Chapter Seventeen Wanwan

Seeing that Wen Lan was anxious, Mr. Lu stopped trying to appease her: "Alright, alright, I know you feel sorry for him. I promise, I promise I won't be so impulsive in the future, okay? He's my son too, of course I feel sorry for him. I'll definitely get along well with him in the future, so don't worry about it, okay!"

"You said it yourself, so no matter what, you must never hit him again!" Wen Lan was still bothered by the fact that Lu's father had hit him today.

"Yes, yes, I promise, I promise!" Mr. Lu was exasperated with Wen Lan. To prevent her from nagging endlessly, he could only nod and agree repeatedly.

On Saturday, Lu Ziyin got up early, tidied herself up, went to the kitchen to make a pumpkin porridge and a fried egg roll, carefully packed them in a thermal container, and then went out.

City Hospital, Psychiatry Department, sixth floor.

Lu Ziyin, carrying a lunchbox, greeted a passing nurse and then pushed open the door to the ward.

The ward was large, but there was only one patient inside.

The ward was very empty. Apart from a bed, everything else that might pose a danger had been removed, and even the windows were surrounded by thick iron bars.

A woman lay on the hospital bed, on her side, looking out the window, seemingly oblivious to the sounds behind her.

Lu Ziyin placed the lunchbox on the bedside table, gently touched the woman lying on the bed, and whispered, "Mom, I've come to see you. It's me, Ziyin."

The woman didn't move, still quietly gazing out the window. A flicker of pain crossed Lu Ziyin's eyes. He didn't disturb her further, but instead helped her set up the movable table beside the bed.

"Mom, I made your favorite pumpkin porridge and egg rolls. They're all your favorite foods, and I made them myself. Would you like to have some?" Lu Ziyin opened the lunchbox, placed it on the table, and looked at the woman's pale face as she spoke gently.

The woman remained unresponsive, not even sparing Lu Ziyin a glance.

"Knock knock knock..." A knocking sound rang out on the door.

The nurse came in and, seeing Lu Ziyin, smiled. "Ziyin's come to see her mother again..."

"Um, Nurse Liu, how is my mother?" Lu Ziyin looked up and managed a weak smile.

"She's doing quite well. There haven't been any major mood swings lately, she's just a bit withdrawn." The nurse checked on the woman's mental state as usual, and when she saw the breakfast on the table, she was somewhat surprised: "Did you make this, Ziyin?"

Lu Ziyin watched the nurse examine the woman's body. The woman's face was expressionless, but her eyes were filled with heartache. "Yes, I made it. I wanted to bring it to my mother to try, but she ignored me."

The nurse saw Lu Ziyin's expression and immediately understood. She smiled, bent down to help the woman sit up, placed a spoon in her hand, and whispered, "Wanwan, be good, let's eat, okay?"

The nurse's words, "Wanwan," seemed to flip a switch on the woman. Her expression changed instantly, her empty eyes gradually brightened, and her pale lips parted slightly, her soft voice echoing in the ward: "Wanwan, eat, eat..."

"Ziyin, you have to say it like that for your mother to move!" The nurse brought the porridge to the woman, gave her a few more careful instructions, and then left the ward.

Looking at the dazed woman in front of her, Lu Ziyin's heart sank to the bottom. A tear slowly rolled down her cheek, past her nose, and onto her lips, tasting salty...

The woman who used to smile and tease him in his memory seemed to have vanished like a bubble; it felt like he could never find his mother again…

The two-day weekend passed in a flash, and a new school week began.

On Monday, the Chinese teacher of Class 10 arrived at the classroom early and went to the door to catch the late students one by one. Half of the boys in Class 10 were late. Of the three classes on the entire sixth floor, Class 10 had the most people at the door.

A dense row of boys stood there, all of them late!

Lu Ziyin, carrying her empty schoolbag, swayed as she walked to the sixth floor. She looked up and saw Tang Zhizhou standing outside. Lu Ziyin blinked, then turned to leave.

Before he could even lift his foot, Tang Zhizhou's voice rang out: "Teacher, Lu Ziyin is late too! He's trying to run away! Look!"

Damn it!

"Lu Ziyin, you stop right there!" The Chinese teacher looked towards the stairwell, and in a flash, she was in front of Lu Ziyin, grabbing his schoolbag with a strong pull. "You brat, trying to run away! You come here and stand with them!"

There's no way to escape now...

Lu Ziyin slowly walked over to Tang Zhizhou and stood down next to him. After giving Tang Zhizhou a serious look of "consolation," she joined the "army" of students in Class 10 who were being punished by standing.

"Look at you all! Every Monday you're late! Do you even know what Monday is? It's the start of the week! And yet you dare to be late! I used to be kind and didn't hold it against you, but now I'm going to stand up to you! I want to see if you're any worse at being late, or if I'm any better at catching you late!" The Chinese teacher stood with her hands on her hips, looking at the row of students in front of her, furious!

"Stand up straight, all of you! I'll see who dares to slack off. If I catch them, they'll have to copy the text ten times!"

Forced to stand guard at the classroom door for twenty minutes, the Chinese teacher finally had a change of heart and allowed them into the classroom. The boys rushed into the classroom, ignoring the girls' laughter, quickly put down their bags, and got busy eating breakfast or copying homework.
