Chapter 18 A Mother and Daughter Passing By
Yan Hu ran a few steps but didn't hear anyone following. He turned around and saw that the little dumpling was still peering through the door.
Yan Hu ran back and nudged her: "Let's go."
"oh oh."
Sheng Sheng finally came to her senses, took one last reluctant look at her beautiful aunt, and stood up.
Just then, Consort Rong seemed to sense something and suddenly turned around and glanced to the side.
Sheng Sheng followed Yan Hu toward the back door. Her light blue skirt twirled with her movements, gently brushing against the door frame and leaving a pretty blue floral pattern.
Consort Rong only saw a fleeting glimpse of pale blue, unable to make it out clearly.
She stared at the spot where the blue light disappeared, feeling as if she had missed something, and a sense of emptiness filled her heart.
Seeing her staring blankly into space, Lü Ping asked, "Your Highness, what's wrong?"
Consort Rong looked for two more seconds, but the place was already empty.
Consort Rong smiled and continued walking forward: "It's nothing, let's go."
The palanquin was lifted up, and the pearl tassels on the curtain swayed, just like the graceful pale blue color from before.
Consort Rong was unaware that the blue figure was the one she longed for day and night.
Sheng Sheng had no idea that the beautiful woman was the mother she longed for.
Sheng Sheng followed Yan Hu out through the back door of the side hall. Yan Hu scouted ahead. There weren't as many palace servants in Yuqing Palace as in other palaces, so it was easy to avoid them. The two little ones slipped out of the small door of Yuqing Palace without much trouble.
The oriole will be back in an hour at most, which is a bit of a rush. Fortunately, Jingyue Pavilion is not far from Yuqing Palace. Just follow the road and turn two corners, and you'll arrive in less than a quarter of an hour.
Pei Ji, like Xie Yunchuan, would attend morning classes at Wenhua Hall, and after class at noon, he would stay in his own courtyard.
I heard that when Pei Ji first arrived, a small palace was originally arranged for him, but after staying for two days, Pei Ji asked to stay in this small courtyard next to the bamboo forest.
Jingyue Pavilion was secluded and uninhabited for many years, but Pei Ji did not mind. After the palace sent people to make some simple repairs, Pei Ji moved in.
Recently, Sheng Sheng has been pondering what Yan Hu had told her before, and she would also ask Huang Ying and Xie Yunchuan about other things. Although her little brain still only vaguely understands, Sheng Sheng roughly understands that Pei Ji's choice might be a strategic retreat.
The bamboo leaves have turned a few more yellow, but they don't look desolate.
As soon as Sheng Sheng approached Jingyue Pavilion, Afu, who was cooking under the small shed on the right side of the courtyard, spotted her.
Afu was surprised at first, then his expression turned strange, and he immediately ran into the house to find Pei Ji.
Pei Ji was sitting at the table studying when he heard the noise. He looked up and asked softly, "What's wrong?"
Ah Fu was still holding the spatula he was using to cook, with two mushroom slices still on it: "Grandpa, Grandpa, that thing is here, that thing is here!"
"That one?" Pei Ji frowned. "Which one?"
"It's that one, the one from that day." Afu gestured excitedly, the spatula flying everywhere, "That cute little girl in the pale yellow dress!"
Pei Ji paused, putting down the book in his hand: "Princess?"
“Ah, right, that princess.” Afu scratched his head and muttered to himself, “Although I don’t know what kind of princess she is, I’ve never heard of the Emperor of Yu adopting any commoner’s daughter.”
"Brother Bamboo, may Shengsheng come in?"
Pei Ji was pondering why the princess had come when a clear female voice came from the doorway.
Afu glanced at the doorway, then turned back to ask Pei Ji what he meant.
Pei Ji stood up, walked into the courtyard, and saw the little dumpling he had seen not long ago peeking out from behind the courtyard gate, looking at him expectantly.
Seeing him come out, the little dumpling's eyes lit up, and she hopped to the door, wanting to come over, but then realized he hadn't agreed yet, so she took a step back: "Brother!"
Pei Ji pursed his lips. The little dumpling was a bit plumper than the last time he saw it, and its face was also more rosy.
What remains unchanged is the little dumpling's bright and slightly shy smile.
Pei Ji paused, then gave a faint smile: "Princess?"
She was pleased to receive a response: "Brother Bamboo."
"Come in, it's chilly outside."
Pei Ji led the little dumpling into the house, while Yan Hu lay at the doorway, dutifully keeping watch.
Although there is no wind that requires it to be released.
Pei Ji wiped a stool with a handkerchief and picked up the little dumpling, saying, "My humble abode is simple; please don't find it offensive, Princess."
"How could that be? Sheng Sheng thinks this place is great."
The little dumpling rested its chin on its hands, its short legs not touching the ground, dangling in the air and swaying back and forth, its eyes squinting with laughter.
Pei Ji poured her a glass of water: "I haven't thanked the princess for saving my life last time. If it weren't for the princess's help, I don't know how long I would have been stuck in that pit."
"No need to thank me, no need to thank me." Sheng Sheng waved her hand and said earnestly, "Actually, I didn't do anything. Didn't Brother Afu arrive soon?"
Hearing her address to Afu, a hint of surprise flashed in Pei Ji's eyes, but he quickly concealed it.
"Then, what brings the princess to see me?"
Sheng Sheng was taken aback, blinked, and asked nervously, "Did Sheng Sheng disturb her brother?"
Pei Ji smiled and shook his head: "How could that be? After school, I just stay in my room studying and have nothing else to do. It's more interesting that the princess came to see me."
"Really?" The little dumpling was visibly happy.
The little dumpling's eyes sparkled when she smiled, and her dimples appeared. Pei Ji hadn't seen such an innocent smile in a long time. He looked at the smile quietly for a while and said, "Hmm."
The little dumpling laughed even more happily.
Pei Ji disliked socializing, and Sheng Sheng didn't know what to talk to him about for a while, so the two sat in silence for a while.
It was Afu who brought over the food, breaking the silence.
"Young master, dinner is ready!"
A plate of stir-fried greens and a plate of stir-fried mushrooms and carrots were the dinner at Jingyuexuan.
If it were a child from the past, seeing this dish would only make them think it was plentiful.
Having been pampered by Xie Yunchuan in Yuqing Palace for a while, and knowing that Pei Ji was a prince from another country, the little dumpling's food shouldn't have been so bland.
Sheng Sheng frowned: "Brother Bamboo, is this all you're going to eat?"
Brother Bamboo?
Pei Ji and A Fu both looked puzzled, and it took Pei Ji several seconds to accept the title.
Ah Fu was a talkative person and couldn't stop talking: "Sigh, it's still that group..."
“Afu.” Pei Ji interrupted him, set out bowls and chopsticks for Sheng Sheng, and said, “His Majesty is benevolent and has not mistreated me. The things sent by the Imperial Household Department should be the same as those sent by other masters.”
Sheng Sheng didn't realize the deeper meaning in Pei Ji's words, and only said, "No way, they're definitely lying to you. Even Sheng Sheng gets to eat lots of delicious food!"
Pei Ji raised an eyebrow: "Is that so?"
Pei Ji didn't seem to care much about these things, and slowly served Sheng Sheng some food, saying, "Princess, please don't mind."
