As dawn broke, roosters raised their heads high and crowed eagerly, while people leading cattle and sheep in the alley greeted each other.
Wen Jiaojiao lay on the bed, her delicate face flushed as she wiped the sweat from her forehead. Looking at the loose-fitting floral pajama pants she was wearing, she said in a soft, sweet voice:
"Brother, could you help me alter some clothes using the sewing machine at home? I want a sleeveless pajama top and shorts to sleep in."
Wen Zhaoye, dressed in black shorts, had barely slept all night; his muscular chest was dotted with red spots from mosquito bites.
He opened his eyes groggily, belatedly realizing the meaning behind the words. His handsome face suddenly cleared, and he sat up in shock: "..."
She's actually trying to seduce me at night?
The electric fan was constantly oscillating last night, and the curtains weren't drawn. Wen Jiaojiao looked over, confused, and, lying on the bed with her chin resting on her hand, said:
Why are you so agitated?
Unable to contain his feelings, Wen Zhaoye turned to look at her, his voice hoarse and languid from the morning air as he said:
"I'm sharing a room with you, and we don't even close the curtains. Do you think it's appropriate for me to wear that kind of thing?"
Wen Jiaojiao's short-sleeved floral pajamas clung to her sweaty back. She sat cross-legged, raised her hand to pinch the hem of the pajamas at the back, and pulled it apart to dry it, saying:
"Sleeveless means it's one sleeve shorter than a short-sleeved shirt, and shorts can be just a little above the knee, similar to your baggy shorts. That shouldn't be too much, right?"
Wen Zhaoye thought it made sense, so he lay down again. As he turned his head, he caught a glimpse of her smooth, delicate skin beneath her clothes.
His cheeks flushed, and he suddenly felt a dryness in his mouth. He turned his head away from her and said:
"Don't think I don't know what you're thinking." You've been intentionally or unintentionally showing me skin first thing this morning, and you still say you're not trying to seduce me. How do you know so many tricks? Did you use them on Xu Dajun too?
Wen Jiaojiao listened, completely bewildered, and said:
"Huh? That's strange. If you don't want to do it, then don't. It's not like I'm some cunning villain. I can always ask my mom to do it."
Xu Cuifen heard the sound in the courtyard and called out:
"Jiaojiao, get up now that you're awake. Mom will take you to the county town."
Wen Jiaojiao pulled open the mosquito net tucked under the bamboo mat, got out of bed, went to the wardrobe, and casually picked out a pink dress, saying:
"Okay, Mom, I'll be right out after I change my clothes."
As Wen Zhaoye was considering whether to go out, he saw her glance at him without any anger, and then she raised her hand and pulled down the curtain.
The room was small, with two beds against one wall, only two meters apart. An electric fan blew slowly through the room, and the floral curtains swayed gently.
Wen Zhaoye inadvertently caught a glimpse of the girl standing naked behind the wardrobe, her clothes casually tossed on the dressing table.
Her body was as smooth and supple as jade, with alluring curves and long hair swaying gracefully over her lower back.
His heart was racing with an unprecedented panic, and his eyes were swirling with a turbulent lust.
The tiny stimuli from countless nerve endings converged on my lower abdomen, and I forgot to look away for a moment. When I came to my senses, I felt two warm liquids flowing down below my nose.
He turned his head away, his face flushed, and hurriedly raised his hand to wipe his philtrum.
This is fucking weird. It's like it can react to her. It's like it's burning too much.
Wen Jiaojiao changed her dress, lifted the curtain, and saw a red glow under his nose and on the back of his hand. She exclaimed in surprise:
"Brother, why is your nose bleeding? Are you alright?"
Wen Zhaoye's gaze darted around, and he subconsciously turned his back to her, suddenly grabbing a short-sleeved shirt from the bedside table to cover his lower abdomen, his voice muffled as he said:
"Get out of here as soon as you're done. Don't disturb my sleep. It's hot, so it's normal to be irritable."
