Li Cuihua chatted with the steamed bun shop owner for a couple more minutes before leaving with her grandson.
Wen Jiaojiao released her grip, secretly taking a breath and saying:
"You're mistaken, there's nothing there."
Wen Zhaoye breathed a sigh of relief. He was worried that a problem with his appearance might diminish Wen Jiaojiao's affection for him. He thought for a moment and said:
"Are you really a little crazy? Why do you always seem to enjoy doing this to me in public?"
"Yes, I might really have something wrong with me."
Wen Jiaojiao simply accepted it, since with this identity protecting her, all the unreasonable things she did could be explained away.
"Let's go! To the hospital!"
Wen Zhaoye didn't even bother to eat; he grabbed her hand and started to lead her out, his tone unusually firm.
Wen Jiaojiao's face turned pale with fright. She grabbed the corner of the table with one hand and struggled to pull herself back, saying:
"No, brother, this is just temporary. My brain was stimulated, and it will definitely get better gradually. Besides, it doesn't have any other effects."
Wen Zhaoye still somewhat enjoyed her closeness, and upon hearing this, he didn't think it was a big problem. He sat down again and said:
"If you feel unwell, tell me again, and I'll take you to the hospital for a full checkup."
The owner placed the beef soup and steamed buns on the table. Wen Jiaojiao picked up a bowl, slurped up the rice noodles, and inwardly wanted to cry but had no tears: "..."
They're really leaving people no way to survive.
After finishing his meal, Wen Zhaoye led her towards the farmers' market. He told Wen Jiaojiao to wait aside, and then walked up to a vegetable vendor and said:
Do you recognize the girl behind me?
When the vegetable vendor looked over, Wen Jiaojiao immediately made a face: "..."
I don't believe you can still recognize it.
The vegetable vendor abruptly looked away, waving his hands hastily and saying, "I dare not know you, I dare not know you."
Seeing his strong reaction, Wen Zhaoye turned around, puzzled.
Wen Jiaojiao's expression changed instantly, her eyes crinkling into a smile, as gentle as a spring breeze in March.
Sunlight fell on her face, making even the strands of her hair seem to move. A look of adoration flashed across Wen Zhaoye's eyes, and for a moment he forgot why he had come out at all.
He stepped forward with a pleased smile and asked, "Are you looking to buy something? Why are you smiling all of a sudden?"
Wen Jiaojiao's face stiffened slightly due to the rapid change in expression. She composed herself, rubbed her cheek, and said:
"It's nothing, I'm just in a good mood."
"All right."
After Wen Zhaoye finished speaking with a slight upturn of his eyebrows, he noticed the beads of sweat sticking to her forehead and pushed her into the shadows of the house. He then turned around and went to ask questions at other stalls.
When he and the vendor looked over at the same time, Wen Jiaojiao decisively lowered her head:
As long as I react quickly enough, the truth won't catch up with me.
Wen Zhaoye thought she was shy. His smile deepened, and his handsome face became dazzling. When he received the answer that the merchant still didn't recognize her, he didn't feel so bad.
He asked several more people in succession. When one vendor looked over, Wen Jiaojiao would use various expressions to scare them away, and when two vendors looked over at the same time, she would lower her head to avoid them.
A moment later, just as she felt her face was about to twitch, Wen Zhaoye, having calmed down, walked over and said:
"Let's go, it's too hot, let's go back to the hotel."
Wen Jiaojiao's heart relaxed slightly, and she smiled and said, "Okay, brother."
By the pond along the road, Li Cuihua and another woman walked ahead, each carrying a cloth bag full of vegetables.
Li Cuihua hurried home, saying, "You know, right? That Jiaojiao ran off with someone."
Another woman looked incredulous and said, "How could that be? I saw her yesterday afternoon. She's working at a nightclub now, supporting Xu Dajun and his son."
“I clearly saw her on the train the day before yesterday. There was a man with her at the time, and she even admitted that she wanted to have a serious talk. But I don’t know what happened, she ran away as soon as the train arrived at the station.”
"I really didn't know the day before yesterday, but I was definitely home yesterday. Since Jiaojiao started working at the nightclub these past two months, she's earned a lot of money, and our lives have been getting better and better."
It's a pity about Xiaofei. Although Jiaojiao takes her anger out on the children, at least he's usually well-groomed.
Now his dad stays home with him, drinks and then falls asleep immediately, letting him cry as much as he wants, and even poops on himself, and nobody cleans him up.
Li Cuiping felt a pang of tenderness in her heart as she listened: "Oh, it's such a pity about Xiaofei. But Jiaojiao, did you plan to run away the day before yesterday, and then I persuaded you to come back?"
"I really don't know, but it's best not to tell Xu Dajun about this, otherwise the couple will definitely fight again."
The two discussed it along the way, occasionally clicking their tongues in regret.
Wen Zhaoye led Wen Jiaojiao towards the hotel. As they turned a corner and reached the pond, they suddenly saw Li Cuihua's back.
His pupils contracted, fearing he would miss the opportunity again, and he hurriedly said, "Wait a minute."
Wen Jiaojiao's face suddenly darkened. Just as he was about to step forward, she jumped into the pond without hesitation, interrupting him, and said:
"It's so hot, I want to go for a swim."
With a loud "bang," a huge splash was created on the calm water surface.
Wen Zhaoye paused, thinking she was having another episode, and quickly plunged into the water, his voice full of worry:
"Jiaojiao, don't suddenly do something rash."
As he swam over, Wen Jiaojiao grabbed him and said, "Brother, let's sink down together and cool off."
Wen Zhaoye looked bewildered and hadn't even reacted when she pulled him completely into the water.
A chill ran through him, his handsome face was cold and aloof, his dark, tousled hair swaying with the movement of the water. After a moment's thought, his eyes suddenly sharpened as he looked at the girl opposite him, who was also holding her breath:
It seems there must be some big secret behind this, which is why they pull this stunt at times like this.
Wen Jiaojiao felt her scalp tingle under his gaze: She would have to figure out a way to cover it up later, or she could pretend to be mentally challenged, since that was something she was good at.
Most people on the roadside turned their attention to the pond. The woman walking ahead stopped and said to Li Cuihua:
"Cuihua, it looks like someone jumped into the water behind us. Let's go check it out."
Li Cuihua was some distance from the pond. She glanced back at the calm surface of the pond, then looked away and said:
"Forget it, my daughter-in-law has been in a bad mood lately. If I get back any later, she'll make a scene again."
"I'm not trying to be mean, but you're just spoiling your daughter-in-law. She'll drain you dry sooner or later and then throw you away."
Look at my daughter-in-law, she's different. She's about to give birth too, but she's doing all the housework. My son listens to me and lets her do as much as she wants.
The woman's face revealed a sharp edge. Li Cuihua knew her family situation and realized that they were completely incomparable. She chuckled and didn't continue the discussion.
