Chapter 497 Extra Chapter 3: The Puppy's Guardianship Through Past and Present Lives 1
Yan Hu is an ordinary little dog.
Ordinary tan fur, ordinary size, ordinary long tail.
He wasn't even considered one of the strongest among his siblings.
He was born into a farming family. He was so ordinary that he had nothing special about him and was not qualified to be a guard for the villagers.
So the family he was born didn't keep him; they took him and several other weaker infants to give to other villagers.
But because he was plain-looking and not cute at all, he was the last one to be sent away, to the old widower, Old Man Mo, at the end of the village.
Old Mo was nearly sixty years old and lived alone. He was very eccentric and loved to drink. After leaving Yan Hu behind, he would often get drunk and inexplicably take his anger out on Yan Hu, punching and kicking him.
As a cub, Xiao Yanhu initially thought it was because he had done something wrong. His innate affinity for humans prevented him from having any negative emotions towards Old Man Mo. Even when Old Man Mo refused to feed him and kicked and hit him, he silently endured it and then doubted himself.
Is it because I am not good-looking and not likable, and I do not have a strong body to guard the house for my master that he does not like me?
Yan Hu didn't even have a name at first; Old Man Mo always called him "dead beast" or "living beast."
As Yan Hu grew up, he became accustomed to Old Man Mo's behavior, learned to avoid him, and grew used to hunger.
However, there was a very pretty little girl. Yan Hu knew she was from the Xie family at the edge of the village. Sometimes when the little girl saw him, she would feed him something.
The village was very poor. Although the little girl was very much loved by her family, she did not want to cause trouble for them by wanting to feed him. So the food she fed him was all saved from her own meals.
She would also bandage his wounds with heartache when she saw them.
The young girl couldn't stand how Old Man Mo always treated her. She once mentioned wanting to buy him from Old Man Mo, but her deep-rooted loyalty prevented her from escaping the house.
Before long, Yan Hu realized that he hadn't seen the always smiling little girl for a long time.
He misses her a little.
Old Mo only fed Yan Hu occasionally when he remembered. This time, Yan Hu had been hungry for three days and finally got to be fed by Old Mo.
But he didn't eat it; instead, he gave the food to the other dogs in the village. In return, he received the news that Xie's son had passed the imperial examination and was now being appointed by the emperor as a county magistrate in the city, and that his whole family had moved there.
So she went off to live a better life.
That's great.
He thought happily.
No one fed Yan Hu from time to time until five years later when Old Mo got drunk and fell into a ditch and died unexpectedly, and Yan Hu became a stray dog.
He has no home anymore.
He was abandoned when he was still a cub, and now he has no home.
He didn't want to try his luck with other people's homes anymore; he knew he wouldn't be liked.
Yan Hu became a stray dog.
Actually, it's not much different from before. Anyway, when Old Mo was around, he was always hungry and drank river water.
Yan Hu thought to himself, he was too ordinary, no one liked him, and even his nominal master was dead.
He may be destined to be a lonely stray dog.
But then the little girl he longed for reappeared.
One morning, the girl found him sleeping in a haystack. She gently touched his head with her warm hand. Yan Hu saw her smiling tenderly and softly asked him, "What are you doing here? I've been looking for you everywhere."
The little girl from back then has grown up into a graceful young woman. She was already incredibly beautiful as a child, and now she's even more stunning.
Yan Hu recognized her immediately; her scent seemed to be etched into his very bones.
Yan Hu shook his body in a daze. He wasn't fully awake yet, but his puppy instincts and his affection for the girl in his heart had already made him wag his tail.
The girl smiled at him and touched his wagging tail. Her scent was as pleasant as ever. Yan Hu couldn't resist his affection and licked her cheek.
The girl giggled and then said, "Want to come home with me this time?"
Yan Hu felt that she was glowing.
This time, Yan Hu didn't refuse and went home with her.
Then he got his own name, Yan Hu.
Yan Hu was taken back to the city by the girl, and they rode in a carriage covered with blue cloth.
The cart wheels made a regular clattering sound as they rolled over the bluestone pavement, unlike the bumpy dirt roads in the village.
The carriage was lined with soft cushions, and in the corner sat a plate of glistening dried meat. The girl picked up a piece and held it to his lips, her voice as soft as cotton: "Try it, it's freshly baked in the kitchen, much better than the bones you used to gnaw on."
Yan Hu sniffed cautiously, the warm aroma of meat filling his nostrils. He hesitated for a moment, but he was so hungry that he couldn't resist the temptation and gently took a piece of meat and began to chew.
The crispy, fragrant taste melted on his tongue. This was the most delicious thing he had ever eaten in his life. He ate it quickly, but dared not wolf it down, for fear of upsetting the girl.
The girl couldn't help but laugh at his appearance, and then rubbed his yellowish-brown fur with her fingertips: "Eat slowly, Yan Hu, you'll have plenty to eat every day from now on."
Yan Hu.
He kept repeating those two words in his head.
This is his name; he has a name now.
They have a home now.
The carriage stopped in front of a house with blue bricks and gray tiles. A copper ring hung on the vermilion gate, and the words "Xie Mansion" were inscribed on the lintel.
Upon seeing the young woman, the gatekeeper immediately bowed and greeted her, "Miss is back."
Yan Hu followed the girl into the courtyard, where he saw an exquisite scene he had never seen before.
He instinctively pulled his paws back, afraid that his muddy feet would soil the clean stone path in the yard.
The girl seemed to see through his unease, took the cloth rope temporarily tied around his neck, and gently comforted him: "Don't be afraid, Yan Hu, this will be your home from now on."
The girl led him to her courtyard, where a cozy little nest had been beautifully decorated in one corner.
There was also a soft cotton quilt and a delicate bowl in the little nest.
Yan Hu looked at the girl with a puzzled expression, tilting his head.
The girl smiled and explained, "I wanted to bring you home five years ago, have you forgotten?"
Yan Hu was taken aback.
It turns out this was something she had prepared long ago.
It was prepared for herself.
Yan Hu now has a home; a beautiful young woman took him home.
The girl's name was Xie Yunsheng.
