It was late at night.
The group was extremely vigilant. Three people were responsible for sleeping and resting, one person kept watch in the distance, and one person guarded the door of the wooden house.
Wen Jiaojiao couldn't find any chance to escape. Her mind was filled with fear, and she was not sleepy at all. She kept staring at the man at the door, trying to find an opening to escape as soon as he relaxed his guard.
After a while, the man walked out of the door.
Wen Jiaojiao got up in a panic. She walked cautiously to the door and happened to catch a glimpse of the man's back. He was standing against the wall, urinating.
With her hands tied behind her back, Wen Jiaojiao was unable to launch an attack and could only sneak away.
A minute later, the man put on his pants, tied the rope, and turned around. He caught a glimpse of Wen Jiaojiao's back and immediately sneered:
"Stop right now, or I'll do you right here."
The people inside had drunk quite a bit; upon hearing the noise, their minds were sluggish for a moment before they slowly opened their eyes.
The man chased after Wen Jiaojiao.
Wen Jiaojiao darted into the nearby woods and crouched down in the bushes to hide. She dared not breathe and watched helplessly as the man wandered around searching in front of her.
The man glanced around, saw no one, and roared angrily:
"You brat, come out here."
Wen Jiaojiao trembled. Seeing that the others were chasing after her, she knew that once the flashlight shone on her, she would have nowhere to hide.
Fortunately, the group only exchanged a few words before splitting up to begin their search.
Wen Jiaojiao dared not linger and continued walking forward.
Before long, all around was an endless sea, with shimmering waves rolling in and out, and on each side of the coast, a mountain blended into the moonlight.
Wen Jiaojiao dared not go back, because she knew that the other person was definitely guarding the intersection. In order not to leave any footprints, she could only run north along the direction where the waves were crashing.
A few minutes later, panting heavily, she looked back as she ran. A dark shadow was rapidly closing in on her. Her heart pounded, her breath catching in fear. She didn't dare stop and started running again.
Oh no, if I get caught, my legs will definitely be broken.
But just two minutes into her run, she suddenly felt a rough, large hand gripping her forearm.
Her scalp tingled, tears welled up in her eyes again, and she struggled frantically, saying:
"Please, please let me go."
Just then, the man behind her covered her mouth, then pulled her into his arms and whispered:
"Jiaojiao, it's me. Keep your voice down, they're coming."
Upon hearing the familiar voice, Wen Jiaojiao paused in her movements.
She turned around abruptly and saw the cool moonlight pouring down from the top of Wen Zhaoye's head. His handsome face was cold and solemn, but his eyes were gentle as he looked at her.
Her eyes welled up with tears again, and she buried her face in his chest, her voice trembling slightly as she said:
What brings you here?
Wen Zhaoye cautiously surveyed his surroundings. Seeing that the path ahead led to a rugged mountain, he reached out and gently touched the top of her head, softly coaxing her:
"Never mind that for now, I'll take you to hide."
Wen Jiaojiao nodded, and after Wen Zhaoye untied the rope from her hands, she followed him across the rocky area and closer to the mountain.
Wen Jiaojiao's nerves were stretched to the limit as she said:
"There's no road here. Did you knock that man unconscious and escape? Why don't we sneak back?"
Wen Zhaoye: "I knocked him down and ran over here. They must be looking for us now. There's only one way out, so there must be someone blocking the way. As long as we find a place to hide, Jiang Peitian will find us."
Wen Jiaojiao's delicate cheeks were sunken:
“Jiang Peitian is completely unreliable; he doesn’t care whether I live or die.”
Wen Zhaoye put one arm around her slender shoulder and comforted her gently:
"Don't worry, he'll come. Even if he doesn't, as long as we get through these few days, those people won't be able to find us and they'll leave anyway."
Wen Jiaojiao looked around in alarm. The dark rocks resembled ferocious beasts that would devour people, and she became increasingly uneasy.
“It’s all his fault. If it weren’t for him, I wouldn’t have ended up like this.”
Wen Zhaoye pulled her up the mountain along the rocks. Fortunately, the mountain was not too steep, and the two quickly climbed to the top. In front of them was a lush forest.
The two walked along the edge of the cliff, and the next second, they heard Zhou Qiang's fierce voice:
“I’ll stay here and keep watch. You guys keep searching along the beach. There’s only one road around here, they can’t escape.”
Wen Zhaoye subconsciously covered Wen Jiaojiao's lips and quietly retreated again, just in time to find a shallow and narrow cave.
Wen Jiaojiao plopped down on the ground, her beautiful eyes red and forlorn. Through the dappled shadows of the trees, she gazed at the distant sea where the water and sky met, and said:
"I'll just have to hide here for a few more days."
Wen Zhaoye sat down beside her, put his arm around her back, and used his other hand to examine the wound on her neck. Seeing that it was just a shallow cut, he was relieved and said:
"Don't worry, we'll definitely get out of here."
All the panic and fear she had felt since coming into this world were on the verge of erupting at this moment. Wen Jiaojiao felt an overwhelming sense of unease and could hardly express it:
"Why am I so unlucky? I ended up here out of nowhere, and now I'm stuck with your sister's identity and getting scolded all the time. I thought that once Jiang Peitian recognized me, my luck would finally change, but things are actually worse than before."
"See? There was clearly a better way, but you insisted on choosing the most difficult path. If you had just married me back then, wouldn't we be living happily in this small county town now?"
Mosquitoes swarmed among the grass and trees. Wen Jiaojiao scratched her neck, her fear lessening considerably since seeing him. She tearfully said:
