Chapter 731: An ugly daughter-in-law must meet her parents-in-law
Ji Chuan was silent for two seconds and replied, "She is my girlfriend and future marriage partner. It's not normal for her to move in."
His mother glanced at him sternly and lowered her voice, saying, "If you insist on dating her, I won't stop you, but marriage is no small matter. You must not let your emotions get in the way. Don't make the decision on your own for such a big matter."
Ji Chuan's eyes darkened, and he spoke in a clear and decisive tone, "I know how to handle my lifelong affairs, so you don't have to worry about it."
His mother visibly choked and said slowly, "Yes, you always have your own opinions. You don't have to take me, your mother, seriously."
"Your temper and personality are all like your father's. You and your son both have your own ideas. I never dreamed that our family would be divided to this extent."
As she spoke, her eyes began to turn red and she lowered her head to wipe away her tears with a tissue.
Ji Chuan leaned back in his chair, sighed quietly, then turned his head and looked towards the kitchen. Xu Hui was standing in the kitchen. The two of them were looking at each other through the glass door of the kitchen.
"Call her out, I have something to ask her."
His mother wiped away her tears and suddenly spoke.
Ji Chuan's voice was filled with defensiveness. "What do you want to ask her?"
Mrs. Ji turned to look at her son, her eyes not without disappointment, "Don't you consider her as a marriage partner? As a mother-in-law, can't I even ask about her basic situation?"
Ji Chuan could sense some relief in her voice, but considering what her mother had done to Xu Hui before, he said, "Whatever you want to ask, I can tell you."
Mrs. Ji: "An ugly daughter-in-law has to meet her parents-in-law. I don't beat her or scold her. What are you afraid of? Are you asking her to hide from me forever?"
Ji Chuan hesitated for a few seconds, and before standing up, he reminded her again: "She is your future daughter-in-law, and this will not change."
He was reminding his mother to be careful with her words.
Mrs. Ji suppressed her anger for the time being and said nothing.
Ji Chuan came to the kitchen, took Xu Hui's hand, and said softly, "Let's go meet your mother-in-law."
After hearing what he said, Xu Hui felt a little relieved and came out with a glass of water and some fruit.
"aunt"
She handed the water cup and fruit plate to the table in front of Mrs. Ji and sat down next to Ji Chuan.
Mrs. Ji turned her head and said to Ji Chuan, "Take the food to the kitchen and heat it up."
Ji Chuan sat still and said, "No need, I'll eat when I'm hungry later."
Mrs. Ji glanced at their clasped hands and looked away.
"You two have been dating for a while now, but I know nothing about you except your name. Since we have time today, let's sit down and have a good chat. First, you can introduce your family situation."
After she finished speaking, she looked at Xu Hui's face.
Xu Hui exchanged a glance with Ji Chuan, then adjusted his breathing and said truthfully, "I'm from Hunan Province and have been in Beicheng for seven or eight years. My parents are both from the countryside and are still in my hometown. I have a grandfather, a younger brother, and a younger sister. My younger brother took the college entrance examination this year and was admitted to Hosei University, ranking first in his major. My younger sister is in junior high school and her academic performance is also excellent. I'm currently studying psychology at Minzu University and I hope to work in psychological counseling in the future."
Mrs. Ji: "Your parents farm at home. Can they afford to support three children to go to school?"
Her words hit a sore spot. Xu Hui paused, feeling her hand tighten, but she still spoke frankly, "I didn't have any education before. My father has been paralyzed in bed for many years, and my mother is not in good health either. She doesn't have much working ability. I came to Beicheng to work when I was 18."
His mother raised her eyes and gave her a deep look. The complex emotions in this look were hard for Xu Hui to discern. The next second, she heard Mrs. Ji repeat the question: "You started supporting the family at the age of 18?"
Xu Hui nodded.
The expression on Mrs. Ji's face changed visibly several times in a short period of time. Finally, she looked at her thoughtfully and asked, "What kind of work have you done?"
