Hearing their conversation from inside the main room, Wen Zhaoye recalled Jiang Peitian's comment that Wen Jiaojiao had dated over thirty men, and he felt uneasy, saying:
"Jiaojiao, how do you know so much?"
Wen Jiaojiao opened the door, poked her little head out, and said with a grin:
"He figured it out from you. He's your brother, so you're probably in cahoots, no different from each other."
Wen Zhaoye had no objection to this statement; after all, he had always been mindful of his appearance when facing Wen Jiaojiao.
He chuckled softly, "There's a postpartum celebration in the village at noon, shall we go?"
Wen Jiaojiao thought for a moment and said:
“Great, that’s perfect, you can have Zhou Jinyan take Jiang Ci out to eat.”
Wen Zhaoye: "It's not really appropriate for someone to be on a blind date today."
Wen Jiaojiao: "When I went on my blind date, you and Zhou Jinyan were sitting at the next table. What's wrong with letting Jiang Ci sit at another table and eat by herself this time?"
"Okay, okay, I'll call right now." Wen Zhaoye said, taking out his phone and making the call.
On the other end of the phone, Zhou Jinyan was clenching his teeth from the cold, his eyelashes covered in frost. He stopped his motorcycle and answered, "What is it now?"
Wen Zhaoye bluntly stated:
“Our family is going out to a wedding banquet. We were thinking that we wouldn’t go if you were here, but now that you’re not here, Jiang Ci is the only one at home. Why don’t you take her to the county town for lunch?”
Zhou Jinyan's voice suddenly rose:
"If I were to take her to a blind date today, would you think that would be appropriate? This girl was introduced by my aunt. If I were to insult her like this, we wouldn't be able to stay as relatives anymore."
"Alright, let her suffer a meal at noon today, and we'll give her dinner when she gets back tonight."
Just as Wen Zhaoye finished speaking and was about to hang up, a hurried voice came from the other end:
"etc."
Wen Zhaoye's lips curled slightly, his handsome face roguish, and he suppressed the laughter in his voice as he said:
"What's wrong now?"
"I'll go back and pick you up now. You'd better tell me about this kind of thing earlier next time, so I don't have to make a trip."
After Zhou Jin finished speaking, she looked in the motorcycle's rearview mirror, tidied her hair which had been blown back by the wind, and then turned around and went back.
I rode very slowly this time, and my back was very straight, so I didn't look cold at all.
Jiang Ci stood at the door, watching him approach, and said with a humble expression:
"Don't worry, I'll go to a hotel as soon as I get to the county town. It won't delay your business."
Zhou Jin said ambiguously:
Aren't you going to eat?
Jiang Ci pulled her mink coat tighter around her waist and sat behind him, saying:
"There are quite a few restaurants there, so I won't go with you."
Zhou Jinyan didn't say much. After all, although he had feelings for her, he knew that they weren't suitable for each other.
If we can just hold off on seeing each other for a while, we can nip this budding romance in the bud.
Wen Zhaoye led Wen Jiaojiao to a house at the west end of the village.
The courtyard was bustling with people.
Someone saw the two and immediately greeted them:
"Zhaoye is here."
Wen Zhaoye nodded. Someone inside handed the two of them a long bench. Wen Jiaojiao sat on it and tilted her head, saying:
"How about we go in and check on the child?"
Wen Zhaoye had no interest in other people's children; he was only here today to share in the joy, since his own child would be born soon.
He gestured with his chin, saying, "It's inside the house. Go and see for yourself."
Wen Jiaojiao walked into the room, looked at the thin, small child on the bed, and chuckled softly:
"This baby is so cute."
Suddenly, the old woman sitting by the bed rolled her eyes and said:
"It's just a girl, and she doesn't even have a boyfriend, what's so cute about her?"
The woman lying in bed, recovering from childbirth, looked quite young. She asked, "Mom, why are you bringing this up?"
The man pouring the tea had a handsome face; he smiled and said:
"That's right, Mom. Yue'e can still have children. We can have another one in a few months. I guarantee she'll give you a grandson."
The smile on the woman's face froze as she entered postpartum confinement.
The old woman said with satisfaction:
"That's more like it. Your mother gave birth to seven daughters before you came along. You are our family's only son. Yue'e can't let the Wen family line end."
Wen Jiaojiao frowned slightly and looked up at the dilapidated and cracked wall:
Is there a royal heir in this family?
Li Yue'e's face turned pale as she said:
"Mom, I had a C-section. The doctor told me I can only have another baby after three years, otherwise it would be dangerous."
The woman kept talking:
"What's dangerous about it? Those doctors are just trying to fool you. With the national family planning policy, if your first child is a girl, you're allowed to have a second child."
You'd better hurry up and have the baby, otherwise if there's some reform and they don't allow two children anymore, and if our family has a baby secretly like them, our house will be demolished!
Looking at the old woman's face, Wen Jiaojiao felt there was a hint of malice about it.
However, this is their business, and it's a joyous occasion; it's really not appropriate for her to interfere.
She sat back down on the bench outside, not daring to utter a sound.
As if sensing her thoughts, Wen Zhaoye reached out and took her slender hand, whispering comfortingly:
"Don't overthink it. That's someone else, not me. Even if we have a girl, I'll still like her, and I certainly won't force you to keep having boys."
Wen Jiaojiao didn't have that thought, but she joked, "What if I give birth to a girl, and Jiang Peitian doesn't want to and forces me to have her?"
Wen Zhaoye said bluntly:
"Then I won't acknowledge him."
Wen Jiaojiao chuckled softly:
"You're such a good boy."
The old woman inside the house hadn't stopped her brainwashing incessantly:
"Next time, you'll have to give birth naturally. Don't believe everything the doctor says. I'm glad I didn't go this time, otherwise I would have cursed that doctor to death."
"A C-section costs so much money. Back in the day, childbirth was just a matter of a midwife cutting with scissors; it didn't cost nearly as much as it does now."
Li Yue'e's eyes filled with tears, and she complained softly:
"Then I won't be able to give birth. Am I supposed to suffer the pain until I die?"
The man couldn't sit still and said:
"Li Yue'e, how dare you talk to my mother like that? My mother has given birth to so many children, how could she not have experience?"
"If your mother hadn't been running around to different doctors, insisting on a C-section, you could have given birth naturally."
His voice was so loud that it startled the child, who burst into tears.
While gently patting the child, Li Yue'e wiped away her tears and said, "If my mother hadn't helped me pay that money, I would have died in the hospital. Don't you have any conscience?"
Before the man could say anything more, Wen Zhaoye suddenly spoke up: "Zhuzi, she just gave birth, stop arguing and comfort the baby."
Wen Jiaojiao's lips curled slightly:
Well done, that's my man for you.
