Chapter 36 Finding a Job

The current school weekend is a day and a half holiday, which is Saturday afternoon and Sunday. Yao Tongjia and her classmates take a bus on Saturday afternoon and don't get home until evening.

To ensure they weren't late on Mondays, they would take the afternoon bus back to the county at the latest on Sundays. To ensure they got back to school on time, Yao's mother would go to the vegetable garden to pick vegetables after lunch.

Yao Tongjia went to pick vegetables with her mother. While picking, she took a few plants with soil with her and secretly hid them in her spatial storage.

These days, vegetables are so scarce in the county that even money can't buy them. She's eaten wilted, dry vegetables many times, and she just can't stand it anymore.

She decided to put the vegetables in the space to see if she could grow them successfully. If she could, at least having vegetables wouldn't be a problem.

It's just that she came in such a hurry this time. Otherwise, if she had bought some things in the village, she could have bought as much as she wanted, and the prices would have been cheaper. She would have also made the villagers grateful to her.

Xiao Yan was originally going to go to the county with them, but just before they were about to leave, a patient who had fallen into a coma arrived, and Xiao Yan had no choice but to deal with him.

When they returned to the county, they gave Grandma Huang a large basket of vegetables, but she declined, saying, "You'll be staying here for another month, so keep them for yourselves!"

Yao Tongjia put it directly in the kitchen: "My mom and my master prepared this especially for you. Just keep it. Vegetables are not rare in the countryside. They are everywhere. It's just that my home is far away. Otherwise, I could have provided you with all the vegetables you need."

Seeing that Yao Tongjia had said so, Grandma Huang accepted: "Then Grandma thanks you. Come over tonight for vegetable soup, and I'll make vegetable and pork soup."

When they came up this time, Yao's mother brought them some dry food, but Yao Tongjia refused, saying, "My mother cooked some flatbread for us, and we'll eat flatbread tonight. There's no need to trouble you, Grandma."

"That's perfect. I'll make vegetable soup, which you can eat with your dry rations. If you're not coming to eat, just take the basket of vegetables with you!"

These words left Yao Tongjia with no choice but to nod: "Then Grandma, just prepare a small bowl for each of us, don't cook too much!"

Grandma Huang nodded in agreement. Seeing the fresh, juicy vegetables really put her in a good mood, and a rare smile appeared on her face!

Back in their room, Yao Tongjia saw Xiao Gengwu engrossed in translating again, while Yao Tongxu, afraid of disturbing Xiao-ge, was also reading a book.

Seeing her sister return, she quickly went over to her and said, "Sis, I'd like to translate too. Can you call me?"

Yao Tongjia knew that Yao Tongxu was feeling a bit disappointed. They were twins, but his older sister was already earning money while he was still spending it, so it was understandable that he felt down.

Yao Tongjia pulled him to sit on her bed: "Of course I'm happy that you're willing to learn English. Don't we have English classes? Right now, it's just the basics. You can start by memorizing words every day, and if you have extra time, I'll arrange other content for you to learn."

"Don't compare yourself to Brother Xiao. He's blessed with natural talent. His memory is exceptional, so he doesn't need to study much to get better grades than us who study hard."

"Maybe what your sister is saying will dampen your enthusiasm, but that's just the truth!"

"Then why is your English so good too? And why don't you dare let your mother know that you also do translation?" Yao Tongxu asked curiously.

Yao Tongjia couldn't say that she had studied in her previous life, so she could only lie: "I studied with the people who were sent down to the countryside from our village before. I was afraid that my mother would think I was disobedient, so I didn't dare to tell her."

"Brother Xiao is talented, and I learned in advance. It's not surprising that we can translate. If you want to translate, learn first. Anyway, we both make money, so don't worry about this."

After his sister said that, Yao Tongxu put aside his little temper. He was a bit of a careless person, and his temper came and went quickly, so he went back to continue reading.

Yao Tongxu went back to read, but Xiao Gengwu came over to see Yao Tongjia. He saw that she seemed to be resting with her eyes closed, so he sat down next to her, as if he was protecting her.

Yao Tongjia had actually run into the space to grow vegetables. Sensing someone beside her, she quickly opened her eyes and, seeing Xiao Gengwu, felt relieved: "Aren't you going to translate anymore?"

Xiao Gengwu seemed very tired, and leaned his head on Yao Tongjia's shoulder: "Tired!"

Yao Tongjia noticed that he looked exhausted: "Anyway, Uncle Pan won't rush us, so why are you working so hard?"

"You want to buy a house?" Xiao Gengwu answered irrelevantly.

"I want to buy a house. It's a bit better for my master to work as a village doctor, but during the busy farming season, he has to run around helping to treat people, which is quite tiring. But my mother has to work in the fields every day, which is too hard!"

"It's too much to ask of her, a college student, to work in the fields like this!"

Xiao Gengwu gave a soft "hmm" and after a long pause, said, "Our current translation salaries are enough to support them, but they must feel very uncomfortable relying on us for support."

"Unless we find them jobs, but we don't have that capability right now. Besides, didn't they study English before? Can they translate?"

These words made Yao Tongjia's eyes light up: "I think I heard that they are studying Russian. I don't know their level of study, or whether they can translate. I also wonder if Uncle Pan has any Russian documents that need to be translated?"

“I don’t know either. You can write a letter explaining the situation. Even if he doesn’t have it, maybe someone he knows needs it. Anyway, the translation field is relatively small, and everyone knows each other.”

These words excited Yao Tongjia: "Okay, I'll go write the letter right now!"

Seeing Yao Tongjia pick up a pen and start writing, Xiao Gengwu lay down on Yao Tongjia's bed and smelled a very pleasant scent, a unique scent emanating from Yao Tongjia.

That scent could calm one's mind and slow down his racing thoughts, just like now, as he lay on Yao Tongjia's bed, falling asleep without realizing it.

When Yao Tongjia finished writing the letter and turned around, she saw that Xiao Gengwu was already asleep. Only his upper body was on the bed, while his lower body was still on the floor, making the bed look small and the person look huge.

Yao Tongjia knew he had been translating all day, and even in the car he hadn't put down his book. She figured he was really tired, so she didn't move him, but just covered his stomach with a blanket.

Looking at the sky, she figured Grandma Huang was cooking, so she tiptoed in and out of the doorway to check on her in the kitchen.

When Grandma Huang saw Yao Tongjia arrive, she assumed she was there to pick up something and quickly said, "I'll be done soon, just wait a moment!"

Yao Tongjia went over to help chop vegetables: "No rush, I just came out for a walk. It's already dark outside, so I didn't dare to go out. I just came here to take a look."

Knowing that Yao Tongjia wasn't hungry, Grandma Huang slowed down: "That's good. Cooking should be done slowly to make it taste good. If you eat it in a hurry, it won't taste the same."

Yao Tongjia rarely saw Grandma Huang talk so much: "Grandma, are you in a good mood today?"

Grandma Huang beamed, "I received a letter from my grandson today. He said he wants to come see me! Of course I'm happy!"
