Chapter 32 (Translation)

The private car service was fast; when they arrived in the city, it was not yet three o'clock, and they drove the car directly to a courtyard.

Minister Tan put them down and said, "I have something to do, so I won't go in. I'm going back to the county tomorrow afternoon. Are you coming back with me?"

"It would be foolish not to take a ride when there's one available," Yao Tongjia nodded quickly. "Minister Tan, remember to pick us up. We'll go back with you!"

After Minister Tan drove away, Principal Ke went over and knocked on the door: "Old Pan, Old Pan, come out quickly, I have a surprise for you!"

Then came a series of clattering sounds: "You old Ke, what kind of surprise can you give me? Can those junior high school kids from your school bring me any translators?"

As soon as he finished speaking, the door opened, and a disheveled person with dark circles under his eyes that looked like they were about to fall to the ground and a listless demeanor appeared. Sure enough, he was someone who had been staying up all night for a long time.

As he opened the door, Old Pan yawned as he walked in: "Get to the point, or spit it out, I'm busy!"

"You'll regret treating me like this in a minute. They listen to me!" Principal Ke said in a low voice, clearly not wanting Xiao Gengwu and Yao Tongjia to hear the rest.

But Lao Pan wouldn't tolerate him: "Tell me quickly, I'm really busy. If I don't finish translating that article today, I'll be scolded to death!"

Principal Ke knew that Lao Pan's time was valuable, so he didn't tease him: "These two people speak good English. I brought them over to you. Isn't that a good thing?"

"Them? Doesn't your school only start teaching English in the second year of junior high? They don't look very old!"

"If you're not good enough, just translate for them. You keep saying time is precious, and you keep talking so much!" Principal Ke couldn't help but scold him.

Old Pan rushed inside and grabbed two books: "You two come here, one book each, and each of you translate ten pages. If it passes, you can start translating right away!"

Yao Tongjia quickly took the book, handed one to Xiao Gengwu, and the two sat down at a table together, picked up the draft and pen, and began to translate.

Old Pan wasted no time and immediately started translating himself, ignoring even Principal Ke.

Principal Ke knew that Lao Pan was really busy, so he went to get a cup, poured four cups of water, put the cups in front of the two children, put one cup in front of Lao Pan, and drank one cup himself.

After finishing his water, Principal Ke picked up a book and started reading. He planned to wait for the two younger students, and if their translation was not up to standard, he would take them both home to stay for the night.

If they pass the test, they can accompany Lao Pan for a day of translation, which can also reduce Lao Pan's workload. However, he thinks Lao Pan will most likely keep the two children.

Don't ask why, it's just intuition. He's always relied on intuition to get by.

When Principal Ke had read about twenty pages, he heard Old Pan exclaim in surprise, "You're quite something, kid! You're fast enough. Keep translating this book and see if you can finish it today or tomorrow."

Principal Ke put down his book: "If you want to keep this kid, then I'll go back. You'll be responsible for their meals and lodging. Old Tan and I will pick them up tomorrow afternoon."

Old Pan beamed with joy: "Don't worry, I wouldn't let them go hungry. I'll go and ask someone to cook two more meals right now. Thank you, Lao Ke. With one more person helping out, I can finally get a good night's sleep these next couple of days!"

Principal Ke didn't say anything, but patted Lao Pan on the shoulder and said to Xiao Gengwu and Yao Tongjia, "You two, stay here with Lao Pan tonight. Don't worry about food, Lao Pan will take care of it."

"I'll pick you up tomorrow afternoon. Don't go out unless you have to; it's not very safe outside right now!"

Yao Tongjia nodded repeatedly: "Don't worry, Principal, we'll definitely let you know when we get out!"

Principal Ke: "..." Did he not hear what I said?

"If possible, it's best not to go out. If you must go out, do it during the day. When you go out, have Lao Pan give you a work badge. You don't have any identification on you, so you can't be kept at home!"

Only then did Yao Tongjia realize that she hadn't been able to get the certificate: "Okay, Principal, I understand!"

After Principal Ke left, Yao Tongjia handed the translated manuscript to Lao Pan: "I've finished translating it, take a look!"

Old Pan read the manuscript and became more and more excited: "Not bad! Not bad! Keep translating. I'll get you a new notebook. Copy this content here and continue translating. This book isn't thick. Stay up a little late tonight and try to finish translating it by tomorrow!"

Old Pan felt a huge weight lifted off his shoulders. He could finally go to bed early tonight. Waaah, he hadn't had a good night's sleep in so many days!

Xiao Gengwu and Yao Tongjia had no objections and sat down to continue translating. The only sound in the room was the rustling of writing.

As night fell, a middle-aged woman carrying a lunchbox called out, "Old Pan, time to eat!"

Old Pan patted his head and said, "Sis, these two are translation talents that Lao Ke sent me. I forgot to ask you to cook two more servings of rice. Can you cook two more servings?"

Sister Pan glared at Old Pan: "I knew you'd forget even your parents when you start translating. Let Miss Xiao eat this lunch first!"

Yao Tongjia quickly waved her hand: "I'm not hungry yet, you can let Uncle Pan eat first!"

These words immediately made Sister Pan laugh so hard she couldn't stand up straight: "Uncle Pan? You look so old!"

Yao Tongjia: "......" They can all just call him Lao Pan, so why is he laughing like this when I call him Uncle Pan?

Old Pan said seriously, "Young lady, just call me uncle, please don't call me grandpa. I'm only 25 years old and not married yet!"

Yao Tongjia: "......" Your hair has turned into a receding hairline, and you're telling me you're 25? Who would believe that?

Yao Tongjia's gaze made Sister Pan laugh so hard she clutched her stomach: "Look at you, staying up all night every day, you've lost all your hair, now look like an old man, let's see who would still marry you!"

By the time the three of them finished eating, it was already eight o'clock. This was the latest dinner Yao Tongjia had ever had. Sister Pan came over and called to Yao Tongjia, "Tonight you'll sleep with my daughter, and your partner can sleep with Lao Pan."

Speaking of Lao Pan, Sister Pan's lips curled up again, probably because she remembered the phrase "Uncle Pan" from that afternoon.

Yao Tongjia was about to leave when Lao Pan quickly tried to stop her: "How many pages are you going to translate? Why don't you translate another ten pages before you go? Can you finish translating by tomorrow?"

Before Yao Tongjia could speak, Sister Pan quickly pulled her aside: "If you want to stay up all night, then stay up all night yourself. Do you think other young girls can do the same? What if they lose all their hair? What are you going to do with them?"

Old Pan: "..." Imagine if that young girl had a receding hairline, the scene would be too shocking to look at, so he could only let the young girl leave!

He reached out his claws to Xiao Gengwu, whose eyes were still on Yao Tongjia. He handed the notebook in his hand to Lao Pan, who took the notebook in confusion and immediately exclaimed in surprise.
