When Wen Zhu heard him speak up, he dared not argue further, but he did not go to pick up the child. Instead, he continued to pour tea for everyone.
Because of the surgical incision on her abdomen, Li Yue'e couldn't sit up to hold the baby, but the child continued to cry loudly.
The old woman acted as if she couldn't see anything and continued chatting with several women of similar age next to her about how shady the hospital was, insisting that Li Yue'e stay a few more days. Fortunately, she was wise enough to see through their trick to swindle money and insisted on going home.
Wen Jiaojiao couldn't stand it any longer and went inside, saying:
"Or I can carry it for you."
Li Yue'e wiped away her tears and said:
"Thank you."
Wen Jiaojiao awkwardly held the child, her whole body stiff, with a constant feeling that the child might fall out. She moved with difficulty to Wen Zhaoye's side and said:
"Try giving it a hug."
Wen Zhaoye glanced at the child, but did not pick him up, saying:
"I still have to take care of my own child."
One of the older men said:
"Hey, Akino. You wouldn't happen to have a baby, would you?"
Wen Zhaoye, mindful of Wen Jiaojiao's less-than-stellar reputation due to her unmarried pregnancy, shook his head and said:
"No, but we've already decided to have children after we get married."
"What married couple doesn't want children? What are you saying?"
Wen Zhaoye spoke with absolute precision:
"I had planned to move my business to the mainland, so I thought I would wait two years before having a baby. But then my family urged me to have a baby, so I changed my mind."
The baby stopped crying as soon as he was in Wen Jiaojiao's arms.
She found it strange, and would sometimes gently tap her little face, sometimes gently tap her forehead.
The baby thought she was playing with her and twitched the corner of her lips.
Just then, the old woman leaned against the doorframe, saw Wen Jiaojiao playing with the child, and said with a smile:
"Jiaojiao, right? You like this child, so why don't we give her to your family?"
This way, we can have another spot in our family. If the next child is also a girl, we can have another one.
While it's possible to evade the one-child policy now, there are still risks involved. Since your family is wealthy, you can have as many children as you want without fear of fines, right? Besides, another child adds liveliness.
Wen Jiaojiao's face stiffened, but Wen Zhaoye spoke up first: "We don't like crowds, and we only plan to have one child."
The group found this strange, and one of the older men said:
"Oh, if it's a girl, does that mean you won't have her?"
Wen Zhaoye nodded sincerely:
"I'm not having any more children. I can't take care of all of them."
Wen Jiaojiao was actually a little afraid of the pain of childbirth, but she felt that having a child for someone worthwhile meant she didn't have that worry.
The reason I agreed to Jiang Peitian's request was simply because Wen Zhaoye liked children. Little did I know that while he liked children, his values were also more upright than anyone else's.
The old woman curled her lip, her face full of disbelief:
"If it were a girl, wouldn't your company be going to be handed over to an outsider?"
Wen Zhaoye: "A daughter is also one's own child. Giving her to someone else is not giving her to an outsider."
The group looked incredulous, but didn't say anything more. However, they wanted to see how he would make Wen Jiaojiao have children one after another if his first child was a girl, thus embarrassing himself.
Wen Jiaojiao looked at the man beside her with gentle eyes. After a moment, as if she had thought of something, she said:
"Brother, why don't you smoke anymore?"
Wen Zhaoye whispered in her ear:
"Because I'm going to be a dad."
Wen Jiaojiao said sarcastically:
"Fine, then I'm not worth you quitting smoking."
Wen Zhaoye hesitated for a moment, then said:
"Not really, but I never saw you object to smoking in front of me before, so I never thought about it. Of course, if I had known back then that you didn't like the smell of smoke, I definitely would have quit for you."
Wen Jiaojiao was visibly pleased by his coaxing, and she insisted on handing the child to him, saying:
"You can hold me, I'm tired of holding you, consider this a good start to getting used to it."
"No," Wen Zhaoye refused, and as she frowned slightly, he said somewhat embarrassedly:
"Because when my child grows up, I want to tell her that the first child I ever held in my arms was her, and that I have always been looking forward to her."
It turns out that men value rituals more than women, but it simply depends on whether the other person is worthy of it.
Wen Zhaoye doesn't particularly like children, but he does like having children with Wen Jiaojiao. He was able to quit his years-long smoking habit decisively when he learned he was about to become a father.
He wasn't exactly kind-hearted in his life, but he gave all his kindness and patience to his wife and children.
Wen Jiaojiao hugged the child back into her arms and said:
"If you put it that way, I feel like I'm being incredibly irresponsible."
"No, that's not it. You're responsible for having my children, and I'll be responsible for being good to you and the children. It's very fair."
Wen Zhaoye raised his arm and put it on her slender shoulder. After speaking, he turned to Wen Zhu and said, "Zhuzi, come and hug your child."
Like most men, Wen Zhu favored sons over daughters. He muttered, "I was planning to keep her to hold my son."
The old woman spoke again:
"That's right, I only take care of my grandson, I won't take care of my granddaughter."
Suddenly, a voice came from outside the door:
"Grandson, grandson, do you have a throne to inherit? These two dilapidated houses were the reason I refused to marry my daughter back then."
"If it weren't for your family's guarantees and promises, would I have just stood by and watched my daughter jump into a fire pit? Did you two completely forget the promises you made?"
Everyone turned to look and saw a group of people carrying a crib, baby clothes, and a large pile of other things.
The woman who was speaking looked somewhat fashionable and was probably from a county or city.
Li Yue'e wiped away her tears:
"Mom, you're here."