Wen Jiaojiao pouted, walked around his bed, and muttered, "Look how lazy you are, you'll be bedridden sooner or later."
Her long hair was loose, and she wore pink hair clips behind her ears.
The pink dress hugged her slender figure, highlighting her tiny waist.
Wearing round-toed leather shoes, she exudes a sweet and lovely charm with a touch of allure.
As Wen Zhaoye watched her figure, an image of a little princess riding in a cart flashed through his mind, and he murmured:
"Wouldn't people laugh at you for dressing like that, carrying an umbrella, and sitting on a cart?"
Xu Cuifen placed the thermos filled with cold water into the cloth bag on the flatbed cart, looked up and saw Wen Jiaojiao, and laughed exaggeratedly:
"Wow~ Is this my daughter? How beautiful she is! She's just like a princess living in a palace on TV."
Wen Jiaojiao let out a soft laugh, picked up a long-handled umbrella from the flatbed cart, opened it to shield her head, and said:
"Mom, come on, are you kidding me? If you keep praising me like this, I'll get cocky."
Aunt Pang, the neighbor next door, stood in the courtyard of her tiled house and asked curiously:
"Jiaojiao's mom, where are you and your daughter headed?"
Xu Cuifen and she were among the few people in the village with a good relationship, she said with a smile:
"Going to the county town to buy some household necessities, nothing much."
Aunt Pang was a well-known matchmaker in the neighborhood, making a fortune just from matchmaking. Her eyes gleamed as she sized up Wen Jiaojiao, saying:
"I'm not saying this to be mean, but our Jiaojiao is just beautiful. When she puts on a little dress, she looks like a completely different person."
Upon hearing this, Xu Cuifen was even happier than if she had been praised herself, her smile stretching to the back of her ears as she said:
"Of course! I'm not exaggerating, but in all the surrounding villages, there's no one prettier than my Jiaojiao."
Seeing that she was happy, Aunt Pang came out of her own yard and stood in front of Xu Cuifen, getting straight to the point:
“Jiaojiao’s mom, look at Jiaojiao, she’s not getting any younger. Now that she’s back, how about I find her a husband?”
Her voice wasn't quiet; it pierced through the walls and reached Wen Zhaoye's ears as he was getting dressed.
He paused, his thin lips pressed tightly together, his handsome face darkening as he tucked his long-sleeved shirt into his black trousers, rolled up the sleeves to reveal a section of his fair, muscular arm, and stepped out, interrupting their conversation:
"Aren't you going to town? I happen to be going to the county town, I can take you there."
Xu Cuifen turned her head and glanced at him. Although she was still eyeing Wen Zhaoye, she also wanted to keep an eye on things and see if there was anything better.
She suppressed her smile and said, "Zhaoye, wait a minute, let me chat with your auntie for a bit more."
Wen Jiaojiao knew what she was going to be asked next, and unwillingly said, "Mom, I've already said I don't want to get married."
Xu Cuifen ignored her and asked Aunt Pang casually, "Which house is it?"
Aunt Pang became interested and said:
“Wang Mazi from the neighboring Xiaowang Village, his son is now a platoon leader. He earns about sixty yuan a month and sends twenty of it home. If you marry into that family, you won’t be poor.”
Xu Cuifen thought of Wang Mazi's son; he was the right age, tall and strong, and his mother had died last year, so she could take charge of the household after marriage.
She said happily, "I'll take a look at his son another day."
"No, what I meant was to introduce Jiaojiao to Wang Mazi. His wife died last year, right? He asked me to introduce him to a suitable person this year, and I think Jiaojiao is a good match."
Aunt Pang knew she had misunderstood, but she still couldn't believe how the woman had the nerve to ask to see someone else's son. She continued in a slightly strange tone:
"Why would you want to see his son? His son has found a girlfriend from the performing arts troupe and they're dating right now."
That girl is from the city, educated, and a proper young woman... You should at least know what kind of pot goes with what kind of lid, right?
