After hanging up, Wen Jiaojiao called again: "Jiang Ci, how is it?"
Jiang Ci, who had just composed herself, let out another sob, saying:
"That's it, he seems quite satisfied with that girl."
"Are you crying? Wait a minute, I'll have Wen Zhaoye come pick you up now." Wen Jiaojiao hung up the phone and called out towards the main room:
"Brother, could you go pick up Jiang Ci? It seems like Zhou Jinyan has really decided to get married. Xiao Ci is so sad."
"They're both so troublesome. If they're not a good match, they should just break up. What's there to be sad about? They're such pathetic people."
Wen Zhaoye was sweeping snow at the door when he heard that he had to go so far. He couldn't help but complain, completely forgetting that he had been saddened by Wen Jiaojiao every night until dawn.
Wen Jiaojiao chuckled softly and said:
"You talk too much. Hurry up and go. Besides, I'm not comfortable letting Jiang Ci stay in a hotel all by herself."
Wen Zhaoye put down the broom, walked into the house and said:
"Honey, what would you like to eat? I've already gone, I can't just bring someone back alone."
Wen Jiaojiao thought for a moment and said:
"I want to eat hot pot. It's so cold today, this is the most comforting thing to eat."
"You probably can't buy hot pot base here, but I can buy the ingredients and have the people at Babaozhai stir-fry the base for us and bring it back. You stay at home, I'll be right back."
As Wen Zhaoye was about to leave, Wen Jiaojiao wrapped the scarf around his neck: "Although it was knitted by my mother, it still looks good on you."
Wen Zhaoye had fair skin, and the red towel looked perfectly natural on him, but he still took it off and wrapped it around her neck, saying:
"There's no air conditioning here, and you don't want to lie in bed. It wouldn't be good if our child got cold."
Wen Jiaojiao smiled sweetly and said:
"Let's go together then, I'd like to go out for a walk."
Wen Zhaoye glanced outside; the snow had stopped, and the sun was shining brightly on the earth.
He took a long men's down jacket from the closet and wrapped her up tightly, saying:
"It shouldn't be cold now."
Wen Jiaojiao then sat on the motorcycle:
"I've forgotten that we should have let Jiang Ci stay in that little villa in our county town; that would have put our minds at ease."
Wen Zhaoye rode his bike very slowly because he was afraid of slipping on the road and having an accident. He reminded him:
"There's only one bridal room with a bed, and I'd feel uncomfortable letting her stay there."
Wen Jiaojiao put both her little hands into his pockets and sighed:
“Brother, actually, if you don’t have money, it would be fine for the two of us to stay in the village like this. Occasionally we can ride our motorcycles to the small county town. That would be quite nice.”
"Wife, have you gotten used to the glitz and glamour of Hong Kong, with its endless cars?" Wen Zhaoye chuckled and explained.
“In this area, only the wealthy can afford motorcycles, so the good life you’re talking about is still inseparable from a material foundation.”
Suddenly, Wen Jiaojiao leaned close to his ear and whispered:
"But I'm happy even when I'm with you, honey."
Wen Zhaoye wanted to turn around and look, but he knew his wife was pregnant and the road was slippery, making an accident more likely.
He suppressed this urge, forcing a smile, and responded to everything with a polite reply:
"Yes, but you're my wife, and I can't bear to let you live a poor life."
Wen Jiaojiao secretly tightened her grip on him with her small hand that was inside his pocket:
"My husband is so good."
The repeated calls of "husband" warmed Wen Zhao's heart, making her wish she could give her life for him.
A bright smile appeared in his eyes, and even the biting wind no longer felt cold.
The two arrived in the county town, took black-and-white portrait photos, obtained their marriage certificate, and bought their things. Just as they entered the hotel, they overheard Zhou Jinyan talking to Jiang Ci.
The two went inside and asked, "What's wrong now?"
Zhou Jinyan stood to the side, while Jiang Ci sat on the edge of the bed, her head bowed and remaining silent. It was Zhou Jinyan who spoke first:
“She wants to go home, but I was thinking that it’s almost the end of the year, and it’s not easy to buy tickets, not to mention that going back to Hong Kong would require a round trip.”
Wen Jiaojiao deliberately asked:
"What does it matter to you whether they can buy tickets or not? Isn't this a blind date? Judging by how things progress in the countryside, they'll probably hit it off today and get engaged after the New Year, right?"
Zhou Jinyan was speechless for a moment. Jiang Ci, carrying her suitcase, walked up to Wen Jiaojiao and said:
"I still want to live in the countryside."
Wen Zhaoye hesitated to speak up, because Wen Jiaojiao's attitude was quite clear, and Zhou Jinyan was his brother.
He looked at the two women walking ahead, then turned around and said:
"How about we go to my house for hot pot?"
Zhou Jinyan wanted to refuse, but often her actions went against her wishes.
For example, today, everything was agreed upon, and I even convinced myself of my own feelings.
But worried that Jiang Ci might encounter problems while alone there, they went to a hotel instead.
However, knowing that the blind date went well, Jiang Ci completely ignored him.
He clearly wanted this result, but he was also feeling a bit uncomfortable.
He hesitated for a few seconds, then finally gave in:
Let's go.
Wen Zhaoye, carrying the things in his hands, said angrily:
"What a waste of my time. If I had known you were going, Jiaojiao and I wouldn't have come. In this freezing weather, we've just been playing around with you guys."
Zhou Jinyan replied in an equally irritable tone:
"You've made it through. I don't know who made me hang out with Zhou Jinshao on the streets of Hong Kong back then, so that Wen Jiaojiao wouldn't find out about us."
Now that I'm in this state, you're only thinking of yourself, right?
Wen Zhaoye didn't take his emotions seriously at all:
"I forgot to mention, the wedding is in two days. Have someone clean the little house; you'll be paid."
"You think of me when you need something."
After muttering to himself, Zhou Jinyan glanced at Jiang Ci walking ahead and sighed again.
Jiang Ci hesitated for a moment when she saw the two motorcycles, but in the end she followed behind Wen Jiaojiao:
"I'm riding in this car too."
Zhou Jinyan heard this as he stepped out, and he said:
"Jiaojiao is pregnant now, it's dangerous for the three of you to squeeze into one car."
Jiang Ci hesitated for a moment, then Wen Jiaojiao grabbed her arm and said:
"My brother is skilled, so you don't need to worry about him."
Then, Zhou Jinyan saw Wen Zhaoye drive the two of them away.
