Chapter 310 We Are Family
Xia Ningxi had a splitting headache and lay on the bed hugging a pillow for a while. In her drowsy state, she felt someone push open the door and walk in. When Xia Ningxi opened her eyes, she saw Chu Chu cautiously peeking out her head.
"Chu Chu, what brings you here?" Xia Ningxi's eyes softened.
Chu Chu asked, "Mommy, are you hungry? I brought you two grapes. Your brother said they're cooking in the kitchen and it'll be ready soon."
The little guy proudly handed the grapes in his hand to Xia Ningxi.
Xia Ningxi gently pulled Chu Chu into her arms and whispered, "Chu Chu is such a good girl."
"Is Mommy badly hurt?" Chu Chu asked worriedly.
Xia Ningxi said, "I'm fine, don't worry."
Chu Chu clung to Xia Ningxi like an adorable little kitten.
Xia Xingxing and Huo Yuan also came to the room one after another to check on Xia Ningxi. The three little ones surrounded Xia Ningxi, each looking more worried than the last.
Xia Ningxi comforted her for a while.
Xingxing asked, "Did Daddy cause Mommy's injury?"
Xia Ningxi said, "No."
"Mommy is lying," Xingxing said, not believing it.
Xia Ningxi said, "It really isn't."
"Then why did Mommy come back with Daddy? Didn't Daddy promise us we could always live in our own home?" Xingxing asked back.
Xia Ningxi said, "We can go back in a few days."
Xia Xingxing didn't actually believe what Xia Ningxi said. He felt that Xia Ningxi's injury must be related to Huo Nanxiao, so during dinner that night, Xia Xingxing kept staring fiercely at Huo Nanxiao.
Chu Chu and Xing Xing stood on the same side, their grape-sized eyes glaring fiercely at Huo Nanxiao.
Huo Yuan kept putting food on Xia Ningxi's plate, ignoring Huo Nanxiao.
Huo Nanxiao clearly sensed that the three little ones had a problem with him, but he didn't say anything. After finishing his meal, he took Huo Yuan and Xia Xingxing to take a bath, leaving Xia Chuchu alone at home.
Chu Chu felt a little sad, and as she watched Huo Nanxiao leave with his two brothers, a hint of disappointment flashed in her eyes.
"Chu Chu, what's wrong?" Xia Ningxi noticed that Chu Chu's expression was somewhat gloomy and asked curiously.
Xia Chuchu shook her head and said in a childish voice, "Mommy, I want to take a bath too."
Xia Ningxi then noticed that Huo Nanxiao had taken his two older brothers away, leaving Chu Chu alone. No wonder Chu Chu was sad.
"This guy, Chu Chu is also his daughter." Xia Ningxi couldn't help but mutter to herself as she led Xia Chu Chu upstairs.
Huo Nanxiao had already cleaned Huo Yuan and Xingxing up and changed them into two handsome outfits.
"Mommy, Chu Chu doesn't have any new clothes." Chu Chu said, holding Xia Ningxi's hand, feeling aggrieved.
Upon hearing this, Huo Yuan and Xingxing immediately sensed something was wrong and both looked at Huo Nanxiao.
Huo Nanxiao frowned. Xingxing and Huo Yuan were his sons, so it was only natural for him to prepare new clothes for them. Xia Chuchu was not his daughter, so why should he prepare new clothes for her?
Chu Chu asked, "Uncle, do you not have any money?"
Huo Nanxiao's lips twitched violently: "Yes."
"Then why don't I have any new clothes to wear?" Xia Chuchu asked back.
Huo Nanxiao: "Go take a shower first, and someone will bring your new clothes over in a little while."
How could a grown man be mocked by a little girl? How could he possibly be broke?
After Xia Chuchu and Xia Ningxi entered the bathroom, Huo Nanxiao immediately called the butler.
The housekeeper immediately sent someone to a nearby shopping mall to pick up the clothes, and the new clothes arrived just as Xia Chuchu finished her shower.
Xia Chuchu was overjoyed, and happily twirled around in front of Xia Ningxi in her new dress.
Huo Nanxiao smiled slightly when he saw Xia Chuchu smiling so happily.
Xia Xingxing, on the other hand, stood aside and looked coldly at Huo Nanxiao, but she still harbored a lot of resentment in her heart.
When it was time to rest at night, Xia Ningxi took Chu Chu back to the guest room, while Huo Nanxiao took his two sons back to the master bedroom.
The two sons were not sleeping either. They sat on the bed, staring at Huo Nanxiao with a sinister look in their eyes.
"Go to sleep," Huo Nanxiao said.
Xia Xingxing asked, "Daddy, why is Mommy injured?"
"I got hurt by accident," Huo Nanxiao replied.
Xia Xingxing said, "Don't try to lie to me. Did Mommy get hurt because of you?"
Huo Nanxiao's face hardened. He didn't want to lie to the child, so he admitted, "Yes."
"Why can't Daddy protect Mommy?" Xia Xingxing asked angrily.
Huo Nanxiao said, "I'm sorry, I'll be more careful in the future and won't let her get hurt again."
"Can I believe what Daddy says? Did Daddy spend the whole day with that Xia Wanwan, leaving my mommy all alone? Is that why my mommy was kidnapped by bad guys and got hurt?" Xia Xingxing questioned him.
Huo Nanxiao actually felt very guilty towards Xia Ningxi in this matter, knowing that everything Xia Ningxi had experienced was because of him.
