Chapter 6 Dividing the Family

Now it was Wang Xiuqin's turn to be dumbfounded.

She just wanted to pass on her work to Lu Wanqing, so why is she talking about separating the family?

She knew perfectly well that although Lin Ye had a mentally ill mother, Zhao Xiaolan received a subsidy of two yuan a month from the brigade!

Lin Ye works quickly and efficiently, earning ten work points each time, and he also helps Gou Dan earn ten work points.

The work points he earned were more than enough to support the two of them.

Moreover, he would occasionally go hunting in the mountains, bringing back pheasants and rabbits to improve their meals; their family's food was not bad compared to other brigades.

At the end of the year, the team will tally up the work points, and the family can still receive more than 100 yuan!

Of course, because of Zhao Xiaolan's parents' bad class background, her family was also implicated, and the place they lived was not as good as other people's.

The riverbank is damp and has many mosquitoes, and there's also the risk of flooding during the rainy season, so it's only right that he makes extra sacrifices for his family.

Now, however, he wants to separate the family!

There's no such thing as a free lunch!

"We can't split up! It's just a meal, why is it escalating to the point of dividing the family property!" Lin Jianguo tapped his pipe impatiently, his brows furrowed so deeply they could trap a mosquito.

"That's right, what nonsense are you talking about? I was a bit too impulsive just now. I'll fry you another egg now!" Wang Xiuqin took the opportunity to curry favor.

Lin Ye clenched his fists, his spittle leaving a deep dent, and insisted on separating the family.

How could he possibly agree to let his wife do chores and be manipulated?

When Lu Wanqing saw Lin Ye showing off his muscles, she felt a sweet warmth in her heart. Her man was amazing; he didn't need any persuasion and had already figured out what to do.

In fact, she didn't dare tell Lin Ye that Wang Xiuqin's so-called daily care for Zhao Xiaolan actually involved making her do laundry and sweep the floor. If she refused, she would pinch her with her hands, always in hidden places, so Lin Ye wouldn't notice.

Moreover, Zhao Xiaolan's fall into the water was also due to Wang Xiuqin's negligence in taking care of her. She was busy chatting and joking with others, and by the time she remembered her, Zhao Xiaolan had already fallen into the water and died.

Lu Wanqing decided not to tell Lin Ye about these things, fearing that he might kill Wang Xiuqin in a moment of impulse, and then things would get out of control.

At this moment, Elaine Chao was still a vibrant person, and that was enough.

Seeing that Lin Ye was determined to separate the family, Wang Xiuqin began to put on a show of crying, making a scene, and threatening suicide.

Lin Gou Dan returned home from a stroll and saw her rolling on the ground. He sneered:

"Mom, what are you up to now?"

She resorts to this tactic whenever she gets no response or no one listens to her.

He used to be quite effective; Lin Jianguo and Lin Gou Dan would immediately raise their hands in surrender.

Now, they're annoyed too. People value themselves too much, so they won't really hurt themselves.

Lin Ye watched coldly, continued to cook over a fire, and soon cracked two eggs, scrambled them into a plate, and then added white rice to the scrambled eggs.

Normally, I'm reluctant to use oil, but this fried rice has a rich aroma of lard, so I must have used a lot of it.

Lin Gou Dan was so hungry that his saliva was dripping. He tried to pick up a piece with his hand and eat it, but Lin Ye chased him away with his scalding hot spatula.

Looking at the plate of golden eggs, Wang Xiuqin felt heartbroken and cried even louder as she lay on the ground.

Lu Wanqing sighed, ignoring her completely.

Lin Ye gave her all the fried rice with eggs, while he ate the leftover pickled vegetables and vegetable pancakes.

Lu Wanqing ate with great relish, looking very satisfied, praising his cooking as she ate, which made him blush.

"If you like it, I'll make it for you every day from now on!" Lin Ye said affectionately.

Snowball also got a little bit of vegetable pancakes, but it didn't care to eat them; it had already eaten its fill of the dog food the two of them had scattered.

Lu Wanqing ate half of her food, then put down her chopsticks and pushed the bowl towards Lin Ye, saying, "I'm full, you can eat the rest!"

Lin Ye: "..."

He had seen this scene many times before: Wang Xiuqin would push the food she couldn't finish onto Lin Jianguo.

Lin Jianguo would often frown slightly and say, insincerely, "I won't eat your leftovers."

Wang Xiuqin would scoff and reply, "We're an old married couple, what can't we eat? Stop being so dramatic!"

Does Lu Wanqing giving him leftovers mean she considers him an ordinary couple?

Seeing that she was really full, Lin Ye happily ate her leftovers.

He felt that today's fried rice was the most delicious meal he had eaten in twenty years.

This was the first time Lin Xiaocui had ever seen her cousin's face so relaxed and carefree. She couldn't help but chuckle to herself, thinking that this rough man was about to be tamed by a beautiful woman!

However, it was really a headache to see her mother crying and wailing like this.

She didn't want to say too much, afraid that if she said too much, her mother would bring up the matter of her dropping out of school again. After finishing this semester, she would only have one year left in high school and would need to get her diploma to have more options.

She didn't want to spend her whole life in the countryside.

After having a full meal, Lin Ye washed the dishes and prepared to take his mother and Lu Wanqing back to the house.

Anyway, he has made up his mind that he will go to the Party Secretary and the Brigade Leader tomorrow to settle the matter of dividing the family property.

Just as they stepped out of the house, Party Secretary Yu Guanghui and Brigade Leader Zhou Changsheng walked into the courtyard, waving flashlights.

They came to confront Lu Wanqing after hearing that she had returned.

Although Lu Wanqing has returned, she will be punished for going out without a letter of introduction from the brigade.

In the past, some educated youth couldn't stand the hardship of farming and ran away. After being caught, they were sent to the even more arduous road maintenance team on the farm. They were exposed to the sun and rain every day and died after half a year of this torment.

Upon seeing Yu Guanghui and Zhou Changsheng, Wang Xiuqin's eyes lit up as if she had seen saviors. She quickly moved chairs and served tea, even adding the last handful of sesame seeds she had to the tea, afraid that she hadn't done her job properly.

Yu Guanghui and Zhou Changsheng always appreciated such flattery, sitting down to drink tea and acting like leaders.

Lin Ye and Lu Wanqing stood aside like primary school students, waiting for them to speak.

“Just say I’m going home to visit relatives!” Lu Wanqing tiptoed and whispered in Lin Ye’s ear.

They barely spoke along the way, and didn't even have time to exchange their statements.

Lin Ye felt a tingling sensation in his ears, as if an electric current was passing through him.

His wife was so thoughtful; he couldn't bear to see her suffer any punishment.

While drinking tea, Wang Xiuqin had already rambled on about the division of the Lin family property, explaining most of it.

Of course, she only said what was in her favor, making Lin Ye sound utterly worthless.

Zhou Changsheng put down his teacup, patted off imaginary dust from his clothes, and said slowly, "We'll talk about the family division later. Let's deal with Lu Zhiqing's escape first!"

Zhou Changsheng was in his forties, in the prime of his life, and spoke with a strong voice and intonation.

Wang Xiuqin thought to herself that Lu Wanqing was going to be sent to the farm, so she was overthinking the family division.

Lin Ye and Lu Wanqing said in unison:

"I'm going home to visit my family!"

"My wife is visiting her family!"

The educated youth had the right to go home to visit their families, and no one can deny that.

"Do you have a letter of introduction from the brigade?" The old Party Secretary took a sip of tea, a half-smile on his face.

Looks like they're after her!
