Xu Cuifen had heard about the ditch from Aunt Pang early that morning, but she didn't go with her.
She stood guard at the door and saw Wen Jiaojiao storming home. She quickly pulled her into the kitchen and waited until Wen Zhaoye went to the stream before speaking:
"My dear daughter, how are you so clever? Did you win over your brother? Yes, just like that, ruin his reputation, and you'll never have to worry about him not marrying you."
Wen Jiaojiao rolled her eyes. She lifted the pot lid, ladled hot water into the bucket, and patiently explained:
"I really just accidentally fell down, and before he could dodge, I fell on him."
Xu Cuifen wore a look of delighted surprise, then took the aluminum ladle from her hand and scooped water, saying:
“He dares to hide, but the ditch is dangerous at night. If you fall in and get bitten by snakes, insects, or rodents, I’ll fight him to the death.”
Wen Jiaojiao sighed:
“Mom, we have to be reasonable. We can’t do that. I was the one who forced him to go. If something goes wrong, it’s not his fault. You’re not allowed to talk to him like that in the future.”
Her voice, soft and gentle, pierced through the brick wall and reached Wen Zhaoye's ears as he walked into the courtyard.
His legs were washed clean of mud, his rolled-up sleeves and trouser legs were damp and dripping with water, and his tall, unassuming figure looked towards the kitchen with a hint of a smile in his eyes.
She even started arguing with her mother because of me, which means I'm more important than her mother.
Xu Cuifen was disappointed in her, but she couldn't bear to say another word. She picked up the bucket and poured the water into the bathtub in her room.
"Honey, you've had a long day. Go wash up and rest."
Wen Jiaojiao pulled her pajamas down from the rope in the yard and went inside, saying:
"By the way, Mom, I fell down on the back hill last time, and I can't remember some of the things in my head, but it doesn't affect my eating and drinking."
Xu Cuifen's heart leaped with worry. She held her head and looked her up and down anxiously, saying:
"Oh dear, my daughter! Why didn't you tell me sooner? If there were any aftereffects, would I even want to live?"
"Didn't I say it won't affect our eating or drinking, it won't affect our lives?" Wen Jiaojiao's beautiful eyebrows curved slightly as she reassured her.
Don't you think I look better now than before?
“It’s definitely good, but you can’t leave an illness untreated. Mom will take you to the county hospital tomorrow.”
After Xu Cuifen finished speaking, she happened to glance at Wen Zhaoye sitting in the main room and continued:
"Zhaoye, your daughter's head isn't feeling well. Take us to the clinic tomorrow."
Wen Jiaojiao was once again taken aback by the name's rusticity. She glanced sideways at the golden wheat drying outside the door and said:
"The wheat you dried today needs to be threshed tomorrow, right? Why don't you leave someone at home to do it and take care of my dad?" He should be done by the time he gets back, which will save him one more thing to do. I'm such a clever little devil.
Wen Zhaoye noticed her gaze and assumed she wanted to go to the hospital alone with him. He smiled slightly and said:
"Alright, as you wish, I'll take her to the clinic tomorrow."
Wen Jiaojiao's black eyelashes trembled slightly, her eyes widening in astonishment as she slowly turned her head to gaze at the man who had abruptly averted his gaze: "..."
How come I don't know that's what I meant?
Xu Cuifen was worried and really wanted to take her own daughter with her, but she considered that spending more time together would help them develop a relationship.
She suppressed her urges and planned to see the traditional Chinese medicine doctor in the morning and then personally take him to see the sorceress in the afternoon.
Wen Jiaojiao turned and went into the house, closing the door behind her.
"Besides, I don't want to go too far. I'll only accept a visit to the nearby clinic, not the county hospital." The more backward the area, the easier it should be to fool them.
Xu Cuifen: "That won't do, daughter. It's better to go to a big hospital for peace of mind."
Wen Jiaojiao leaned against the door, her long, delicate eyelashes trembling slightly. She suppressed the tension in her voice and said forcefully:
"Then I won't go. I'm afraid it will be scary to have my blood drawn and needles inserted. I'll just see a traditional Chinese medicine doctor at the clinic."
"Alright, if you ever feel unwell, you absolutely must go to the county hospital."
Having no other choice, Xu Cuifen could only nod in agreement and go back inside.
