While the two were talking, Wen Jiaojiao carried the dark-colored Chinese medicine to the corner of the fence.
She was completely unaware of a deep gaze fixed on her, watching her fall at the base of the fence, and then kicking up the surrounding dry soil to cover the wet soil.
Wen Zhaoye didn't take it seriously, assuming she just didn't want to drink it because it was too bitter. He looked away and started rummaging through the bag for wheat.
Since her memory hasn't returned, it's obviously better for her to maintain this personality.
Wen Jiaojiao felt tired and buried the wet soil:
"To cover up one lie, you need countless lies."
Her voice was a low, almost silent sigh, but Wen Zhaoye knew for sure that he had heard her words clearly.
He paused, his handsome eyes narrowing slightly, his dark gaze fixed on the girl whose delicate face suddenly showed fear, and said in an ambiguous tone:
What did you just say?
Wen Jiaojiao felt flustered under his gaze. Her calves went weak, and she swallowed nervously, glancing away from his eyes as she said:
"It's nothing, brother. You should get back to work. It's getting late. Get some rest as soon as you're done."
The setting sun cast its glow on her beautiful face, giving her skin a rosy blush, making her seem to blend into the fiery clouds on the horizon.
Wen Zhaoye did not miss the tremor in her voice and the fleeting panic on her face.
His gaze darkened, his chest filled with a cloud of thoughts and doubts.
Wen Jiaojiao hurriedly dropped the bowl and went back to her room. She took a shower, then lay sprawled on the bed in a spaghetti-strap nightgown and super-short pajama bottoms.
Her long, dark hair, reaching her waist, was spread across the bed. Her small face was bright and delicate, and her gaze was fixed intently on a mosquito that kept trying to squeeze through a crack in the mosquito net.
Whether he was talking about the mosquitoes or admonishing himself, he muttered to himself, "Why come in blindly just for a bite to eat? You might end up losing your life. What's the point?"
Sweat clung to Wen Zhaoye's bangs, and his face was dirty and dusty, giving his handsome features a slightly roguish and arrogant air.
He crossed his arms, leaned against the doorframe, and stared at her with deep, dark eyes, saying lazily:
"Aren't you going to explain? Hmm?"
Wen Jiaojiao snapped back to her senses, turned her head, and met his dark, handsome eyes through the mosquito net. Her heart pounded wildly in fright, and she said breathlessly:
"There's not much to say. I just feel like things might not be going well at home right now, so I want to go out and try my luck. I'll send you the money I owe you back when I do."
"Is that so?" Wen Zhaoye's thin, crimson lips curved into a slight smile, his tone casual as he spoke:
"Then let's go out once your mind is completely clear. I'll watch you drink the Chinese medicine from now on until you remember everything."
Wen Jiaojiao's face stiffened: "..."
How could I possibly remember that?
The air fell silent for a moment, and even the buzzing of mosquitoes flapping their wings was clearly audible.
Just then, a shout came from outside the door:
"Jiaojiao, the incense ash water the fortune teller mentioned, Mom has made it for you and it's cooling on the table. Remember to drink it later."
A clear smile appeared in Wen Zhaoye's eyes:
Do you want me to serve it to you?
Wen Jiaojiao's voice choked with emotion as she glared at him:
"Stop bothering me. If you actually bring it over, I'll smash your bowl. You can try it if you don't believe me. Anyone with a little scientific knowledge knows that stuff isn't for drinking."
Wen Zhaoye showed no sign of annoyance:
"It's okay, I'll pinch your cheeks and force-feed you, I promise not a drop will be left."
His voice was as casual and gentle as if he were talking about the weather, but the words he uttered made Wen Jiaojiao's brain throb with anger.
She complained through gritted teeth:
What grudge could you possibly hold against me that you'd treat me like this?
Wen Zhaoye showed no intention of letting him go:
"It's a very big deal."
Wen Jiaojiao ground her back teeth, then sighed helplessly, lowered her eyelashes, and feigned sincerity as she explained:
"Selective amnesia is real, but I didn't lose my memory after falling in the back mountain. Instead, I forgot a lot of things before I came back."
Wen Zhaoye's expression was solemn, revealing neither a trace of trust nor distrust:
"So what's the reason you came back this time and why you're in the back mountain? And how did you lose your memory?"
Wen Jiaojiao, displaying her talent for making things up, said:
"At the time, all I remembered was that Xu Dajun stole something, the person came looking for him, he ran away, and I got a beating. After I woke up, I forgot a lot about how good I was with Xu Dajun."
Then, looking at him again, he seemed completely out of place, and I realized I was blind. Without hesitation, I ran back.
It was early morning when I arrived at the village entrance. Afraid of being seen and scolded, I ran around to the back of the mountain.
As a result, I hadn't been back for several years, and I wasn't familiar with the roads anymore. I tripped and fell several times, and now my mind is even more confused.
The villagers mock me every day. Today I was thinking if I said I fell in the back mountain and lost my memory, maybe they would forgive my past mistakes. But it turns out things are still just as bad.
Wen Zhaoye lowered his eyes and pondered for a moment. When he looked up at her again, his eyes were full of determination, as if he would respond immediately once he received an answer. He then asked:
Do you have children with him?
You can't get along with your child, can you?
Wen Jiaojiao pursed her lips, sat up, lowered her head, and let her long hair cover both sides of her face, concealing all her emotions, and said:
"I really don't know. People say I have amnesia, how can I remember everything? You can't question the doctor's medical skills at the clinic."
Wen Zhaoye's mood has improved considerably:
"Then I'll take you to the county hospital tomorrow for a check-up, and also get your head checked again."
"I won't investigate." If they find out she's virgin, Xu Cuifen will fight me to the death. Wen Jiaojiao's heart pounded, she bit her lower lip and protested with her eyes downcast.
Wen Zhaoye's heart, which had just relaxed, tightened again, fearing that she would reveal something even more unacceptable. He said in a clear and cold voice:
"Why?"
"If it turns out I have a child, I will definitely miss that child so much that I can't eat or sleep. But I don't want to go back to the way I used to live. I will be in a dilemma."
Wen Jiaojiao turned her delicate and beautiful face away, her lovely eyes red and brimming with tears as she gazed at him. Her expression was filled with unspeakable grievances, and she sobbed softly:
"And regarding memories, do you want me to remember everything and go back to how I was before?"
Wen Zhaoye's budding love was growing uncontrollably; he couldn't bear to see her cry. His usually calm eyes, like the soft glow of moonlight, flickered with a moment of panic, and he quickly softened his voice to coax her:
"Okay, okay, I won't ask anymore. I'm going to boil some water to take a bath."
Wen Jiaojiao watched him hurry away, making sure to take the incense ash water with him, and secretly breathed a sigh of relief.
Sure enough, a woman's tears have a powerful effect on any man. If he ever provokes me again, I'll just cry every time.
Although Wen Zhaoye was still full of doubts, he did not consider the possibility that it was not the same person at all.
After all, Wen Jiaojiao is extremely beautiful, and if she just wanted to make a living, she wouldn't have to take on such a troublesome identity.
