Chapter 29 A Sharp Tongue but a Soft Heart

After buying the medicinal herbs, it was already quite late when they returned home. It was 8 o'clock when they entered the house. Grandma Huang was lying on the rocking chair in the yard and only stood up when she saw the four of them return.

"You can't come home this late at night anymore. I go to bed very early. If you come back and knock on the door, you'll wake me up!"

"Old folks, I finally got to sleep, you can't do anything immoral!"

Xiao Yan felt a warmth in her heart, knowing that it was Granny Huang who was worried about them and had waited here specifically for them. She quickly assured her, "They will come back early in the future. Thank you for your concern, Auntie!"

Grandma Huang snorted and went back to her room. The four of them followed her back to their room to get their things and wash up. But then Grandma Huang spoke up again: "There's hot water in the kitchen. Don't all stink like this. Go wash up!"

When Xiao Yan and Yao Tongjia went to the kitchen, they found a large pot of hot water. In this hot weather, each person could take a little hot water, which would be enough for all four of them!

Xiao Yan was delighted: "This Granny Huang is a nice person. Next time we come up here, we should bring her more vegetables. Look, it takes a lot of firewood to boil this hot water. She's really generous!"

"Please pay more attention to Granny Huang in the future, and take care of her health. As an elderly person gets older, it is inevitable that she will have some ailments."

Yao Tongjia felt a warmth in her heart. Grandma Huang was a lonely old woman who always spoke in a harsh tone, as if she wouldn't stop until she choked you to death.

But she does things that are really heartwarming; she's got a sharp tongue but a soft heart!

"I'll be more careful next time, Master, you go first!"

"I see there's plenty of water here. You can wash your hair in the yard first, and I'll wash it for you right after I finish my shower."

Yao Tongjia also felt her hair was a little itchy, so she quickly nodded in agreement and fetched some water to wash her hair in the yard.

Grandma Huang's courtyard is really nice. Not only does it have a well so you don't have to fetch water, but there are also places to wash things around the well. Now Yao Tongjia can wash her hair next to the well.

Even better, not only were toilets built so that people don't have to go to public toilets, but a bathroom was also built so that people don't have to stay in their rooms and carefully wipe their bodies.

By the time the four of them had finished showering and washing their clothes, it was almost ten o'clock. This time would be considered early in modern times, but it was quite late in this era.

All the houses had turned off their light bulbs, and it was pitch black everywhere. The only sound was the barking of a few dogs in the distance.

Xiao Yan followed Yao Tongjia to this bed. It was a bit cramped for the two of them to sleep side by side, but they could still squeeze in.

Xiao Yan took out a palm-leaf fan and fanned herself: "Seeing Granny Huang like this, I feel very relieved that you are all here. But Tongtong, never go to the black market again."

"We'd rather eat less than try to take advantage of such a loophole."

Seeing Xiao Yan's worry, Yao Tongjia could only suppress her restless heart: "Okay, Master, I won't go to the black market!"

"That's good. Although your brother Xiao is two years older than you, I still trust you quite a bit. You must be careful with your words and actions while you're here teaching these two!"

"This era is a bit crazy; one wrong move and someone can die. Come back after class, and don't walk outside at night!"

Yao Tongjia could only nod repeatedly. She was initially tempted to exchange the supplies in the space for money, as they had too little money on hand.

But seeing how nervous her master was, she decided not to test their nerves and would deal with it later!

Although this room is small, it's still a single room, so it's bearable. We can talk about buying a house later. I'm only 15 years old now, so there's no need to rush!

As Yao Tongjia pondered these thoughts, she drifted off to sleep in the gentle breeze of the palm-leaf fan.

Seeing that Yao Tongjia was asleep, Xiao Yan reached out and brushed her stray hairs behind her. Tongtong had really become her daughter-in-law, and she would definitely treat her like a mother and daughter in the future!

When Yao Tongjia woke up the next day to the noise in the yard, she saw that there was no one in bed. She quickly immersed her consciousness into the space and checked the time. It was six o'clock in the morning. Fortunately, it was still early.

When Yao Tongjia came out of the bathroom with her clothes, everyone was in the yard. The table from last night was still there, and Granny Huang was calling out to get the food.

Xiao Yan busied herself in the kitchen, carrying a plate and inviting, "Auntie, why don't you come and eat with us?"

Grandma Huang shook her head: "You all eat quickly, then go to class!"

Xiao Yan put down the dishes and invited everyone to sit down. Breakfast was simple, consisting of stir-fried vegetables, boiled sweet potatoes, and eggs.

I put the eggs on my desk yesterday, and when Grandma Huang came out and saw them, she took them to boil.

Everyone finished eating in silence. As Xiao Yan packed up her things, she said, "You guys go to class. I'm going to buy some things and then I'll go back. You all need to stick together and take good care of each other while you're here!"

"Especially you two men, you need to take good care of Tongtong. You can't let Tongtong take care of everything for you!"

"Don't worry, Aunt Xiao, I definitely won't let my sister do any work!"

Xiao Gengwu simply gave a faint "Hmm!"

This earned him a glare from Xiao Yan; this son could really be thrown away!

Schools aren't as strict now. There's no morning reading session; classes start promptly at 8:00 AM. Today was the first day of classes, and they wanted to get there early, so they set off for school at 7:30 AM.

When we arrived at the school gate, we saw Principal Ke. Principal Ke pointed to the classroom and said, "The three of you are all in Class 1 of the second year of junior high school. You see, it's the leftmost classroom on the third floor."

After thanking the principal, the three of them went straight to the third floor. There were only a few people in the classroom, so they found a seat and sat down.

Xiao Gengwu sat with Yao Tongjia. Xiao Gengwu was quite tall, so in order not to block the people behind him, he chose to sit by the window on the left.

Xiao Gengwu sat by the window, with Yao Tongjia to his right. To Yao Tongjia's right was the aisle, and then Yao Tongxu sat there, making the three of them sit together.

Students gradually entered the classroom. Judging from their familiar greetings, they must have been in the same class last semester.

Upon seeing three unfamiliar faces, some people ignored them, while others came over to greet them: "Hello, where did you come from?"

The three of them had discussed the answer beforehand. If they said they had never gone to school, it would set a bad example. So Yao Tongxu replied, "We skipped a grade from elementary school!"

A rather refined-looking person exclaimed in surprise: "What? Skipping a grade? All three of them skipping a grade at the same time?"

"You could say that we took a test from the principal before coming here!"

These words drew everyone's attention, but Xiao Gengwu and Yao Tongjia ignored them, as they were looking at an English dictionary.

She couldn't go to the black market, but she couldn't let money slip by. Following her previous strategy, she decided to check out Xinhua Bookstore to see if they had any books that needed translation.

She now takes advantage of her free time to look at English dictionaries and see what the differences are between them and modern ones.

Xiao Gengwu followed Yao Tongjia's lead and did whatever she did. When Yao Tongjia shared her ideas with him, he was somewhat tempted, as he had never earned money before!

Xiao Gengwu had never systematically studied English before, but he had a good memory. Now, he could memorize the entire vocabulary book in just a few seconds by flipping through a dictionary.

That's absolutely amazing! Yao Tongjia is drooling with envy!