Han Musen was the one who sent Xia Ningxi to prison back then, and now he is determined to take revenge. Xia Ningxi suffered an undeserved misfortune. If he had cared more about Xia Ningxi, perhaps she would not have been injured at all.
Huo Nanxiao said to Xingxing, "I was wrong about this. I will take better care of her in the future."
Xingxing said angrily, "Is it enough to just care a little more? Daddy, Mommy and I are your family. Your responsibility and obligation is to protect Mommy and me, but I feel like you don't care about us at all. If that's the case, why did you choose Mommy in the first place? Why did you give birth to us?"
Huo Nanxiao was stumped; for a moment, he didn't know how to answer Xingxing's question.
Xia Xingxing was disappointed and turned to the side, hugging the blanket: "Never mind, I have my mommy, it's okay if I don't have a daddy."
“Xingxing, I…” Huo Nanxiao didn’t know how to comfort him.
Xia Xingxing covered her head with the blanket, not wanting to pay attention to anyone.
Huo Nanxiao felt uneasy. He looked at Huo Yuan, who was still sitting by the bed, and said in a deep voice, "Yuan, do you also resent your father?"
Huo Yuan shook his head: "I don't hate Daddy."
Huo Nanxiao was somewhat pleased.
Huo Yuan: "But Daddy, you haven't answered your brother's question yet. If you don't like Mommy, why did you give birth to us in the first place? You could have been with Wanwan's Mommy, so why did you hurt our Mommy?"
The little guy's voice was calm but also tinged with confusion. Huo Yuan didn't really understand why Daddy couldn't love Mommy a little more.
"Daddy, we're clearly a family. If you don't want Mommy, do you also not want us?" Huo Yuan asked, enunciating each word clearly.
This last question completely stumped Huo Nanxiao.
He held Huo Yuan in his arms without answering.
Huo Yuan was very disappointed when he didn't get an answer. He wanted to hug Huo Nanxiao with his little hands, but he held back. He pushed Huo Nanxiao away and said, "Daddy, I'm sleepy."
"Okay, go to sleep." Huo Nanxiao released Huo Yuan, pulled the blanket over the little guy, and glanced at Xia Xingxing, who was sulking beside him.
Huo Nanxiao turned off the light and left the room.
Huo Nanxiao took out his phone and found several missed calls, all from Xia Luoluo. Huo Nanxiao called back one of them.
"Young Master Huo, aren't you at the hospital?" Xia Luoluo asked.
Huo Nanxiao asked, "What is it?"
"My sister isn't doing well. Could you come to the hospital?" Xia Luoluo asked.
Huo Nanxiao asked, "Where is the doctor?"
“The doctor has been staying in the ward the whole time,” Charlotte replied.
Huo Nanxiao said, "Since there are doctors here, why should I go to the hospital?"
“My sister’s health isn’t good; perhaps it would be better if you were here,” Xia Luoluo replied.
Huo Nanxiao said impatiently, "I'll go there tomorrow."
He hung up the phone immediately.
He tossed his phone aside, rubbing his forehead with a headache. He was a little tired, but remembering that Xia Ningxi was still injured, he went to the guest room to check on her.
Xia Ningxi didn't sleep; instead, she sat alone on the sofa, silently drinking hot milk.
Xia Ningxi was a little surprised to see Huo Nanxiao in her room. "Why are you here?"
"Why aren't you asleep so late?" Huo Nanxiao asked.
Xia Ningxi said, "I can't sleep."
Huo Nanxiao asked, "Is the pain from your wound keeping you awake?"
"More or less," Xia Ningxi replied truthfully.
Huo Nanxiao lowered his eyes. "Let me see your wound."
Xia Ningxi instinctively clutched the hem of her clothes, refusing, "No need, I'm fine."
"Are you afraid of me?" Huo Nanxiao asked very seriously.
Xia Ningxi said, "There's nothing to see. I'm fine now."
She didn't want to have too much contact with Huo Nanxiao, and she especially didn't want to lift her clothes to let Huo Nanxiao see her body; she would feel very uncomfortable.
The air around them was thick with an indescribable ambiguity, and the strange atmosphere made Xia Ningxi very uncomfortable. She coughed lightly and immediately changed the subject: "By the way, how's the situation at the hospital? Aren't you planning to go to the hospital to stay with Xia Wanwan?"
“Let’s go tomorrow,” Huo Nanxiao said.
Xia Ningxi: "She is in a critical period right now. It would be better if you stayed by her side."
"So, you want me to go to the hospital to be with her?" Huo Nanxiao asked back.
Xia Ningxi said, "It would be much better for you to stay at the hospital now than to stay at home. If there's an emergency, you can make a decision immediately. You love her so much, you wouldn't want anything to happen to her, right? There's no need to stay at home. I'll take good care of the child, hmm..."
Before Xia Ningxi could finish speaking, the man's cold lips sealed her soft lips. She stared at Huo Nanxiao, who was so close to her, and was completely stunned, her mind blank.
As soon as Huo Nanxiao left her lips, Xia Ningxi was so shocked that she immediately pushed him away and hid on the sofa, but bumped into the wound on her back. The pain made Xia Ningxi frown and her beautiful face turned pale in that instant.
"Be careful," Huo Nanxiao said in a low voice.
Xia Ningxi immediately distanced herself from him, trying to remain calm: "Stay away from me!"
Huo Nanxiao's handsome face darkened.
Xia Ningxi said angrily, "Huo Nanxiao, you're an adult. Can you please stop doing such irresponsible things? I've already let you off the hook. Please be mindful of your status."
