As soon as Wen Jiaojiao got out of the car, she felt an itch on her back. She reached up and scratched it as she walked home.
"Brother, why does my back suddenly feel so itchy?"
Wen Zhaoye parked his motorcycle:
"Take off the mink coat, let me show you."
As soon as Wen Jiaojiao took off her fur coat, Wen Zhaoye pulled open the back of her T-shirt and glanced inside. Suddenly, his eyes narrowed as he saw that Wen Jiaojiao's back was covered in red spots. He exclaimed in surprise:
"You're covered in heat rash."
Wen Jiaojiao paused for a moment, then raised her hand again to grab her back and said:
"No wonder it's so itchy. If I had known you were going to buy me gold, I wouldn't have wanted the mink coat. You've gone too far with your showing off."
Wen Zhaoye, rather speechless, loosened her collar:
"Let Dad open the door first, and I'll boil some water for you to wash up."
Xu Cuifen had locked the door long ago and was sitting inside watching TV. Normally, she would definitely be at the village chat room.
But ever since Wen Jiaojiao revealed that no boss was pursuing her, she hasn't dared to leave the house all day, for fear of being questioned.
Wen Jiaojiao called out, "Mom, I'm back."
Xu Cuifen slapped her thigh, her face full of annoyance, and said:
"Girl, why are you back now? You should go out and lay low for a while, otherwise those people in the village will definitely gossip about you."
The door opened, and Wen Jiaojiao, flashing her gold outfit, said smugly, "It was resolved a long time ago."
"Oh, my daughter must be joking with me. Did that old man buy all these things for you? Where is he? Why didn't he come back with you?"
Wen Jiaojiao walked into the house:
"My brother bought it for me, just to cover up your ridiculous and outrageous lie."
Wen Xiaojian, leaning on his cane, walked out the door and greeted her cheerfully, "Jiaojiao's back! Did you suffer on this trip?"
"No, Dad."
The three of them went into Xu Cuifen's room and chatted warmly and harmoniously, while Wen Zhaoye sat in the kitchen stove, adding firewood.
He turned and went into his room, only to find Wen Jiaojiao's things on the newly made bed, while the old bed had been moved to the doorway and hadn't even been covered with a straw mat.
Since we're sleeping together anyway, it doesn't matter which bed we sleep in.
He paid no attention, took his bathtub to the well, washed himself, and after preparing the bathwater, called out:
"Wife, time to take a bath."
The three people in the next room paused, and Xu Cuifen asked in surprise, "Who are you calling? How come he brought a wife back after going out for a while?"
Wen Xiaojian was equally bewildered and shouted, "I'm your father, how could you just get married without saying a word?"
Wen Zhaoye opened the door and said happily, "My sister and I are getting engaged in the next couple of days and will get married during the New Year. We'll get married sooner or later, so there's no problem with it now."
Wen Jiaojiao was restless: Please, I just wanted to earn some money, how did it become an engagement and marriage?
Xu Cuifen grinned, showing her big teeth, and quickly stood up, saying:
"Oh, Zhaoye, why are you boiling water? Mom can do this. And you're back so late. Have you eaten? Mom will boil you a few more eggs."
Wen Zhaoye shook his head: "No need, Mom."
Xu Cuifen's smile stretched almost to the back of her head:
"Zhaoye, you must be tired from this trip. Take a rest. Let Mom do any chores."
Wen Zhaoye smiled happily and said, "I'll go to sleep after I take a shower, that's all."
The two exchanged words, with Wen Zhaoye constantly mentioning his mother, while Xu Cuifen's words revealed no satisfaction.
Wen Jiaojiao was speechless for a moment, and walked out, saying:
"You two continue chatting, I'm going to take a shower first."
Xu Cuifen was a typical example of someone who was looking for a better option while still having options, and she was willing to settle for anything less than a mule. She urged:
"Anyway, we'll get married soon, so it's the same as being married. You two should just consummate your marriage tonight." It's better to avoid any unforeseen complications. If the guy regrets it later, you can't just deny it now that she's pregnant.
As Wen Jiaojiao reached the door, she awkwardly glanced at the man in front of her, only to meet his shy gaze, which seemed to be filled with conflict.
Xu Cuifen nudged Wen Xiaojian: "Come on, old man, let's go out for a walk and give the young people some space."
Wen Jiaojiao: "..." You were practically telling us to leave room for us to do our business.
Seeing that the two were really planning to leave, Wen Zhaoye hurriedly spoke up, his meaning ambiguous:
"I'm not really available right now. We'll get engaged first, and things at the factory should be getting back on track soon. There's no rush."
Xu Cuifen felt uneasy. She hadn't brought it up before because she was somewhat indifferent, but now, like a duck that was already in her mouth, she felt a little afraid it would fly away.
Her eyes darted around, a plan forming in her mind, but she didn't show it on her face, saying, "Alright, go wash up and get some rest."
After Wen Jiaojiao finished bathing, as Wen Zhaoye poured water into the bathtub, she walked out with a stiff back:
"I'm going out, you take care of your washing."
Wen Zhaoye glanced at her and said:
"There are mosquitoes everywhere outside, so you can just lie in bed. I'll shower with my back to you. Besides... we've already slept together, why be so fussy?"
His last words were spoken in a slightly lower voice. Remembering what had happened last time, Wen Jiaojiao's expression became slightly unnatural, but she insisted on walking out.
"I think it's better to have some personal privacy."
"Then let's go to Mom and Dad's room, there are mosquitoes outside."
Wen Jiaojiao: "..." Why does it feel like I've run into a father figure?
Wen Zhaoye quickly wiped his body dry, and as he opened the door to pour out the bathwater, Wen Jiaojiao lay down on the new bed covered with a mosquito net.
Wen Zhaoye entered the room again, his gaze lingered on the empty bed for a moment, and then he walked towards her without hesitation:
"Honey, is your back still itchy? Let me scratch it for you."
Hearing his approaching footsteps, Wen Jiaojiao's breath hitched for a second, fearing he might unleash his beastly nature, and she politely declined:
"I think that if people sleep together before getting married, it's easy for them to gossip if they see it."
