Chapter 3: Son preference

"The little girl has good eyesight. She picked up a Han Dynasty treasure right away."

A male voice sounded from behind. Li Xiujun covered her pockets vigilantly and quickened her pace. What she feared came true. She was careful enough, but she was still being watched.

"Don't be afraid, I'm not a bad person. I just want to talk business with you."

The man caught up and stopped Li Xiujun.

When she saw the face clearly, Li Xiujun was stunned. It was the third uncle of the Gu family!

Li Xiujun breathed a sigh of relief and looked at Uncle Gu with a smile: "What business are you talking about?"

Uncle Gu is a very good person and he would not cheat her.

"Little girl, aren't you afraid that I'm a bad guy?"

Uncle Gu smiled and teased, pointing to the tea stall next to him and asking them to sit there.

"You don't look like that."

Li Xiujun sat opposite him, ordered a cup of barley tea, and looked at the young Uncle Gu with curiosity.

After her death in her previous life, she wandered around the Gu family's old house for a long time. Her parents-in-law protected her, and Gu Ming hastily handled her funeral and married Su Wanru.

After returning from a business trip, Uncle Gu realized that something was wrong and was determined to seek justice for her. His parents-in-law once asked him why he wanted to cause trouble in the family for a stranger. Uncle Gu said that she was not an outsider and had been a member of the Gu family for more than ten years.

But apart from Uncle Gu, who in the Gu family really treats her as a family member?

"Pfft, the little girl is probably not looking at the face, but the color."

Seeing her staring at him blankly, Uncle Gu teased her. He had countless suitors in school, and after work, the uncles and aunts in the office were arranging blind dates for him all day long.

He felt that he was young and had not had enough fun, so he did not respond to any of them.

Li Xiujun's face flushed and she looked away: "Even if you're pretty, I won't give you a discount!"

Thinking of the affection in her previous life, she originally wanted to give him a discount, but who knew that Uncle Gu was so slick and dishonest when he was young!

Uncle Gu laughed heartily: "As long as the product is good, the price is not a problem."

"What are you going to carve out of it?"

Li Xiujun tilted her head and thought for a moment. The aqua-white jade with a slight emerald green tint would be perfect for carving a small plum blossom ornament along the texture.

After expressing his thoughts, Uncle Gu nodded with satisfaction, and his clear eyes showed a hint of appreciation.

"The little girl is so talented and discerning at such a young age. Is her family in this business?"

"I won't tell you!"

Li Xiujun didn't want to have any more involvement with the Gu family. She just wanted to make some money with her skills and finish college.

"Okay, don't tell me."

"You'll have to tell me how much it costs, right?"

Uncle Gu ordered a few more plates of dim sum and pushed them to Li Xiujuan. This girl was too thin. If her family wasn't so poor, they probably wouldn't let her, a girl, come alone to a place like the Antique Street where all kinds of people mixed together.

"Just give me one hundred."

Li Xiujun only charged the purchase price and basic labor costs. She didn't want to make money from Uncle Gu.

"The little girl doesn't understand the market situation. No matter how good your craftsmanship is, as long as you don't destroy it, it will be worth more than a hundred yuan."

Uncle Gu looked at Li Xiujun with a smile. People in this line of work all hope to get a big bargain and become rich overnight, but she only offered the lowest price.

"When will you be able to carve it?"

"tomorrow."

Uncle Gu pointed upstairs.

"Okay, let's meet in the teahouse's private room at this time tomorrow. We'll pay and receive the goods."

Li Xiujun didn't expect that her first business would go so smoothly. The seller was an old acquaintance, with clear eyes and a smile.

Seeing this, Uncle Gu also started laughing and asked the waiter to pack up the leftover snacks and give them to Li Xiujun.

"It's my deposit."

Li Xiujun couldn't help but raise her lips as she sat on the bus, holding the snacks in her arms. The Third Uncle Gu she knew in her previous life was dignified, mature, and steady. After becoming the head of the family, he had a sullen face and was always firm in his words.

Unexpectedly, in his youth, he was a smooth-talking young man, good-looking and good at talking, and a top student who graduated from Peking University. He must have had many suitors around him, but in his previous life, until her death, he never married...

When she returned home, her grandfather was sitting in the yard holding her admission letter in his hand, stroking it with his hands. A complicated expression appeared on his face, and he forced a smile when he saw her coming.

"You came back empty-handed? Didn't you buy anything?"

"The money for college has already been prepared for you. Don't worry, just buy whatever you want."

Grandpa stroked her hair and turned around to prepare food.

Li Xiujun took the khaki coat to Su Wanru's house.

The square bungalow was tidy. The chives planted in the front yard had grown tall and were green. Su Wanru was watering them.

Her mother stood by, washing rice while scolding her: "We grew up in the same alley, but Xiujun got into university right away, and you, on the other hand, just lie around at home and play the role of a prostitute!"

"Tomorrow I'll talk to your uncle and ask him to find you a job in the fiber factory! Or you can get married!"

Su Wanru put down the water scoop: "Mom, I want to repeat another year."

“Repeat!”

Su's mother's voice suddenly rose, and she twisted her shoulder fiercely: "Your brother still has to go to school and find a wife. How can our family afford to give you a wedding? Look in the mirror, you're not cut out for college!"

Turning around, Su's mother saw Li Xiujun standing outside the door and put on a smile: "The college students are here, come in and sit down. Wanru, get some sunflower seeds for Xiujun."

Su Wanru looked at Li Xiujun, a flash of jealousy and gloom in her eyes, then a smile appeared on her face.

"Xiujun, come on, let's go into my room and talk."

Li Xiujun dodged her arm and thrust the coat in her arms towards her. She said awkwardly in front of Li's mother, "This coat was given to you by your boyfriend. I can't accept it."

As soon as she finished speaking, Su Wanru hurriedly covered her mouth and told her not to say anything.

Mother Li glanced at the coat material, opened Su Wanru's hand, and let Li Xiujun continue.

Li Xiujun seemed to have done something wrong and was too timid to speak.

"Xiujun, don't be afraid. Tell me what's going on. Is this damn girl dating someone outside behind my back?"

Li's mother held Li Xiujun back and wouldn't let her leave.

Li Xiujun glanced at Su Wanru and stammered, "Last night, I went to the movies with her wearing the coat Wanru gave me. On the way back, a strange man mistook me for her. He said he was from the village where she had been sent to the countryside as an educated youth and that he was her boyfriend."

"He also said that this coat was a token of love he gave to Wanru. When I found out, I immediately returned the coat."

After Li Xiujun finished speaking, Li's mother slapped Su Wanru hard and demanded, "Tell me the truth, how did you get back to the city? Did you use this guy's connections? And you accepted such expensive clothes from him!"

Su Wanru covered her face and glared at Li Xiujun with resentment. Her parents were still alive and they were a dual-income family, which was much better off than Li Xiujun who lived with her lonely grandfather.

But her family favored boys over girls, so Li Xiujun could stay in the city while she had to go to the remote mountainous countryside. Li Xiujun was able to get into university, but she failed! Why?
