Chapter 484: Reckless Advance
484
Fei Shuwen held his breath in the locker until the footsteps of the two American officers completely disappeared at the end of the corridor, then he carefully pushed open the locker door.
He tiptoed to the table, his eyes fixed on the document labeled "Subsea Engineering." He quickly picked it up and flipped through it. The few words he pieced together made his heart beat like a drum—words like "energy" and "weapons" appeared repeatedly in the document.
Considering the exceptionally tight security of Base 5, he realized that this was not only hiding a shocking secret capable of changing the course of the war, but he also saw the word "CHINA" mentioned several times in the documents. It seemed likely that these plans were related to China.
"I have to take this document away!" Fei Shuwen gritted his teeth and made a decision. Just as he reached out to take it, he suddenly heard hurried footsteps coming from the corridor. His blood instantly froze, and he hid in the locker again as if conditioned.
The footsteps paused briefly at the door. Fei Shuwen clenched his fists, his nails digging into his palms, and cold sweat streamed down his back. Fortunately, the footsteps soon faded away. He breathed a sigh of relief, but didn't dare to delay any longer and quickly stuffed the documents into his arms.
Just as he was about to leave, he caught a glimpse of a card peeked out from under the table. In the dim light, he saw the silver U.S. Army insignia printed on the edge of the card, and a thought struck him: "Could this be the identification card for entering the control center?"
This discovery made his breathing quicken. However, at this moment, from time to time, he could hear the voices and footsteps of soldiers talking outside the lounge door, and each sound was like a heavy hammer hitting his nerves.
Fei Shuwen paced back and forth in the lounge, his mind agonizing. If he took the card, he might gain access to the core area, but if he were discovered, not only would his life be in danger, but Chang Yin and Tang Shengkai would also be implicated. If he didn't take it, he worried about missing out on this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
In the end, the sense of responsibility for the mission prevailed. This might be the only time I could get this pass so easily.
Fei Shuwen took a deep breath, squatted down, and carefully reached for the card. Just as his fingertips were about to touch the card, a loud shout suddenly came from outside the door: "Hey! Dyson, where are you going?" Fei Shuwen's heart suddenly jumped to his throat, and the blood in his body seemed to stop flowing.
He acted decisively, pulled out the card, quickly hid back in the locker, and gently closed the door.
The footsteps were getting closer and closer, and the door was suddenly pushed open. Fei Shuwen curled up in the small locker, not daring to breathe, listening to the two people's conversation, Fei Shuwen held his breath and concentrated.
"Blake, I don't think I know you well. I don't like strangers coming to my private property. Please leave."
Blake followed Dyson into the lounge. "Oh, Dyson, I think you've forgotten how we once fought side by side."
Dyson shook his head helplessly. He had work to do now and didn't have time to argue with Dyson. He turned his eyes to the table and frowned. He turned and looked at Blake suspiciously.
"Blake, I think you should have been in my room before I came back, right?" Dyson stared at him as he spoke, trying to see something in his eyes. Moreover, his hands hanging by his side were clenched into fists, secretly gathering strength.
Blake was forced to retreat repeatedly by Dyson. He spread his hands and shrugged. "Dyson, even if you don't want to see me, there's no need to accuse me like this. I just came here, and the members of my team can testify for me.
I just came here today, and I've been asking around in your lounge for a long time. There's nothing to hide. Oh, and there are so many people outside, you can go out and ask them."
Dyson didn't quite trust Blake, but he also didn't think he would do something like stealing the documents. It wouldn't do him any good. "But on the way back just now, Robert and Michael clearly said they had already delivered the documents to me."
Blake frowned. "Dyson, are you doubting me? I don't think you need to. I don't know anything about this base. I wouldn't do such a thing. Should I take it and then come back to talk to you?"
Dyson thought what Blake said made sense. This also reminded Blake, and he immediately went out with a sullen face. He wanted to ask Michael and the others how long it had taken for the documents to be delivered.
Blake didn't want to be wronged again, so he didn't stay alone in Dyson's lounge and followed him out. Fei Shuwen breathed a sigh of relief, and at the same time, he understood most of the conversation between the two.
Seeing the two of them leave, he quickly came out of the cabinet and hurried out of the lounge. Standing at the door of the lounge, he could still see Dyson and Blake disappearing around the corner.
Fei Shuwen was coming from that direction, and if he went in that direction now, he would probably bump into Blake and Dyson. This was not a wise move.
After all, Blake dislikes them and his first reaction would be to suspect him.
But there was no way out of the other end of this corridor. But it led to the main control center. Fei Shuwen felt the documents on his chest. This time he had no choice but to give it a try.
Dyson had already discovered that the documents were missing, and he had no chance to find a place to make copies. And soon Dyson might find that his identification card for the control center was missing, and then he would not even have the chance to enter the control center.
Fei Shuwen had already made preparations. There might be no return. But this opportunity was rare, and he had to seize it. Fei Shuwen decisively walked towards the control center.
He can't bring this document in. If he's caught...
Fei Shuwen walked, observing his surroundings. Finally, he found an open door at the end of the corridor. He quickly entered and tucked the documents under a floor-to-ceiling cabinet. Lifting the cabinet made him sweat. Then, Fei Shuwen quickly ran to the control center.
The main control center door was right before his eyes. Fei Shuwen took a deep breath and tremblingly placed the identification card close to the sensing area. With a click, the door slowly opened, and a cold gust of air hit him.
What comes into view is a long corridor with closed metal doors on both sides. Each door is marked with a different number and English abbreviation, representing a different functional area.
Fei Shuwen stood at the door, scanning the unfamiliar space vigilantly. The humming sounds of running machines and the prompt sounds of electronic equipment intertwined and echoed in the corridor.
He had no idea which door led to the core area, nor did he know the specific function of each room. The sweat on his palms almost soaked the identification card.
But he couldn't stand in the corridor for too long because there was no one in the corridor. After hesitating for a moment, he walked towards a door in the middle of the corridor and put the identification card close to the sensing area.
With a "ding" sound, the door opened. Fei Shuwen took a deep breath and slipped in.
Inside the room, several American military technicians were staring intently at the screens before them, tapping away at their keyboards as various data rapidly scrolled across them. One of the officers, wearing glasses, heard the noise and turned around, his eyes filled with confusion. "Who are you? Why are you here?"
Fei Shuwen pretended to be calm, trying to make his voice sound steady. "Hello, sir. I was assigned here to organize the information. The sir asked me to familiarize myself with the environment first."
"Data collation?" The officer frowned, stood up, and approached Fei Shuwen step by step. "The data collation area is in Room B-07. You don't even know this?"
Fei Shuwen's brain was working rapidly, thinking about how to deal with the situation: "Sorry, sir, I just arrived and am not familiar with the layout here. I accidentally took the wrong way." As he spoke, he saluted, his face showing no nervousness, as if this was really the case.
Fei Shuwen didn't expect that information really needed to be sorted out here. It would be great if he could really get in.
The officer looked him up and down, his eyes becoming increasingly sharp. "New here? Why wasn't I notified? Show me your ID!"
Fei Shuwen thought to himself, "Oh no! I don't have any ID." His throat tightened. "It's in my locker. I'll get it." Fei Shuwen remained relaxed, not nervous at all. But the officer still wouldn't give in.
As Fei Shuwen turned and walked towards the door, he suddenly shouted, "Stop!" A cold gleam flashed in the officer's eyes, and he continued, "You're not from here at all! Come, arrest him!"
As soon as he finished speaking, several American soldiers in the room drew their guns and quickly surrounded him.
