anyway, we don’t lack money right now, so you should all go to school.”

Xiao Yan agreed, saying, "The three of you should all go to school. You two are 15 and the other is 17. It's good for you to get a diploma now. In case the college entrance examination is reinstated in the future, you will have the opportunity to take the exam."

These words made Yao Tongjia glance at her master a few more times: "Master, do you think the college entrance examination will be restarted?"

"How could we not retake the exam? Workers', peasants' and soldiers' universities? What real skills do they have? Some of the people who go there can't even write their own names. They're just there to get a diploma. What good are they?"

"For the country to develop, it definitely needs to re-enroll the college entrance examination. Those of us who have been to university certainly know this. Only by entering university can we learn real skills!"
