Chapter 480: Tempting to Change Route
480
On their way back, Tang Shengkai and his companions had already prepared themselves for Blake's harassment. They had originally come to take over the mission of escorting Commander Han. However, they were ambushed before they even reached the meeting point.
Afterwards, the American troops were beaten and scattered. Blake was a coward to begin with, and their team was already at the back. He didn't even have the desire to fight. When he saw other American soldiers fleeing, he immediately led his team to retreat.
Now that they were safe and resting here, Blake had recovered and was looking for trouble again. Chang Yin really wanted to kill him directly.
However, keeping him here was still useful. They hadn't completed their mission, so they had two options: either return directly to their previous camp, or go to Base 5 to seek support.
This place was about 150 miles from Base 5. Their previous camp was over 200 miles away. Now, if they wanted to go to Base 5, they needed Blake's permission.
After Tang Shengkai finished speaking, Blake didn't lower his gun. He motioned for the two soldiers behind him to come forward and search. The soldiers roughly searched through the backpacks and pockets of several people, and every movement was full of distrust.
Chang Yin, Tang Shengkai, and the others remained calm on the surface, but deep down they were extremely dissatisfied with the American soldiers. After searching for a long time, the American soldiers did not find anything suspicious on Chang Yin and the others except for guns, ammunition, and their simple daily necessities.
The atmosphere suddenly became awkward. Just when Blake didn't know how to get off the stairs, Fei Shuwen suddenly clutched his stomach and bent over in pain:
"Captain... my stomach hurts so much, maybe I ate something bad. I've been holding it in since a while ago, but I can't hold it in any longer..."
His behavior actually eased the tense atmosphere a little.
Blake frowned, a look of disgust on his face. "What a hassle! Solve it quickly, don't delay your trip!" He waved his hand, temporarily putting aside his suspicion of the men. However, his dislike for them would not change.
Fei Shuwen came back slowly, and the others exchanged glances. Chang Yin crouched down, and while handing Fei Shuwen the kettle, he caught a glimpse of Blake picking his nails with a dagger, his eyes occasionally glancing over.
He secretly calculated in his heart that although this "old fox" was as timid as a mouse, he was very cunning. If he wanted to make him choose to go to Base No. 5, he would have to work hard.
"Captain Black," Chang Yin straightened up, a look of just the right amount of worry on his face, "What do you think we should do next? Should we go back to the original camp? We've probably walked 200 miles.
Besides, I should pass by the goddess’ camp on the way back. What if I run into her again?”
He paused deliberately, his gaze fixed on the gloomy woods in the distance, where the smoke from the battle still lingered.
Blake snorted coldly and spun the dagger in his palm. "Ha! What? Jon, are you scared? Oh, no, no, no! Didn't you swear solemnly when you accepted the mission? Please don't let me underestimate you. A yellow man loyal to the US military!"
Chang Yin cursed inwardly, but forced a wry smile on his face. "Captain, I'm thinking about the whole team. You've seen how elusive the Goddess's men are. If our team encounters them again, we'll be in great danger. I think my concerns are justified."
According to the map, we should be closer to Base 5. There are sufficient weapons and equipment and support there, and we might even be able to avenge our previous defeat!
"Revenge our previous humiliation?" Blake scoffed, a hint of hesitation flashing in his eyes. "Do you think Base 5 is your backyard? You can just go there on a whim? If we get ambushed along the way, who's responsible?"
Chang Yin had expected him to say this, so he took out a crumpled map from his pocket and spread it on the ground: "Captain, look, this is something I picked up by chance on the way of retreat.
"It's marked with a hidden path that bypasses the Goddess's main sphere of influence. Furthermore, Base 5 is only 150 miles away, much closer than returning to our original camp. As long as we're careful and cautious, I believe, under Captain Black's leadership, we'll arrive safely."
Blake leaned over and stared at the winding lines on the map, a hint of doubt in his eyes. "Is it that simple? How could such an important map be found by you?"
"Haha, so, Captain Black...does this count as my good luck?" Chang Yin pretended to be sarcastic.
"I was dodging bullets in the bushes when I suddenly found the map pressed under a rock. The rock was too hard, so I pulled it over and used it as a cushion for my knees. I have a habit of collecting things, so I took it with me when I left.
I opened it when I had some free time, and I didn’t expect it to be such an important thing.”
Chang Yin spoke confidently, not even hinting at a lie. In reality, this map was forged by Tang Shengkai. The paths on it seemed hidden, but they were actually a carefully designed trap. Once Blake and his team were halfway there, the Goddess's men would be able to surround them.
But before giving it to Blake, Chang Yin made some modifications to it. He felt that doing so was too risky because without American faces, it would be extremely difficult for a few yellow people like them to enter the US military's No. 5 base from the front.
"Humph, I don't think it's that simple. Jon, I don't believe you at all." Blake stood up and paced back and forth.
"Jon, you're not going to drag us into trouble just because of this little friction we had, are you? I heard Base 5 is conducting some secret experiments recently and the security is very tight. If we go there rashly, what if we're mistaken for suspicious persons and we don't even have a chance to explain ourselves!
Oh no, God, I haven't lived enough, I really don't want to take part in something so horrible."
Chang Yin's heart skipped a beat; he hadn't expected Blake to know the secrets of Base 5. But he quickly composed himself, lowering his voice in a mysterious tone, "Captain, you don't know something. I have a brother at Base 5, and he secretly told me that the base is short on manpower lately."
As long as we can get there safely, we will not only receive support, but we might even be able to make a great contribution. A promotion and a raise will be just around the corner!"
Blake really stopped, a trace of greed flashed in his eyes: "Jon, are you sure what you said is true? Don't lie to me!"
"Captain, I never lie. Besides, there's no need for me to lie to you. Besides, you should know better than me that even if we go to Base 5, our advantage won't be great. I'm doing all this for you."
Chang Yin said seriously, "Captain, if you still don't believe me, wait until we get to Base 5 and meet my brother, and everything will become clear."
He paused, looked around, and then added, "However, this matter must be kept secret. If others find out, our credit will be taken away."
Blake pondered for a moment, his face changing from gloomy to cheerful. He was worried about the danger of going to Base 5, but he didn't want to miss this opportunity to make a contribution.
At this moment, a gunshot suddenly rang out in the distance, startling a flock of crows in the woods. Chang Yin was delighted, thinking this was an "accident" they had arranged to put pressure on Blake.
"Captain, listen!" Chang Yin's face changed. "The gunshots are not far from us. The Goddess's men may have already caught up with us! We must make a decision quickly. If we delay any longer, it will be too late!"
Blake's expression instantly turned grim. He gripped his gun tightly and looked around, as if he could see the enemy at any moment. Finally, he gritted his teeth and said, "Okay! Let's go to Base 5! But if anything goes wrong, I think, Jon, you'd be a good scapegoat!"
Chang Yin secretly breathed a sigh of relief, but on the surface he remained respectful: "Yes! I will follow the captain's orders!"
The gunshot immediately broke the silence of Blake's team. Blake quickly gathered everyone and set off immediately.
The American troops here were not only from Blake's team, but also from the team that should have separated from Chang Yin's team at the junction. The reason why Blake was so confident in going to Base No. 5 was because their team now had nearly 200 people.
With so many people, it's a considerable fighting force.
"Hey, Jon, take out that map of yours and have a look at it."
