He had never really cared much about his two daughters, and with his mother constantly badmouthing them to him, he genuinely couldn't bring himself to like them.
Since he changed wives, he really can't stand seeing his two daughters. Seeing them makes him very uncomfortable. He actually feels a bit guilty, and this guilt sometimes torments him.
Seeing his two daughters would trigger his extreme guilt. He was unwilling to face them, so he ignored them and paid no attention to their emaciated appearance and how their eyes were practically popping out of their sockets!
He leaves work on time whenever he's not on a mission, and before he even enters the house, he hears laughter coming from the yard, which makes him smile genuinely too.
This smile was something he had only seen when he had just married his wife and before his mother came to help him during his postpartum period. After his mother arrived, he only saw it now!
Every day, his new wife would play with their son, and seeing his mother talking about his son's funny stories, his heart was filled with warmth. How wonderful it would be if life could continue like this forever!
But when the child was six months old, he discovered that his wife was subtly trying to find out about things in the military region. What terrified him even more was that one time he had a black object that he didn't recognize on him.
He touched the thing outside, but his vigilance told him that he absolutely could not take it out in public, or he would be in big trouble if others saw it.
When he got home, he took it to his wife and asked, "Did you put this in my pocket?"
The wife, unconcerned, continued to tease the child: "Yes, I put it there. From now on, you must carry it with you whenever you go out!"
"What is this? Why do I have to carry it with me?"
His wife smiled gently at him and said, "Don't worry about what it is or why. Just bring it!"
Although his wife spoke gently with a smile, he felt a chill run down his spine: "What, what are you going to do?"
The wife, however, ripped off her mask: "Do you even have the right to ask?"
The regimental commander was shocked. He thought her face was really disfigured, but it turned out that she had just added a layer of skin. He thought that this person was sincere to her, but it turned out that it was all an illusion!
Was his wife really dead? He had only given her a light push, how could she have died? He cried out in terror, "Who are you?"
By this time, he belatedly realized that something was wrong; he had fallen into a trap and was trapped, even though he had previously enjoyed this cage!
The woman sneered, "It's too late for you to ask this now. I am your wife. Otherwise, would you dare to go around saying that you killed your wife?"
"I didn't kill her. I just gave her a light push. She definitely wouldn't have died!"
The woman crossed her arms and said, "It was just the two of us. If you didn't kill her, who else could it be? Why would I kill her? Wasn't it because you were afraid of ruining your future that you killed her?"
The regimental commander felt a chill run through his body. He closed his eyes; he was finished!
The woman advised him, "This is something only the two of us know. As long as you behave, I won't tell anyone else. You don't need to do anything now, just keep that thing on your person!"
The regimental commander struggled for a moment, then gave up. He really couldn't bear to give up his future. Of course, he knew that such a thing would be exposed sooner or later, but he could delay it for as long as possible!
So he took that black thing with him every day when he went out. Sometimes, to prevent others from seeing it, he even listened to the woman and stuck it inside his crotch!
He had no other options left, but he was still very curious as to why this woman had such a good relationship with his mother.
He observed for a while and then realized that this woman didn't care about his salary at all. Not only did his mother keep all of his salary, but this woman also paid for all the household expenses.
He thought of his ex-wife, and his heart felt like it was being gnawed at by ants. He realized he had really made a mistake; he should have let his wife manage his salary, and perhaps there wouldn't have been so many conflicts.
He closed his eyes. Where did this woman get her money? And was that son really his? The happy days of the past were gone forever. Without the cover of happiness, he saw much more.
The old woman was really harsh on her daughters. Once, he found his daughters shivering from the cold. He had a rare fatherly heart and went to his daughters' room to get them a piece of clothing.
Then he searched the entire room where his daughter lived, but there wasn't a single thick coat in sight. Yet he remembered that there used to be, as his previous wife had sewed clothes for his daughter.
He asked his eldest daughter, who shrank back slightly: "Grandma sent the clothes back to our hometown, saying that we are all lowly sluts and don't deserve to wear thick clothes!"
The regimental commander's heart clenched. He pretended not to know and went out to ask his mother, "Mother, it's getting cold. Where are the warm clothes for our two daughters?"
"Thick clothes? I don't know about this. It's not my business. Go ask those two sluts where they threw the clothes!"
Seeing his mother's self-righteous demeanor, he recalled his wife's past complaints to him, but every time he asked his mother, she would answer him without changing her expression.
Then he believed it, went home and scolded his wife. His wife must have felt really wronged at that time!
He shook his head: "If I can't find it, I can't find it. Mother, give me some money and I'll go buy some for the children. The weather is getting colder and colder; they can't get by without warm clothes!"
The old woman immediately jumped up: "What did you say? Buy clothes? Those two sluts don't deserve new clothes! I have no money, not a single penny!"
The money that had gone into her pocket was nowhere to be found. The regimental commander hadn't expected his mother to react this way, but he still insisted, "Give me some money!"
But his mother ignored him completely and closed the door. He felt a chill in his heart. He couldn't even come up with the money he earned. Was it true that his wife had said his mother wasn't feeding them?
He turned around dejectedly and saw the woman standing at the doorway with her arms crossed, watching the commotion. He was particularly struck by her ambiguous smile, which made him feel extremely stifled.
Why is it that no matter how hard I work, things never seem normal at home? Actually, they were normal. Before my mother came, the house was like a magnet, drawing him home every day!
But now, he has personally killed and buried that wife who was so devoted to him. He is truly worse than a pig or a dog!
The woman tempted him: "I have money here, do you want it?"
The regimental commander asked warily, "What are the conditions?"
The woman laughed, but the burning sensation on her face made her look ferocious: "Of course, it's in exchange for gathering some information. I can give you the money first!"
Since I'm already in the mud pit, even if I come out I'll be covered in mud anyway, so what does it matter if there's more mud or less?
The regimental commander quickly agreed to the woman's suggestion, and then began to sell information, even dragging down those of his weaker willpower!
